From Publishers Weekly
Creativity expert Ken Robinson has carved out a niche for himself in the self-help genre. In his latest title, a sequel to the bestselling The Element, Robinson puts forth a strategy for self-analysis and introspection designed to bring about personal transformation. A British native now living in the United States, Robinson, with his conversational tone and relaxed cadence, seems to go out of his way to avoid the forceful delivery generally associated with motivational messages. Even the portions of the recording devoted to Robinson's own inspiring story of coping with the challenges of polio at a young age seem low-key, though still engaging. A Viking hardcover. (May)

Element = Aptitude and Passion
By Caroline L.
Ken Robinson wrote this book as a follow-up to his other book The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything by Ken Robinson, Lou Aronica (Reprint Edition) [Paperback(2009)]. He takes a 360 view of your life and walks you through it all. You do a series of exercises where you ask yourself deep questions. You find your element when you find the intersection between your passions and aptitudes.

He has three major principles:

Principle #1: Your Life is Unique.

We're all different.

We're all a mix of nature and nurture.

Principle #2: You create your own life.

Carl Jung: "I am not what has happened to me, I am what I choose to become."

Principle #3: Life is Organic

We all change. We don't have a linear path. He incorporates a lot of examples of successful people who had a completely nonlinear path to success.

Vivek Wadhwa, famous for his work on immigrants working in the technology field in the United States, realized that "there is no link between what you study in college and how successful or otherwise you are later in your life."

Ken Robinson talks about a lot of the existing literature and methods for finding out what your passion is and he's fairly critical of them. He talks about what's called the Forer Effect, also known as the Barnum Effect. You mold your personality to conform with what people tell you your personality incorporates. Robinson is in favor of using personality types to describe yourself, but he says not to let the personality definitions (MBTI for example) limit you.

He also takes a lot of time to talk about happiness and positive psychology. He differentiates between your physical and spiritual well-being. When I was in the Andes and taking an anthropology class, I learned that the indigenous culture believes in two types of life force. One is the breath of life and the other I would call the force of spirit, just like Scott Russell Sanders' The Force of Spirit. He talks about Gretchen Rubin The Happiness Project: Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun.

His definition of happiness comes from Sonja Lyubomirsky: Happiness is the experience of joy, contentment, and well-being combined with a sense that life is good and worthwhile. I felt like that was a really comprehensive yet concise summary and I think that the happiness section was the best part of this book.

Robinson goes on to talk about the 5 different kinds of well-being: career, social, financial, physical, and community. He asks you what sorts of hurdles or responsibilities you have and what sorts of risks that you can take. He asks you who you want to be, but in a much more specific way.

He also talks about Bonnie Ware The Top Five Regrets of the Dying: A Life Transformed by the Dearly Departing, because a lot of his action steps at the end of the book have to do with mitigating risks. I found it interesting that a lot of the suggestions that he had were in line with things that Barry Schwartz said at the end of The Paradox of Choice: Why More Is Less.

I've seen Robinson's TED talk and expected more of the book to be about the education system and creativity. While he does talk about them, he encourages the reader to engage in a lot of introspection through a variety of exercises; each chapter ends with a few questions about you and your life. My favorite exercises had to do with vision boards. I used Pinterest to create them and I really loved having a concrete, pictorial representation of more abstract concepts, such as the activities that I do in daily life.

Robinson also says that it's all an iterative process and we grow organically (Principle #3), so nobody should expect his or her desires at one point to be the same as at another point in his or her life. I know that it's valuable for me to read this as a recent college graduate and that I'll read it again, further down the line.

Beyond a Self Help, Feel Good Book
By John M. Clarke
I loved the book. I'm retiring, albeit reluctantly, from the work that I have loved doing for 40 years. This book comes at the right time for me since I have been struggling with what I can do with my time for this stage of my life other than be a greeter at Wal-Mart. I took Sir Ken's advice and began to take stock of my aptitudes and interests. At various times in my life, I have dabbled in cooking and art with some degree of success and I plan to pursue these interests now and after retirement. Having a passion in life, according to Sir Ken, feeds your spirit and ultimately this is what makes living an adventure. I love his sense of humor (for a first hand experience of a genuinely funny and entertaining talk, see Ken Robinson on the TED website ), his wonderful and realistic way of viewing the world, and sage advice on how to live a fulfilling life regardless of your circumstances. the real life examples were inspiring and thought provoking. This is one book that I will pass along to friends and family looking how to experience life to the fullest.

Par for the course
By Abner Rosenweig
I read an excerpt or an interview about Finding Your Element somewhere and somehow I got hooked into the idea that this book contained some revolutionary wisdom on discovering your true calling in life. For me, this wasn't the case. The book is stuffed with a great many tired platitudes, and its "revolutionary insight" basically boils down to the obvious idea of "do what you love."

