Graduate school's course-in-a-book is a great start!

QUICK SUMMARY: Despite the title, this book will acquaint you with agile project management, but the only way to master agile project management is by leading projects using agile methodologies. To that end, this book succeeds in providing a great overview of agile methodologies that any project manager ought to know.

BACKGROUND: I hold both the Project Management Professional credential and a master's degree in project management from George Washington University. I've worked as a professional project manager for over ten years in an industry (IT) that I've worked in for 30 years. For nearly all of that time, I've worked on traditional, so-called "waterfall" projects, and continue to do so. Only now am I getting an opportunity to employ agile methodologies. This book is helpful to me in learning what those methodologies are, how to put them to use.

WHAT I LIKE:

- This book is written for graduate-level academics. It even comes with a full semester's course outline in Appendix D!
- Starts off with a history of agile project management, including covering the Agile Manifesto and agile in the 1970s and 80s
- Provides good explanation of agile terms and concepts like product backlog, user stories and epics, Kanban boards, planning poker, etc
- The author chose to use VersionOne to represent an enterprise-wide agile project management tool (VersionOne makes a great tool)
- Chapter 12 provides essential information for scaling agile at the enterprise level, which is not easy to do
- Chapter 13 provides essential information for adopting agile in a specific business environment, dealing with cultural issues
- The book ends with case studies which show how agile PM was implemented in real-world environments
- Overall, the book presumes little by way of reader knowledge of agile PM (which, if you're already familiar with agile to some extent, may mean some of the earlier chapters may not be of much value to you)

WHAT COULD BE BETTER:

- This is a black-and-white book, with no color outside of the book's cover. The book would have been more engaging with full-color printing, especially since it does make some limited use of graphics to help the reader.
- The graphics, when used, are sometimes too small to be easily read
- The book title is hype; you won't master agile project management after reading it. You will, however, have a basis of knowledge to begin undertaking a pursuit towards agile mastery, but even then, there are other materials you ought to read in addition to this book (there is an appendix of recommended reading that has good, other resources to consider.

CONCLUSION: This is a great book to begin a journey into agile project management. It is easy to understand and covers a lot of ground without going deeply into any one area. If you are just beginning to acquire agile project management skills, or you have an interest in agile project management (academically and/or professionally), this is a fine book to add to your personal library. Recommended!

Does what is intended...I like it.

Having worked for a software company where we changed from waterfall to Agile methodologies, it was a long difficult road for many to make the change. Back in the day we needed a way to help us understand how to bridge this change; but we didn't have many books like this back then.

Most chapters compare traditional project management to how agile changes these steps.
In addition, there is some discussion on the pros and cons between waterfall versus agile, which I interpreted as one isn't necessarily better than the other. Rather, based on the pros and cons you may find waterfall fits the project better than agile and visa versa.

For the SCUM process, the book provides a high-level overview chapter, which is helpful to those completely unfamiliar with these process.

I work in a 40,000 employee company and we have a lot of employees with the role, title and/or certification of project manager. Yet, most can't get the job done and get hung up with all the documentation and task tracking responsibilities in place of actually driving a project to completion. What I like about this bridging between waterfall and agile, is the author is clear how documentation is less important and how a person should/could facilitate more (drive/lead the project less) in order to get the project complete.

I also really liked the case studies. Not just the typical "successful" case studies, but there is a chapter on the not so successful.

OVERALL: If you are looking to better understand Agile and already have some project management experience, this is a good book that covers a lot of areas and ties your experiences together. If you are not familiar with Agile, you could just get a book on Agile and jump with both feet in. This is what I did and now I'm a PSM/CSM (certified scrum master).

But this is the first book I've found that helps take familiar waterfall methods and quantify what changes you need to make to start your transition, or your team's transition to Agile. . .if/when Agile makes more sense for your businessl.

About the Author

Michael Sullivan, Emeritus Professor of Mathematics at Chicago State University, received a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Illinois Institute of Technology. Mike taught at Chicago State for 35 years before recently retiring. He is a native of Chicago’s South Side and divides his time between a home in Oak Lawn IL and a condo in Naples FL.

 

Mike is a member of the American Mathematical Society and the Mathematical Association of America. He is a past president of the Text and Academic Authors Association and is currently Treasurer of its Foundation. He is a member of the TAA Council of Fellows and was awarded the TAA Mike Keedy award in 1997 and the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. In addition, he represents TAA on the Authors Coalition of America.

 

Mike has been writing textbooks for more than 35 years and currently has 15 books in print, twelve with Pearson Education. When not writing, he enjoys tennis, golf, gardening, and travel.

 

Mike has four children: Kathleen, who teaches college mathematics; Michael III, who also teaches college mathematics, and who is his coauthor on two precalculus series; Dan, who is a sales director for Pearson Education; and Colleen, who teaches middle-school and secondary school mathematics. Twelve grandchildren round out the family.

 

Mike Sullivan III is a professor of mathematics at Joliet Junior College. He holds graduate degrees from DePaul University in both mathematics and economics. Mike is an author or co-author on more than 20 books, including a statistics book and a developmental mathematics series. Mike is the father of three children and an avid golfer who tries to spend as much of his limited free time as possible on the golf course.

NEW looseleaf copy DOES have math lab access !!!!

Great price, much less than the student bookstore ... HOWEVER, my copy DID come with the math lab access !! After reading all the reviews, i also ordered a math lab access, since so many people said that it did not come with one. I ordered a NEW copy of the looseleaf book, perhaps that is why I got the mathlab access ... but if you do need the mathlab, then it is worth ordering the new copy .. because it does come with it !!!

Stick with Thinkwell instead

This book is not put together very well. The equations skip key steps and unless you have a detailed math background, you will scratch your head trying to figure out the missing parts. It is also riddled with errors. For example, in 9.4, you need to take the inverse function to determine the angle of a vector. There is no mention of any inverse in the chapter.

