It's Neil Gaiman. That's all you need to know. Read it.

Such an absolutely delightful tale this was. I fell in love with American Gods long after most of the book world had been telling me for years 'YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK.' And they were right, of course. I should listen more. When I found out Anansi Boys was along a similar vein, I was so excited! Because for me, it's very difficult to find books that are exactly like this, with characters so flawed and complex, who screw up a lot, but are also brave and find themselves through the course of a magical fairy tale. That is exactly my very favorite kind of book, and I never knew it was until I discovered this author. This one is much less dense than American Gods, but not in a bad way. Less characters and intertwining plots, but I found that to be an advantage, as I very much liked who lived among these pages. I think that's really the core of what I like so much; so much life is given to everyone and everything. An entire world is unwrapped for you to explore, some of it dark and violent (he always has that) but also beautiful and always highlighting the resilience of the human spirit. And that is such a nice thing to celebrate.

Sometimes I will go a long time without reading something like this, and I'll read several sub-par books in a row, and then I'll remember that there is magic in the book world and I run to it.

Sometimes you just don't know how much you need to read Neil Gaiman until you read Neil Gaiman. You probably need to, and this is an excellent choice.

I Loved It!!!

This was my third Gaiman book. I confess, his allure and rabid fan base was lost on me. I wasn't moved by American Gods and Stardust for me was somewhat meh. Anansi Boys did a lot to alleviate those feelings. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and was constantly reaching for it. Gaiman is an powerful storyteller. He weaves adult fairy tales which is something I didn't think would interest me. Enter Fat Charlie and Spider and Rosie and Graham Coats and Minerva and Mrs Higgens and Bustumonte and the list goes on. A fascinating book with characters that came alive for me and rooted in African mythology. There was also some hidden depth in the story revolving around the notion that people can change and grow and become more than what others expect. Plot was somewhat cliched and predictable but so what. This was well imagined and well told. I loved it!!

STRUCTURE > Content

Excellent book. It's one of the few in my circle of "go-to"s to be relevant.
I learned a tremendous amount from this book, after attaining my Practitioner Certification.
Peter shows that, NLP is a methodology first and foremost, and it concerns itself with the STRUCTURE not the CONTENT.
He goes off the tracks of standard NLP here and there, by presenting his view point. The heart of NLP is experimentation, and development.
This helped me to realize, that I don't have to be boxed in and adhere strictly to what has been presented before. Flexibility is key.
This book also helped me to see, the structure of the techniques I learned. He makes a good observation that, a great deal of Trainer's haven't developed their skills as much as they probably should, and therefore hide behind the magic of the techniques.
He shows how the techniques themselves aren't magical, it's the structure and therefore the function that is. Great shift in philosophy for me.
This liberates the reader, giving permission to come up with personal techniques for individual clients on the spot.
All in all this is an excellent book and I feel justified spending the $40~.

AWESOME!

I liked this book. Peter has made this manual very much useful for those who has attended his or anyone other NLP programs. His concepts are bit different than traditional nlp practitioner but his point of view and his explanation is precise. I am looking forward to his new edition of 'NLP for Business'.
The only problem with this manual is that it has no index but I personally didn't find it so much annoying.

Nice and Simple

I have to say, for ninety nine cents, this was a good buy. Sure, you could probably find drawing tutorials online for free, but I think a dollar is worth saving myself the time and effort of searching for free stuff. I have a couple of Kindle readers, but I use this particular book on my Kindle for PC app. I have a laptop, so it's very easy for me to set it at the back edge of my drawing table and have enough room for pencil and paper.

I tried so hard to copy the eyes I was seeing in manga drawings, and was always getting it wrong. The best thing about this booklet, is it's simplicity. The different eye-types are broken down into super simple shapes. I recommend practicing those shapes and learning to place them on the head before trying to draw the eyes with curves, irises, and shines. That's the hardest part about drawing manga eyes; figuring out how to get them on a head. Using the boxy eye shapes will help you focus on eye placement. Then you can add the bells and whistles later.

Use this book on your PC and enlarge the font so the pictures will be easier to see. It's a short read, but has all the basics you need to advance on your own.

The Eyes Have It!

I'm very much a beginner and have been struggling with eyes. This tutorial breaks it down and makes it so simple. What I like about it most is that it doesn't just show you how to draw eyes and various eye shapes, but it also shows you how to draw eyes from different angles -- which I hadn't realized was the whole reason the faces I draw have looked so... kinda... off. Like I said, I'm a beginner at this -- but after an hour with this book, I'm a lot better than I was before.