I'm not saying this is bad advice, or that the commonsense wisdom, spoken through the silver-tongued mouth of Sir Ken Robinson, won't inspire some to get off their butts and take action. But the majority of the book contains disappointingly obvious cliches backed up by real-life accounts of people who have followed this obvious advice, and, unsurprisingly, had positive results. *It worked for Sally-Jo... It can work for you, too!*

For me, the book never digs deep enough into the gritty, challenging areas of helping people transition to a meaningful career. Rarely if ever, for example, does the text address the fact that we live in a techno-industrial civilization that is specifically designed to prevent most people from fulfilling their individual creative potential, and to enslave us in a monolithic, hierarchical corporate economy. "You always have choices," Sir Ken boasts confidently. Well, in today's world of neoliberal domination, choices are becoming narrower and narrower for the vast majority of the population.

The book feels somewhat out of touch with the struggles of everyday people. It's very genial throughout, and the tone is avuncular, as if a rich old uncle is talking to his young rich nephew about whether or not he should be a horse jockey or continue in the family silver business. It's not easy to find my element when I can barely stay afloat in the economy, and it's a tragedy that Finding Your Element is such a luxury in contemporary society, where there's more than enough wealth for everyone to share, were it more equally distributed.

I'm fighting desperately to find my element, but sometimes I feel it's a losing battle because of the intense pressure the system puts on my back to conform and become a wage slave so I can survive.

Criticisms aside, if you're looking for a basic book to give you a few ideas about how to expand your world, you could do worse. Some bits of wisdom that genuinely resonated:
• Finding your element is about discovering what lies within you and, in doing so, transforming what lies before you.
• Being in your element gives you energy. Not being in it takes it from you.
• Many of the opportunities you have in your life are generated by the energy you create around you.
• The search for your element is a two-way journey: an inward journey to explore what lies within you and an outward journey to explore opportunities in the world around you.
• Do all you can to explore new avenues of possibilities in yourself and in the world around you.
• You may be better than you think at what you love. You may underestimate your talent because you set unreasonably high standards for yourself. Having high standards is good, provided you're not immobilized by self-criticism.
• Connecting with people who share your Element can have tremendous benefits for you and them.
• The most common regret: Not having the courage to live a life true to yourself.

Lies, Incorporated: The World of Post-Truth Politics, by Ari Rabin-Havt, Media Matters for America

A stunning investigation of the history of organized misinformation in politics.

In today’s post-truth political landscape, there is a carefully concealed but ever-growing industry of organized misinformation that exists to create and disseminate lies in the service of political agendas. Ari Rabin-Havt and Media Matters for America present a revelatory history of this industry—which they've dubbed Lies, Incorporated—and show how it has crippled legislative progress on issues including tobacco regulation, public health care, climate change, gun control, immigration, abortion, and same-sex marriage. Eye-opening and indispensable, Lies, Incorporated takes an unflinching look at the powerful network of politicians and special interest groups that have launched coordinated assaults on the truth to shape American politics.

Chapter 1

The Birth of Lies, Incorporated: Tobacco

Lies, Incorporated, was born during a meeting of the titans of the tobacco industry at the Plaza Hotel in New York City on December 15, 1953. In attendance were the presidents of American Tobacco, Benson & Hedges, Philip Morris, and U.S. Tobacco—the four largest tobacco companies at the time—as well as the CEOs of R.J. Reynolds and Brown & Williamson.

Previously, the group had gathered only for social occasions, at charity events and various industry award ceremonies. This meeting had a far more serious agenda. Earlier that month, Dr. Ernst Wynder of the Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research published the findings of a study linking cigarette tar to cancer in mice. The research attracted intense media attention and put a spotlight on the health risks associated with tobacco. Widely read publications including Life magazine, The New York Times, and the Reader’s Digest (in a piece titled “Cancer by the Carton”) had already published major articles on the dangers of smoking. The looming crisis had to be dealt with, and the leading tobacco barons joined forces to fight back.

At the Plaza Hotel meeting, the heads of the tobacco companies met with John Hill, founder of the legendary public relations firm Hill & Knowlton. The company had built its reputation working for chemical companies, big oil, and other heavy industries. Profit was not Hill’s only motivation. He was a committed conservative, opposed to the idea of government regulations, even of carcinogens such as tobacco.