My weakest point was precalc this last semester. The book arrived to me in good condition, although it took some time to arrive. The book was in decent condition. There was some writing and a little underlining in pencil, along with wrong answers. This book helped me pass the class. Everything you need to know is in there. I like how this book highlights the new information it is giving you, along with recaps at the end of the chapters.

Buying the book for me was the option as I used it until the last day of class, as well as underlined in pencil some of the things I needed.

Would reccomend this book to anyone who needs to take precalculus

~ Great Book! Many interesting & practically applicable games, concepts, theorems, & formulas. Just needs a Robotics Laws update, it only shows 3, when now there are now more laws, look it up in Wikipedia: Laws of Robotics. Be aware the latest publication copyright of this book is 1985 & has only been updated slightly as it mentions in description.

Great casual read for the mathematician

Writing from a graduate student in pure mathematics point of view. Moreover, I am most interested in analysis with quite a bit interest in computability theory, logic, and finite state machine type stuff.

This book is a pretty casual read and is probably not for anyone wanting to ready themselves for AI research (as others have said). However, it is a really interested casual read that (thankfully) does get pretty mathematical. I find the exposition on the heavier math sides to be quite interesting. And, even though the book is definitely outdated, I would assume a lot of the theoretical ideas about AI still hold true for today. Regardless of whether or not uses statistics for AI now, there are a lot of really good ideas in this book I would assume are still important.

In short, I would probably recommend this book to anyone interested in ideas rather than applications in terms of AI. If you are a master at computability type stuff, this book's math exposition might be a little light, but the historical aspects and point of views written in this book probably make it worth it.

With each reading, there is something that I had not noticed before, which makes this a classic introduction.

A great introduction to Turing Machines and basics to other computational theories. Other books, speaking about Turing Machines, are either delves nothing about the technical details or is too mathematical at the start, which makes for bad substitutes for Turing's original writings. Granted there are not much on the German Enigma machines and their encoding and deciphering of messages. This being said about what may enhance the field of artificial intelligence since intelligence may be highly employed in the code breaking of Enigma, it is part of lost history and I doubt that anyone has any files on this aspect to describe something with some originality such as Alan Turing. Nevertheless, this book is both excellently approachable even if one has basic Biology or how computers' working parts represent non-human intelligence can be simulated.
I was able to understand most the material in the first couple of chapters upon first reading, but upon second reading, I was able to find this book very interesting because there were material that I thought that I knew upon first reading, the second time around reveals to me that I don't know them that well to have depth in learning from this highly deserved classic.

'Sales 7 Statistical Forecasting..." is an extremely enlightening book that offers a unique way of combining sales and statistical forecasting to provide more accurate forecasting. This book came along at a good time for me as I am just getting started launching a worldwide remote computer support business and I have no idea on how to collect data and forecast what regions and demographics to target to produce the most initial sales. i will be sing the advice and techniques in this book and I feel like I will have a good starting point.

This book is packed with great insight

Forecasting is not easy but is invaluable in business. This great book talks about combining both Sales and Statistical Forecasting to get more accurate results. As I’m not the most technical person I appreciated the author’s break-down of terms in the beginning of the book, made the rest of the read much easier. This is a very straight-forward guide book with great focus on the subject, no diversions and beating around the bush. Anyone working in a business that deals with supply and demand will find value in this book.

A must read for fans of the Iron Druid.

If you are a fan of the Iron Druid series of fantasy novels, this will be a great read. These nine short stories fill some of the gaps left by the novels. Like all of Hearne's books, this one is a fun, fast read. I will say that if you haven't read the Iron Druid novels, this isn't a good place to start. You will enjoy this book more if you are familiar with the other books. So, Iron Druid fans, here is something to tide you over until book nine in the series comes out. The author says to consider this as book 8.5 in the series.

Not the best

I have read and loved all of the Iron Druid stories (including all the novellas/short stories) and this is the weakest. The first two stories here feel like outtakes that fell onto the cutting room floor because they were unnecessary action scenes that go nowhere. Readers who enjoy Hearne's dialog writing will find them lacking. The third is a gentle reworking of the previously published The Demon Barker of Wheat Street. It breaths life into the book and the rest of the stories are more vibrant, with enjoyable dialog and action. While not the best this is a decent stopgap for fans waiting for the next Iron Druid novel.

Need more iron Druid?

Well, this is your "fix" until the next book in Kevin Hearne's marvelous and phantasmagorical series comes out- and there's not even a title for that book announced yet.

In the words of Kevin himself:" Y’all should consider this book 8.5 and I hope you’ll trust me when I say it’s a lot of fun. It includes nine Iron Druid stories narrated by Atticus, Owen, Granuaile, and Perun. "

As with most collections of short stories you have a mixed lot- but in this case not a bad one in the lot. Personally I like that stories with Atticus and Oberon (The druid's Irish wolfhound, who has some of the best lines in the series) but the others are fun reads too.

As with the other eight books, this book contains plenty of action seasoned with sly humor and wit. Atticus O’Sullivan (The "Iron Druid, so called as he was able to bind iron and thus is mostly magic proof) can "Talk" with Oberon you see, and the Wolfhound responds just about as you would expect a hound to- with great longing for sausages and tummy rubs.

Atticus O’Sullivan aka Siodhachan O Suileabhain is now over two thousand years old, and has been on the run ever since he stole Fragarach (a magical sword) from the Tuatha Dé Danann. Now he has a druid-trainee of his own, the lovely and smart-mouthed Granuaile.

Fans of Fantasy and of this series should get this book. Although it is called "8.5" you could start here if you liked, but best is to start with Hounded.