Note that this is not a long book. If it was printed, it would be more of a booklet. But definitely long enough to justify a buck, IMO. Also note that I used the Kindle app on my iPad rather than an actual Kindle -- but it still looked terrific.

I't alright

I am giving this 4 stars for content. It is not your typical how to draw book, but it does have pointers and ideas to make you a better artist. I am sure if a person took the time to do their suggestions as little mini lessons they would see some of their skills grow. On the down side most of us looking for a how to draw book would like step by step details. This book really does not have that.This can be good or bad, as we may become more attached to how some one does something, Instead of learning several ways so we can create and mature our own ideas. It is worth the 99 cents not to have to search for hours all over the web for the same content for free.

On the subtleties of language and delicacies of southern Spain

Though this edition is intended for didactic purposes, it is totally worth reading. It includes explanations of certain concepts and historic characters. Sender's novel shows an impressive mastery of Spanish, Spanish Gypsy, and English that will keep you laughing from beginning to end... It may also make you cry. It's the story of a progressive Californian girl who goes to Southern Spain to do research for her thesis, which will focus on Gypsy culture. Because she is very serious a researcher, she decides she ought to have a Gypsy boyfriend in order to better understand the object of her study. That is where the old and the new, the archaic and the trendy collide. She learns of the profound passion for life, for jokes, for unaffected philosophy of Gypsy culture manifested through music, chant, wine. She also learns a thing or two about love in the process. Though light in the surface, this novel has some interesting life lessons.

A Near-Miraculous Achievement

This 70-year-old book almost defies categorization, for its stunning discoveries and – perhaps even more – for the cultural understanding it fostered (which carries on to the present day). If the practice of “anthropology” brings to mind picking at dusty ruins, its offshoot “cultural anthropology” might conjure up studying tribal rituals in a native habitat. Remarkably, Ruth Benedict called herself one of this odd breed and her task (begun soon after the empire of Japan was defeated in World War Two) would daunt anyone, regardless of occupational labels: report to the occupying US military how to understand and rehabilitate a defeated nation whose traditions in every walk of life were – by admission on both sides – inexplicably alien to Americans. That Ms. Benedict succeeded represents a remarkable achievement and deserves celebration – and not just among anthropologists.

War always imposes strange tasks, from deciphering codes to building unprecedented weapons. But Benedict’s task might top them all for hubris: the thought that the culture, mores and traditions of the Japanese nation could, not only be laid bare, but actually *understood* by foreigners for the purpose of recommending how to reconstruct it after a devastating world war. Add the fact that this was requested by the conquering military and subject to bureaucracy and deadlines and the odds against its success look distressingly high.

But Benedict succeeded not only in her primary task but set a gold standard for cultural understanding. In a new foreword to this edition, noted Japan scholar Ian Buruma (author of “Inventing Japan”, among many others) rightly lauds how Benedict seemingly didn’t have a biased bone in her body: she approached Imperial Japan utterly fresh, not seeing it through a Western (or any other cultural tradition) lens. Her job required she not only see the world as the Japanese did at the time, but *how* that worldview led to their empire’s wartime actions and *what* could therefore be done to stop (or at least ameliorate) it – thereby ensuring that it didn’t happen again.

To these ends, some of the detail Benedict unearths still has the power to astound – consider:

Imperial Japan didn’t attack China, other East Asian countries, or even the United States to conquer land or achieve some other aggressive purpose; rather, its stated wartime aim was to simply “restore its rightful place in the world” (which was seen at the time as insufficiently lofty). Benedict points out the Japanese placed immense stock in the world being in “proper balance” and their view that every nation must “take its proper place in the world”. She notes Japanese envoys – on the very day Pearl Harbor was attacked by Imperial Japan – handed an explicit example of this as a memorandum to American Secretary of State Cordell Hull: “The Japanese government cannot tolerate the perpetuation of the present situation since it runs directly counter to Japan’s fundamental policy to enable each nation to enjoy its proper station in the world.”

