"I appreciate the contemporary content, especially examples that illustrate the importance of energy loss, energy utilization. Although not related to energy in particular, I like example 9.1. It draws on intuition, uses some thermodynamics to prove that volume additivity may not be what is expected. This allows students to have a complete understanding of the topic through mathematical proof and illustration."
"I believe the text does a good job of helping the student learn to apply thermodynamics. When working through an example they do not just show the quick solution but walk the reader through the thought process needed to solve the problem. They at times, pause to introduce (remind) the reader of some mathematical principle that will aid in the solution instead of just assuming the reader already knows it. The also use marginal notes to ask conceptual questions and thoughts of the consequences of using some other route."
About the Author
Kevin D. Dahm joined the Rowan University Chemical Engineering department in 1999, and was promoted from Associate Professor to Professor in 2013. He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute in 1992 and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1998. He has published over 30 journal articles, many of which are in the area of engineering pedagogy, on topics such as instilling metacognition in engineering students, pedagogically sound uses for process simulation, and assessment of student learning. He has received four national awards from the American Society for Engineering Education: the 2002 ASEE PIC-III Award, the 2003 Joseph J. Martin Award, the 2004 Raymond Fahien Award, and the 2005 Corcoran Award. In addition, he and his father Donald Dahm authored the book Interpreting Diffuse Reflectance and Transmittance: A Theoretical Introduction to Absorption Spectroscopy of Scattering Materials. Prior to joining Rowan University, he was a postdoctoral researcher at UC Berkeley and an adjunct professor at North Carolina A&T State University.
Donald P. Visco, Jr. is the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies and a Professor of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering in the College of Engineering at the University of Akron. Previously he taught at Tennessee Technological University. Professor Visco's research work focuses on molecular design and thermodynamic modeling. He has won several awards for his research and educational activities, including both the Department of Energy PECASE and the ASEE National Outstanding Teaching Award. He has served as Chair of both the ASEE Chemical Engineering Division as well as the Education Division of AIChE. Professor Visco received both his B.S. and Ph. D. degrees in Chemical Engineering from the University at Buffalo, State University of New York.

From one of Visco's students...

This is a good text.
Background: This text was used in Spring 2014 for Donald P. Visco's undergraduate course in Equilibrium Thermodynamics taught within the Chemical Engineering Department at The University of Akron. This course was taken by mostly STEM and Honors students. This was the first semester of the text's publication. The class completed Chapters 1-14
Content: This text is thorough. Derivations are easy to follow with steps clearly outlined and assumptions clearly stated. The text pushes the student to question why thermodynamic relationships exist at both micro- and macroscopic levels. Chapter Problems and Concept Questions are challenging but not overwhelming.
Positives: The text seems to have been the right level for students. I personally learned more from this text than in any previous class. The text was well-reviewed, and errors were sparse--unlike many other Chemical Engineering texts. I will be keeping this text available for reference, something I cannot say for other texts.
Negatives: Certain mainstream methods are only briefly examined in this text. A prime example is UNIFAC, which is only given a half page of explanation in the text. There also a strong reliance on spreadsheet programs in the later portion of the text with relationship modeling. While the latter issue appears to be de facto way of teaching 1-, 2-parameter Margules, Van Laar, etc...the amount of work required to complete Chapter Problems substantially increases in the later chapters of the text.
Important Negative: The binding was mediocre, and the printing itself was poor quality. The ink appears to be cheap (can wash off really easily) and is extremely faded throughout the book in various places. The publisher really did a subpar job with the printing of the text, and it's bad enough to push away from the craftsmanship of the content.
Conclusion: This is a solid alternative to other thermodynamic textbooks on the market. While my class obviously benefited from having the author as the professor for my thermodynamics course, I believe this text is useful in many classrooms. The textbook certainly was not rushed to market by the professors and editors, but the publishing house really released a subpar product.
Overall, a good text.

This book Dahminates the rest

I'm in Dahm's thermo class and I can say this textbook is the best one I've used in my undergrad thus far. The problems are a good representation of what you should be learning, and the examples are very clear. In addition, the book is very good at explaining some very abstract concepts, which is probably one of the hardest things about thermodynamics. I recommend the text book and if you go to Rowan, definitely take Dahm.

Terrible scanning on the e-book makes the diagrams in the appendix unreadable, which are pretty important if you ever want to get your homework done.