As far back as 1912, Dr. Isaac Adler suggested a link between tobacco and lung cancer in the “world’s first monograph on lung cancer,” while indicating more research was needed, as his conclusions were “not yet ready for final judgment.” In 1939, Franz Hermann Müller of Cologne Hospital published a study in which he demonstrated “that people with lung cancer were far more likely than non-cancer controls to have smoked.” This was confirmed in another, “more ambitious” study by “Eberhard Schairer and Eric Schöniger at the University of Jena” in 1943. These results became more conclusive as additional scholarly research was published through the 1950s and ’60s.

By the time Wynder’s study was published, the medical field—and the tobacco industry—had access to research concluding that the use of tobacco products posed a significant health risk. Hill believed the way to fight back was for the tobacco companies to join together, sponsor additional studies, and issue new “pro-cigarette” messaging using the word “research” to highlight the scientific nature of their counterarguments. The tobacco companies were not equipped internally to take on this role. For years they had worked to steal one another’s clients. Now they would need to defend the industry as a whole.

Following the meeting, Hill & Knowlton drafted a white paper that laid out a plan for the industry. “The grave nature of a number of recently highly publicized research reports on the effects of cigarette smoking .  . . [has] confronted the industry with a serious problem of public relations,” wrote the firm. “The situation is one of extreme delicacy. There is much at stake and the industry group, in moving into the field of public relations, needs to exercise great care not to add fuel to the flames.”

Using the resources of the companies represented at the meeting, Hill & Knowlton recommended establishing the austere-sounding Tobacco Industry Research Committee. “The underlying purpose of any activity at this stage should be reassurance of the public through wider communication of facts to the public,” wrote Hill & Knowlton in the white paper. “It is important that the public recognize the existence of weighty scientific views which hold there is no proof that cigarette smoking is a cause of lung cancer.”

This purported research committee, whose public role was providing independent data on the risks of smoking, was in fact a front for Hill & Knowlton. The tobacco companies supplied an initial budget of $1.2 million and its offices were located one floor below Hill & Knowlton’s in the Empire State Building.

The group announced its existence with “A Frank Statement to Cigarette Smokers.” Run as a paid advertisement on January 4, 1954, in more than four hundred newspapers around the country, the statement claimed:

1. That medical research of recent years indicates many possible causes of lung cancer.

2. That there is no agreement among the authorities regarding what the cause is.

3. That there is no proof that cigarette smoking is one of the causes.

4. That statistics purporting to link cigarette smoking with the disease could apply with equal force to any one of many other aspects of modern life. Indeed the validity of the statistics themselves is questioned by numerous scientists.

The ad went on to describe the activities of the group:

1. We are pledging aid and assistance to the research effort into all phases of tobacco use and health. This joint financial aid will of course be in addition to what is already being contributed by individual companies.

2. For this purpose we are establishing a joint industry group consisting initially of the undersigned. This group will be known as TOBACCO INDUSTRY RESEARCH COMMITTEE.

3. In charge of the research activities of the Committee will be a scientist of unimpeachable integrity and national repute. In addition there will be an Advisory Board of scientists disinterested in the cigarette industry. A group of distinguished men from medicine, science and education will be invited to serve on this Board. These scientists will advise the Committee on its research activities.

According to Hill & Knowlton’s “progress report,” this ad reached more than 43 million Americans, costing a total of just over a quarter-million dollars. This advertising onslaught accomplished its intended purpose of overshadowing research informing the public of the dangers of tobacco.

The Tobacco Industry Research Committee was created to cast doubt on scientific consensus that smoking cigarettes causes cancer, to convince the media that there were two sides to the story about the risks of tobacco and that each side should be considered with equal weight. Finally it sought to steer politicians away from damaging the economic interests of the tobacco companies. Hill & Knowlton helped the industry carry out this mission.

Due to the success of Hill’s strategy, the methods he pioneered would be employed by a variety of players in Lies, Incorporated, over the decades to come, impacting the public debate on issues including climate change, health care, and gun control. If your goal is simply to keep the status quo in place, in this case keeping millions of people addicted to a dangerous product with no government intervention, then confusion is a useful tool. If the science is in doubt, why take action that would harm the economic well-being of farmers and thousands of others who work in the tobacco industry, as well as telling millions of Americans they should not engage in a favorite leisure activity? What made this strategy morally reprehensible was that the companies knew from the moment they launched their effort that cigarettes were killing millions of people. Their success at delaying action by the federal government and other health care authorities, caused by an unnecessary battle over science, undoubtedly cost millions more Americans their lives, in addition to hundreds of millions, if not billions of dollars, in health care costs.

The “Frank Statement” was the first step in a major public relations campaign whose goal was to undermine scientific research. It represented a major break from previous PR strategies. The tobacco industry’s prior instinct had been to mitigate the health risks suggested by the research, rather than to attack science head-on. Thus, each company had been competing against the others with claims that its cigarettes were the healthiest on the market. John Hill convinced them this was a counterproductive strategy.