Other cultural markers are subtler but no less revealing. Whether it’s living one’s life as if in constant emotional – or even physical – debt (*on*, or obligations passively incurred), attempting to ease such debts to authorities (e.g., the emperor, one’s parents), or repaying debts via duties (*giri*) to the world (!) and one’s name (reputation), the mid-century Japanese view of life was, to put it mildly, radically different from anywhere in Europe or America. Benedict is numbingly thorough in explaining how a society – and by extension a government and military – functioning along these lines found its way into a global war.

I found very little here to dislike; as noted, Benedict succeeds in her near-impossible task so well it seems unduly argumentative to quibble. About the only perspective I found myself wanting was more comparisons with western societies around the same time (e.g., late ‘40s); this would be especially useful for a reader (like your reviewer) reading this over seven decades later. Admittedly this would have made for a much longer book and would have begged differences between Europe, America and others.

No matter. ‘The Chrysanthemum and the Sword’ holds up supremely well and reads as a veritable textbook of cultural research. In a world where misunderstandings across nations can have ever-graver consequences, rehabilitating the humble role of cultural anthropologist might pay some unexpected dividends – providing those taking it on have a reasonable fraction of Ruth Benedict’s insight.

He said Ruth Benedict was the first Caucasian to capture the essence of what it meant to be Japanese and explain it to other so they would understand. Ruth Benedict was an adviser to the occupation forces in Japan after World War II. She is credited with helping make the transition from war to peace a success story for both the Japanese people and Occupation forces.

Insightful "outside" view on Japanese culture

I was not sure what to expect when I started to read this book on Japanese culture written by an American scholar of Ruth Benedict. As a Korean, the culture of my country is closer to that of Japan than the States, and I was not sure whether there is something I can learn from the book. I was plain wrong --- I thoroughly learned the value of “outside” opinion. I guess there are points she didn’t get right, but it is her who pointed out many important issues of Japanese culture which people living inside just cannot appreciate. She explained several key concepts which are uniquely Japanese, such as importance of hierarchy (“taking one’s proper station”), debt (on) and repayment (gimu, giri), Also explained are the concept of “giri to one’s name”, and the seemingly paradoxical situation of emphasizing self-discipline and generosity on physical pleasure. What I find particularly helpful are examples, taken from real life in Japan, pertaining to the concept she wants to explain.

About the Author
Walter Rogers served as president and CFO of The Acacia Group, a landscape firm in Tucson, Arizona, until 2007 when his firm was acquired by Olsson Associates, a multidisciplinary engineering and design firm. He currently serves as a senior landscape architect in Olsson's Tucson office. He has thirty-five years' experience working as a landscape architect and holds an MLA from the University of Massachusetts and an MBA from the University of Phoenix. He served on the landscape architecture faculties of the University of Arizona, the State University of New York at Syracuse, and the Gloucestershire College of Art and Design, Cheltenham, England.

A must-have for the LA library

I took a chance on this one, and I was thoroughly surprised. This book is completely laid out in detail start to finish, everything you need, just like the outline shows. I am using this to study for the LARE, and I'm shocked that this isn't listed as a resource book, nor was it used in my professional practice class at university. I would highly recommend it to students and emerging professionals wanting to round-out their understanding of the LA profession and the legal side of the office, as well professionals wanting to start your own business. So much content, great book for the money.

About the Author
James M. Wahlen, Ph.D. is the James R. Hodge Chair, Professor of Accounting, Chair of the Accounting Department and the former Chairman of the MBA Program at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan and has served on the faculties of the University of Chicago, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, INSEAD, the University of Washington, and Pacific Lutheran University. Dr. Wahlen's teaching and research interests focus on financial accounting, financial statement analysis, and the capital markets. His research investigates earnings quality and earnings management, earnings volatility as an indicator of risk, fair value accounting for financial instruments, accounting for loss reserve estimates by banks and insurers, stock market efficiency with respect to accounting information, and testing the extent to which future stock returns can be predicted with earnings and other financial statement information. His research has been published in a wide array of academic and practitioner journals in accounting and finance. He has had public accounting experience in both Milwaukee and Seattle and is a member of the American Accounting Association. He has received numerous teaching awards during his career. In his free time Dr. Wahlen loves spending time with his wife and daughters; spoiling his incredibly adorable granddaughter, Ailsa; outdoor sports (biking, hiking, skiing, golf); cooking (and, of course, eating); and listening to rock music (especially if it is loud and live).

Stephen P. Baginski, Ph.D. is the Herbert E. Miller Chair in Financial Accounting at the University of Georgia's J.M. Tull School of Accounting. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois in 1986, and he has taught a variety of financial and managerial undergraduate, MBA, and executive education courses at Indiana University, Illinois State University, the University of Illinois, Northeastern University, Florida State University, Washington University in St. Louis, the University of St. Galen, the Swiss Banking Institute at the University of Zurich, Bocconi, and INSEAD. Dr. Baginski has published articles in a variety of journals including The Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Contemporary Accounting Research, Review of Accounting Studies, The Journal of Risk and Insurance, Quarterly Review of Finance and Economics, and Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting. His research primarily deals with the causes and consequences of voluntary management disclosures of earnings forecasts, and he also investigates the usefulness of financial accounting information in security pricing and risk assessment. Dr. Baginski has served on several editorial boards and as an associate editor at Accounting Horizons and The Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting. He has won numerous undergraduate and graduate teaching awards at the department, college, and university level during his career, including receipt of the Doctoral Student Inspiration Award from students at Indiana University. Dr. Baginski loves to watch college football, play golf, and run (very slowly) in his spare time.

Mark T. Bradshaw, Ph.D., is a Professor of Accounting at the Carroll School of Management of Boston College. Dr. Bradshaw received a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan Business School, and earned a BBA summa cum laude with highest honors in accounting and master's degree in financial accounting from the University of Georgia. He previously taught at University of Chicago, Harvard Business School, and University of Georgia. He was a Certified Public Accountant Arthur Andersen & Co. in Atlanta. Dr. Bradshaw conducts research on capital markets, specializing in the examination of securities analysts and related financial reporting issues. His research has been published in a variety of academic and practitioner journals. He is an Editor for The Accounting Review and currently serves as Associate Editor for Journal of Accounting and Economics, Journal of Accounting Research and Journal of Financial Reporting. He is also on the Editorial Board of Review of Accounting Studies and the Journal of International Accounting Research and is a reviewer for numerous other accounting and finance journals. He has also authored a book with Brian Bruce, Analysts, Lies, and Statistics - Cutting through the Hype in Corporate Earnings Announcements. The content is very good, I only hope the format can improve.

I like the comprehensiveness of the book; it covered many of the techniques and theories used for valuation.

Yet, there are two observations that can use some improvement:

(1) It can use more "tables" or "diagrams". In the middle chapter of this book, it has this paragraph:

"The division experienced an average annual sales growth rate of 16.4 percent for 2006 through 2008, which includes sales volume growth of 4.0 percent, net price growth of 2.1 percent, and growth from acquisitions and foreign exchange of 9.6 percent."

This same paragraph can save me at least 2 minutes, if it is presented like this below:


Sales 16.8%
Volume 4.0%
Price 2.1%
Acquisition/Foreign Exchange 9.6%

(2) Sometimes, it is good to tell readers where a number came from. See example below:

"We will assume net capital spending in Year +1 is $XXX, which is 7.5 percent increase from YYYY"

The author did not say where this 7.5 came from. I turned to the appendix and pull these info out:

Year YYYY Year +1
$ ZZZ $ XXX

And then computed that (XXX - ZZZ) / ZZZ = 7.5 %

You will need additional sources.

Aside from the quality of the actual book I received (spine completely broken, pages highlighted, half of the pages falling out) the organization of this text was very difficult to grasp. I needed another text book to fill in the blanks. In the end, it was very helpful to pull information from many many sources. But this is my first textbook which required supplementation to in order to provide total comprehension.

Rent vs buy?

I would recommend renting this book for the course. The book was recommended read for my FSA class.. This edition is current with latest reporting rules.. However, the text is verbose (-almost conversational) and it would help to trim the text to convey only what is most relevant.
The rental book was of good quality and was delivered within 2 days.. Would definitely recommend renting to buying.

Beautiful & Unusual Script Fonts W/NUMBERS

I will use this font book for making and transferring words on clay pieces, then carve the clay lettering / numbers. There are so many different styles within this book, I will never be able to use them all, beautiful. Also I did not know whether it would contain numeric fonts, IT DOES IN ABOUT 99% OF THE STYLES. I am very, very happy with this book.

Actually as titled....

It is JUST fonts, doesn't give nib measurements for even font writing or any tips at all. It is very pretty to loo at and has a fair variety of fonts but if you are doing anything with calligraphy (which is why I got it) definately get an additional informative book along with it.