In May 1954, Hill & Knowlton presented the Tobacco Industry Research Committee with a booklet titled “A Scientific Perspective on the Cigarette Controversy.” More than two hundred thousand copies were printed and sent to 176,000 doctors as well as to thousands of reporters around the country.

Seeking more heft, Hill & Knowlton hired a scientific adviser to serve as a public face for its efforts. Dr. Clarence Cook Little, who previously served as a director of the American Cancer Society, took on the role with vigor.

Little had impeccable credentials. He was a research biologist and a former assistant dean of Harvard and president of the University of Maine and the University of Michigan. At the Tobacco Industry Research Committee, Little supervised the distribution of millions of dollars in grant money, maintaining for decades that “there [was] no demonstrated causal relationship between smoking or any disease,” even after the science on the subject was indisputable. He insisted lung cancer was a genetic condition, not one caused by smoking.

Early on, Little’s role created controversy in the medical community. In The Atlantic, Dr. David D. Rutstein, head of the Preventive Medicine Department at the Harvard Medical School, wrote “An Open Letter to Dr. Clarence Cook Little” in October 1957. Citing eighteen studies in five countries, Rutstein accused Little of having “consistently ignored or brushed off all of the human evidence whenever a statement relating cigarette smoking and lung cancer has been released to the press by a research worker, by the British government through its Medical Research Council, or by the Surgeon General of the United States Public Health Service speaking for the United States government.”

He asked, “Is there really any justification for your continuing to demand the discovery of the ‘cause’ of lung cancer before we attempt to save human lives by recommending a decrease in cigarette smoking?”

If by 1957 the medical community had already reached consensus on the fact that smoking cigarettes caused lung cancer, why would a scientist like Dr. Little resist? Little was a believer in eugenics, which, post–World War II, had fallen out of favor. For Little, this belief was grounded in the notion that genetics predetermined the maladies our bodies were susceptible to, including cancer. The idea that cigarette smoke and not our DNA was the cause of cancer would undermine his belief structure. He would not be the first to turn a blind eye to facts in order to preserve his belief system. The scientists who work at the behest of corporate interests as part of Lies, Incorporated are often driven by ideology, sometimes tangentially linked to the subject at hand, not simply by money.

Employing scientists like Dr. Little as part of their effort would become a critical strategy for Lies, Incorporated. As Harvard science historian and coauthor of the book Merchants of Doubt Naomi Oreskes explained to me, “The credibility of the disinformation campaign depends upon having at least some real scientist who can stand up in public and make it seem as if there is a real scientific debate.”

In addition to publishing its own tobacco “research,” Hill & Knowlton ran an active campaign to alter news stories that were critical of the tobacco industry. The firm bragged about a story in “Cosmopolitan magazine that ‘was already in type’ ” when their efforts “resulted in ‘seven revisions and five qualifying additions.’ ”

Lies are... lies are... name the day
By enubrius
This is an extremely well-written, clear, concise itemisation of the far too many lies that organised corporations, interest groups, political parties, etc. have been telling the American people in order to maximise profits, maintain or achieve power, and, simply keep themselves and their friends in one position and the rest of us in a, shall we say, less desirable one.

It SHOULD be an eye-opening book

It SHOULD lead to outrage and reform and, at the LEAST peasants with pitchforks storming the palace

Only

You know, and I know, and, sadly, I'm sure the author(s) know that the only people who will read this are those who already do know, or suspect, what Rabin-Havt reveals AND who have been shlepping that pitchfork for a while now just waiting for the others to catch up

The big question, problem, and drawback is, as always: How do we get people OUTSIDE the choir to join in the song?

I don't know the answer, I just thought the question needs asking

Well reasearched and well written!
By DGR6989
This slim volume provides a useful overview of some of the deception campaigns that make legislative and regulatory solutions to pressing problems so difficult. Using the tobacco industry's infamous deception campaign as a model, this well researched and well written volume identifies a number of other deception campaigns aimed at forestalling or promoting legislation. Allthough some of this will be familiar to readers who have read Merchants of Doubt or similar works, this work is up-to-date and covers a number of importaint topics, including public health care, the impact of the national debt, immigration reform, gun safety, voter suppression laws, and gay marriage. This should be required reading for the news anchors and producers.

Read between the lies!
By ricky rocket
Very detailed and well written book on who and how lies get created for the political wedge issues. I always knew things such as "death panels" were lies but I didn't know how they originated until I read this book. There are 30+ pages of references in the back to counter those who might think this is just the left's spin on these issues.

I was watching the news last night about how NC overturned their voter id law. The Republican spin was that these laws are put in place to stop voter fraud. I immediately yelled "Bulls*%t!" at the TV screen after remembering the Voter ID chapter in the book that presented evidence that there essentially is no voter id fraud. My favorite detail is about a lady who filled out and turned in an absentee ballot for her daughter who was away at college, not realizing her daughter had already voted. She turned herself in and paid a fine.

As others have mentioned, the last chapter on how to solve this problem is weak. While it's true that there is not a silver bullet, and that in general "we the people" need to better educate ourselves on these issues, I am looking forward to the folllow-up book "Lies, Incorporated: "The People Awaken" which will provide solutions on how to help stop this epidemic.

Great Review and Study Summaries But Best as a Reference
By HeartRecords
I got this book as a reference for my introductory to histology college course. It is a great reference but not the best primary source of information due to the vast amount of biochemistry in the book. However, I must admit this book has a lot of detailed information. One great feature is the summaries at the end of every section which will contain a page of summary text and then some good slide pictures of representative structures. This is what I primarily use to review and has served me great in my exams over the past couple months.

A great update
By Jeffrey George
A major update to a good textbook and atlas for histology. I feel this is one of the few texts designed with the student in mind, especially with the addition of the Histology 101 pages at the end of each chapter.

It is the best organized textbook I have seen
By DanHays
The organization of the textbook is outstanding. The pictures are mostly in full color and of the highest quality. The summary at the end of each chapter is quite helpful in assisting in remembering. The text is well written and complete. It is the best organized textbook I have seen.
The underlining of important points in different colors is also extremely helpful. I enjoy studying this book because it is so well put together.
It far surpasses other Histology texts I have studied.

Spreadable Media: Creating Value and Meaning in a Networked Culture (Postmillennial Pop), by Henry Jenkins, Sam Ford, Joshua Green

Spreadable Media maps fundamental changes taking place in our contemporary media environment, a space where corporations no longer tightly control media distribution and many of us are directly involved in the circulation of content. It contrasts “stickiness”—aggregating attention in centralized places—with “spreadability”—dispersing content widely through both formal and informal networks, some approved, many unauthorized. Stickiness has been the measure of success in the broadcast era (and has been carried over to the online world), but “spreadability” describes the ways content travels through social media.   Following up on the hugely influential Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide, this book challenges some of the prevailing metaphors and frameworks used to describe contemporary media, from biological metaphors like “memes” and “viral” to the concept of “Web 2.0” and the popular notion of “influencers.” Spreadable Media examines the nature of audience engagement, the environment of participation, the way appraisal creates value, and the transnational flows at the heart of these phenomena. It delineates the elements that make content more spreadable and highlights emerging media business models built for a world of participatory circulation. The book also explores the internal tensions companies face as they adapt to the new communication reality and argues for the need to shift from “hearing” to “listening” in corporate culture.   Drawing on examples from film, music, games, comics, television, transmedia storytelling, advertising, and public relations industries, among others—from both the U.S. and around the world—the authors illustrate the contours of our current media environment. They highlight the vexing questions content creators must tackle and the responsibilities we all face as citizens in a world where many of us regularly circulate media content. Written for any and all of us who actively create and share media content, Spreadable Media provides a clear understanding of how people are spreading ideas and the implications these activities have for business, politics, and everyday life.

Review
"Solid analysis and detailed examples to make it sticky enough for the intended readerships of media scholars, media professionals, and fans."-International Journal of Communication

“Something new is emerging from the collision of traditional entertainment media, Internet-empowered fan cultures, and the norms of sharing that are encouraged and amplified by social media. Spreadable Media is a compelling guide, both entertaining and rigorous, to the new norms, cultures, enterprises, and social phenomena that networked culture is making possible. Read it to understand what your kids are doing, where Hollywood is going, and how online social networks spread cultural productions as a new form of sociality.”-Howard Rheingold, author of Net Smart

"The best analysis to date of the radically new nature of digital social media as a communication channel. Its insights, based on a deep knowledge of the technology and culture embedded in the digital networks of communication, will reshape our understanding of cultural change for years to come."-Manuel Castells,Wallis Annenberg Chair of Communication Technology and Society, University of Southern California

"Content today, the authors suggest, can travel not only from the top down but also from the inside out. It is a remarkably different terrain than what we have been used to, one they effectively and stridently analyze."- Publishers Weekly

"A wide-ranging examination of the contemporary media environment as individuals increasingly control their own creation of content."-Kirkus

"In Spreadable Media, media theorist Henry Jenkins, formerly of MIT and now at USC, and his coauthors, digital strategists Sam Ford and Joshua Green, make a convincing case that fan involvement in the re-creation and circulation of media content is not just an interesting side effect of man-to-many multimedia networks and smartphone video editing apps, but a significant force for empowerment and exploitation in and of itself...If you are in the music, move, television, or game business, this book is a must read."-Strategy and Business

"It's about time a group of thinkers put the marketing evangelists of the day out to pasture with a thorough look at what makes content move from consumer to consumer, marketer to consumer and consumer to marketer. Instead of latching on to the notion that you can create viral content, Jenkins, Ford, and Green question the assumptions, test theories and call us all to task. Spreadable Media pushes our thinking. As a result, we'll become smarter marketers. Why wouldn't you read this book?"-Jason Falls,CEO of Social Media Explorer and co-author of No Bullshit Social Media

“Finally, a way of framing modern media creation and consumption that actually reflects reality and allows us to talk about it in a way that makes sense. It's a spreadable world and we are ALL part of it. Useful for anyone who makes media, analyzes it, consumes it, markets it or breathes.”-Jane Espenson,writer-producer of Battlestar Galactica, Once Upon a Time, and Husbands

“By critically interrogating the ways in which media artifacts circulate, Spreadable Media challenges the popular notion that digital content magically goes ‘viral.’ This book brilliantly describes the dynamics that underpin people's engagement with social media in ways that are both theoretically rich and publicly meaningful.”-Danah Boyd,Microsoft Research

"Spreadable Media is an essential read for anyone who wants to understand how media works today."-Deep Media

An ingenious but perhaps too multi-faceted look at why media spreads and why we want to spread it
By Tom Sales
It's a little bizarre that a popular (at least according to Amazon sales figures) book about passing along media or commentary has gone over a month without having a review posted. I think it's because this is an ingenious, yet jam-packed book that looks at online participation and the sharing of information from a unique perspective that just plain forces you to think. This is not a quick read.

While there are plenty of social media books out that look at the "new phenomenon" of sharing as an organizational strategy or as platforms of tools as compelling new ways to share, the authors of "Spreadable Media" look more at the material itself that is or isn't being shared. What characteristics of materials make people want to spread them? What's in it for the sharer? When people read, hear or watch something that makes them want to circulate it, what triggers that decision? The authors point out there's nothing really new about this motivation. The passing down of keepsakes, family heirlooms, newspaper articles, scrapbooks, family trees, etc. has gone on for generations. First the photocopier and now social media platforms have just made it easier and almost instantaneous.

The main focus of the book is on the broadcast, mass-media business model of "stickiness" of content vs. the parallel concept of "spreadability." It's becoming increasingly apparent that if media doesn't spread today, it's dead--like a film/song/book/work of art/best practice no one sees/hears/reads/studies/tries. So while there's a loss of control in allowing your audience to manipulate and pass along one's creative effort, there's also an expanded opportunity that it will uncover new audiences and be more widely acclaimed than if you protect it and threaten users for "stealing it." Corporations, institutions, universities and other power structures are starting to recognize that.

Perhaps one reason "Spreadable Media" may be slow to generate reviews is in the sheer breadth of their analysis. My personal reason for reading "Spreadable Media" was to create company communities where members will pass along content to co-workers and customers to expand product knowledge and benefits and ultimately to increase sales. Some of the most insightful information I've read about this topic is indeed covered in this book. The authors portray "lurkers" (the bane of online communities where the vast majority of members who only consume others' information without contributing any of their own) as only learning and biding their time until they too understand the rules and start to participate. In Chapter 5 they even describe what makes materials sharable. This will help me to completely rethink the development of content rather than just to focus on why community members are either engaged or not.

The density issue comes into play, however, as they go through a variety of entertainment, mass-media examples about how and why we are all moving toward spreadability. These examples are interesting to consider but can be difficult to digest. There are probably few readers who have all these perspectives who can follow these various threads. So if the authors have done anything "wrong" in the book it is just the amount of commentary on how much our culture is changing to address ways that we learn across all aspects of our lifestyles. In summary then, "Spreadable Media" is a great book but prepare yourself for some pretty deep but original thinking as Jenkins, Ford and Green argue for the increasingly networked world we're all living in.

Beyond participative and convergence culture
By Pedro Demo
Jenkins reinforces his thesis of participative and convergence culture, adding now the notion of spreadable media. People take advantage of digital devices to spread their artifacts particularly in social platforms, opening chances to build learning communities, fans activities, globalized movements (grassroots) etc. He tries to maintain highly critical view, avoiding to discover alternative paths where there aren't. Especially he cultivates profoundly critical position in face of capitalism's market forces, since these are determined to monetize all social platforms in the name of private profit. Well documented in empirical cases and media releases, this book reveals great research talent, critical balance, very good theorizing insight, and future vision.

Good discussion about today's media environment
By Jonathan Groves
Excellent compilation of case studies and thinking about how messages spread. The authors smartly mix approaches from economics, marketing, anthropology, sociology, psychology, and mass communication to help us understand why messages spread. The discussion of fan issues and participatory culture are especially illuminating.

It does to tend to focus on video examples and entertainment fan communities, however. As a journalist and mass-comm researcher, I would have appreciated more community-oriented examples (as Clay Shirky uses in "Here Comes Everybody"), but overall, it's a thought-provoking book about today's media environment. And I loved the e-book "extra" essays from other authors.

You cannot fail to be moved and humbled by this book
By D. Kelly
I wasn't sure what to expect at first from this book, after all we probably all watched the news on that fateful day.

It didn't come out quite as I expected, and I found it to be a much more personal and inward looking view of the life of this modest and extremely professional pilot, almost spiritual in some ways. It goes into some depth about his personal family life, sometime so much that you feel almost embarrassed to be reading such person thoughts and details.

There is a huge overriding theme of professionalism, love of flying and respect of the flying gods who decide ultimately who survives and who does not. I feel humbled by his modesty and openness and sometimes feared for the safety of his marriage given the amount of time spent away, but ultimately the amazing bond between Sully and his wife and children shone through, even in the toughest times which were actually after the accident. What I never expected from this book is that it really made me look inwards at my own relationship with own my wife and children and examine my own professional and private life, to see where I could be a better person.

Sully himself said that he doesn't consider himself to be a hero, and I have to say I agree, with the greatest of respect. He was thrown into a situation not of his own choosing, with no alternative, and no option to choose to do nothing. He had no choice but to bring all of his years of training and experience to bear to try and save his own skin and those he was responsible for that day. It is an automatic reaction and I am sure that any pilot would have tried just as hard. Not all would have made the right decision as to where to go, picked the right speeds or flap settings or even remained in control, which could have changed the outcome completely, but all would have been just as much a hero for trying. Sully is a consummate professional in his business, and I doff my cap to his abilities.

This is no self-indulgent book solely about Sully, in fact it is often self-deprecating as he reflects on his own weaknesses and limitations. He goes to great length to re-iterate that it was a team effort, so the rest of the members of the crew are not forgotten, and the support of his wife both before and after clearly contribute greatly to the making of the man.

If you read this you cannot fail to be moved and humbled and to think, "I want Sully on my next flight".

Ultimate "airport" book.
By Lance B. Hillsinger
Sully it the ultimate airport book. An airport book is something that is easy to read in the not-so-ideal locations of an airport lounge or on a bumpy plane ride. Airport books need to be clearly written and easy-to-read, but not boring; after all flying and waiting to fly are boring enough already.
.
One might suspect, that as flight 1549 lasted less than five minutes, trying to “milk” those five minutes into a full-length book would result in a repetitive, tedious manuscript full of minutiae. While there is some minutiae, it is largely confined to the two appendices and not in the narrative proper.

In Sully, the book, there is the obligatory biography of the author himself. How he learned to fly, his career in the Air Force etc., but the biography is more than just about and is surprisingly personal. Besides intimate family details, the reader learns much about the airline industry, how flight 1549 touched the lives of those not even directly related to the flight, and, most importantly, important details of the flight that were missed or reportedly inaccurately by the media.

Sully was originally published under the title “Highest Duty.” It was renamed (presumably) to help market the movie “Sully.” While the new title is more accurate, had “Sully” been used as the original title it would have been perceived as self-serving and Captain Sully is better than that.

I picked this book at the airport and finished before I landed. I had a smooth, on-time flight; may you have a similar experience.

Much more than just a safe landing
By R. Roderick Rowe
This biography of a singular event in the United States consciousness doesn't just tell of the event on that fateful day. Much more importantly, it delves into a lifetime of details that all contributed to the successful outcome. Sully doesn't mince words when it comes to sharing things that should have been set up differently by his employer. When they put materially deficient products into the cockpit, Sully tells us what the cost in convenience, confusion and time wasted as a result was. He tells of the many doubts he experienced after the safe landing. He tells about how his experience in landing safely catalyzed people around him, people who he never met, people who found new hope in an amazingly successful result when the most likely outcome should have been disastrous. The only thing that seemed 'off' was the sheer volume of content that seemed unrelated to the story and the outcome. This book is well worth the time to read. Inspirational would be the one word descriptor.

Motherhood: A Transformation

Once upon a time I was a nurse, a writer and a wife. Then one day, I had a child. I became a mother.

Added to the list of things I previously was, I became a chauffeur, a cook, a dresser, a wiper of dirty faces, a cleaner of soiled diapers, a retriever of thrown socks, a finder of lost shoes, a doer of homework, an insomniac. I was a referee in toy wars, a slayer of nighttime dragons, a soother of nervous school jitters. I was a room mother, a den mother, a leader of Girl Scouts and one day, mother of the bride. I calmed tantrums and bolstered fragile egos.

With each passing day my talents grew: I became a baker of cookies, a sewer of Halloween costumes extraordinaire.

I could braid hair in the time most people wash their faces. And I could smile even when I didn't want to.

Where once my body had been my own to do with as I pleased, it now belonged to someone else. It became a breast to nourish at, a shoulder to cry on, a lap to sit and cuddle upon. My lips became the kissers of boo-boos, my hips the transporters of small, squirmy bundles. My feet were now used to walk the floor at all hours of the night, my arms became a cradle. I grew eyes in the back of my head, and my hearing became supersonic.

Once upon a time my name was Peggy. Then I became a mother and had as many aliases as a con man. I became—at various times—Mm, Ma-ma, Ma, Mommie, Mom, Mother, MOTHER! And for a brief period of mental vexation, "Peg."

My mind, which used to flourish with egocentric thoughts, now became filled with irrational ideations: What if she falls out of the crib? What if he chokes on his food? What if I do or say the wrong thing? How will I know I'm a good parent? How will I know I'm a bad one?

My house, once so orderly and tidy, became a disorderly jumble of toys and stuffed animals, dried peas and empty, strewn formula bottles; a carpet of clutter and chaos; a dwelling of disarray.

My heart, once only given to another, was now taken from me and filled to the brim, bursting with devotion and love. I was a Mother. I was an icon. I’d done something no man had ever done, accomplished a feat so death defying and magical that many wouldn’t even attempt it. I became a Mother. And in so doing, I became all that I was, all that I ever wished to be.

Wonderful first book in a wonderful series
By Steven Sabin
I found this book somewhat by chance in my local library. It looked interesting...sort of like a modern version of Tom Sawyer, and that's exactly what it was. Boys in particular will love these books, because they chronicle the life of boys as it really exists - dirt, worms, clubhouses, alternately loving/hating girls, playing pranks, and just generally getting into and out of various and sundry mischief.

"Soup" is essentially an autobiographical account of author Robert Newton Peck's experiences growing up in rural Vermont in the 1920s. While he has no doubt greatly embellished these accounts to make them larger than life in these books, they are enormously fun and charming nonetheless. The young Peck (Rob in the stories) recounts life with his best pal "Soup", so named because he is embarrassed by his real name (Luther) and only comes running when his mother makes the dinner call of "Soup's On!" Hence, his nickname Soup became a permanent ID and also the namesake for this wonderful series of books. Soup is the mischievious ringleader in most of the misadventures, with Rob the younger and more naive sidekick.

My son loved these stories as I read them aloud to him. For road trips, we would find some books from the "Soup" series on tape and listen to those, and they invariably made the miles go faster.

As a parent, I loved the stories not only because they are hysterically funny, but because they are nostalgic and take me back to my own childhood when the pace of life was slower, things were simpler, and children were somehow less worldly wise, without the craving for 24/7 electronic stimulation. Sigh.

Peck imparts a wholesomeness to us in these books and my child never complained that the stories were sappy or lame. We both loved the recurring characters from book to book, such as the boys' teacher, and the portly Miss Bolund, the school nurse who shows up in her tiny, highly unreliable car at regular intervals. There's also the school bully - who happens to be a girl - and can whump just about any boy in the county.

Very occassionally (as in once or twice) there is content that some parents may find slightly objectionable - such as the boys experimenting with smoking or swearing. However, as a christian parent I never found any of these things problematic because the context was always quite clear that what the boys were doing was wrong and the book never comes across as condoning such behavior. It's more like the stories we've heard of kids who try smoking, only to end up turning green and vowing never to touch the foul things again. So, think in terms of Mark Twain...not something that tries to be "hip" by being PG-13, or going to the other extreme and bending over backwards to be politically correct and preachy.

In summary, I whole-heartedly recommend these books. There are a dozen or more in the series. They build on a fine tradition first given to us by Mark Twain in "Tom Sawyer" and "Huckleberry Finn," portraying boyhood the way it was and forever should be.

Soup is truly awesome!
By Rocky Mountain Reader Reviews
"Soup" is one of my all-time favorites! I've read my copy so many times that it's falling apart. This Christmas I bought copies of "Soup" for all of my nephews. I felt this story should be passed on to the next generation of readers.

Must have
By Lisa Marie
I remember being in elementary school and loving when it was story time because the teacher would always bring out one if these books. Now, I am a mother of my own children and knew they would enjoy them just as much as I did, and they do. They are 10 & 9 but I am still asked almost every night to read them a story out of one of these books. :0)
