In the Shadow of the Banyan: A Novel, by Vaddey Ratner

Told from the tender perspective of a young girl who comes of age amid the Cambodian killing fields, this searing first novel—based on the author’s personal story—has been hailed by Little Bee author Chris Cleave as “a masterpiece…utterly heartbreaking and impossibly beautiful.”

For seven-year-old Raami, the shattering end of childhood begins with the footsteps of her father returning home in the early dawn hours bringing details of the civil war that has overwhelmed the streets of Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital. Soon the family’s world of carefully guarded royal privilege is swept up in the chaos of revolution and forced exodus.

Over the next four years, as she endures the deaths of family members, starvation, and brutal forced labor, Raami clings to the only remaining vestige of childhood—the mythical legends and poems told to her by her father. In a climate of systematic violence where memory is sickness and justification for execution, Raami fights for her improbable survival. Displaying the author’s extraordinary gift for language, In the Shadow of the Banyan is testament to the transcendent power of narrative and a brilliantly wrought tale of human resilience.

A Wise and Beautifully Written Novel
By Walter Stanley
This is an excellent book if one wants to get some idea of what it was like to be one of the victims of the Khmer Rouge insanity in Cambodia. Vaddey Ratner is a skillful writer, who has an important experience to relate. It would be comforting to think that stories such as she tells would make it less likely for such atrocities to occur in the future. Unfortunately, history has demonstrated that such histories are incapable of teaching those who need to be taught. Pol Pot was educated in France, and presumably was aware of the Reign of Terror. And rather than learning from it, apparently thought it was a good idea and adopted it in his own country.

At least one person gave this book a poor review because it was written by a princess, one of the class who inherited their wealth, did nothing to improve the quality of life for their subjects, yet insisted upon being called “Highness.” Contrary to Ayn Rand, these are not the Atlases of society, but rather the sort of people that make irruptions of social chaos more-or-less inevitable. However, rich people aren’t usually evil, just complacent, and incapable of understanding that their wealth is a matter of privileged circumstances rather than something they have earned and deserve. However, this does not apply to Vaddey Ratner. She has her Grandmother Queen suggest that it was their karma, and her mother admit that “this Revolution was an old blaze reignited, possibly centuries of injustice manifesting itself like a raging inferno.” Social stratification makes a society ripe for the sociopathic element to emerge and stage a revolution. It takes very little sophistication to use a machine gun, and ruthless leaders can easily manipulate people by capitalizing upon their sense of social injustice. It is indeed odd that people are so easily manipulated by ignorant evil. Successful social revolutions need to be more like evolution than war, but this requires wisdom from the enlightened members of society.

Unfortunately, in present day Cambodia, very little has been learned. Workers are murdered when they strike for a living wage. Many of the most attractive young women, who have little chance at getting an education, turn to selling sex rather than submitting to the worse indignity of factory work.

Beautifully Written Story!
By Charlottekrn Bookfair
In the lyrical and poetic novel, Vaddey Ratner offers a glimpse of her life during the Khmer take over when she was all of five years old. As Raami in the novel, Vaddey Ratner is a descendant of Cambodian royalty, her father, (the deceased) Prince Sisowath Ayuravann.

On April 17, 1975, the Khmer Rouge, an army of ruthless thugs, entered Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, and put an end to life as Cambodians knew it. Declaring a new government, the revolutionaries killed government officials, government personnel, and others connected with the government. The black uniformed Khmers killed any civilian who opposed their dictates and in the process, set out their plan to relocate and re-educate the population under the communist dictatorship of Pol Pot.

Something Different - Beautiful, Insightful, Sad and Hopeful
By Gettysburg Girl
I think it's important to know the book is based on the real life of the author. She was five in 1975 when her family, along with all others in the cities of Cambodia, was ejected from their home and forced at gunpoint by the Khmer Rouge into a four year march back and forth across the countryside with only the possessions they could carry. It was a mass exodus and migration of people going nowhere. These people, including the young children, were used as slave labor by the Revolutionaries, starved, often separated from family members, beaten, sometimes arbitrarily executed.

That being said, I didn't find the novel to be maudlin. Some people said it brought them to tears. That was not the case for me and I'm normally pretty weepy. I found Vaddey Ratner to be an exceptional writer. Her writing is a combination of beautiful prose interspersed with events that were horrible and tragic but Ratner did not exploit the violence with graphic descriptions. I think because she didn't, I was able to absorb what little Raami (Vaddey) saw and felt without the complication of my own emotions. Don't shy away from reading this because you think it will be depressing. It is actually quite hopeful as written. Yes, people are randomly shot, Raami ate a lot of bugs and secretly nibbled raw rice as she was working, she watched executions, most of her family died - but she survives, and not entirely alone - I won't spoil it for you. The book is actually filled with tremendous love from beginning to end and is beautifully written. You should read it.

Becoming Animal: An Earthly Cosmology, by David Abram

David Abram’s first book, The Spell of the Sensuous has become a classic of environmental literature. Now he returns with a startling exploration of our human entanglement with the rest of nature.

As the climate veers toward catastrophe, the innumerable losses cascading through the biosphere make vividly evident the need for a metamorphosis in our relation to the living land. For too long we’ve ignored the wild intelligence of our bodies, taking our primary truths from technologies that hold the living world at a distance. Abram’s writing subverts this distance, drawing readers ever closer to their animal senses in order to explore, from within, the elemental kinship between the human body and the breathing Earth. The shape-shifting of ravens, the erotic nature of gravity, the eloquence of thunder, the pleasures of being edible: all have their place in this book.

Amazon.com Review
Richard Louv Reviews Becoming Animal

Richard Louv is the author of seven books, including Last Child in the Woods. He is the chairman of the Children & Nature Network, and has served as adviser to the Ford Foundation's Leadership for a Changing World award program and the National Scientific Council on the Developing Child. Read his review of Becoming Animal:

David Abram is unique among interpreters of the wild voice within us. His first book, The Spell of the Sensuous, has become a touchstone for a needed shift in our thinking about the place of humans in the world. As the poet Gary Snyder remarked, that book helped map us back into the world. In his new book, Becoming Animal, Abram offers a startling new exploration of our entanglement with the rest of nature. This time, his focus is the intimate but sadly forgotten relationship between our bodies and the earth. By excavating the most ordinary and familiar of our experiences--the perception of shadow, the recognition of depth, the transience of mood--he re-opens for us the knowing that our bodies are intertwined with the flesh of the earth. I cannot imagine another book that so gently and so persuasively alters how we look at ourselves, and reminds us that sentience was never our private possession, that our very awareness is a means of participating in a more than human world. At no other time in Western history have we needed to listen to the wild voice within us, and to Dave Abram's, as much as we do today.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* How did our curious, inventive species go from worshiping nature to destroying it? A creative and visionary ecologist and philosopher, Abram addressed this complex and urgent question in his influential first book, Spell of the Sensuous (1996). In his second provocative, boldly recalibrating blend of stories, reflections, and discoveries, he offers perception-heightening insights into the causes of our disparagement of “sensuous reality,” or “bodied existence,” and the disastrous consequences of our increasing detachment from the living world as we funnel our attention to the cyber realm. As Abram identifies underappreciated aspects of our minds and bodies that evolved to enable us to respond with exquisite sensitivity to our surroundings, he tells extraordinary tales of his encounters with wildlife from whales to ravens, illuminates the planet’s myriad forms of sentient life, and elucidates the significance of oral culture. In addition to writing with poetic precision about sensory experience—his analysis of shadows and life’s reciprocity are phenomenal feats of observation and eloquence—he also draws on his adventures as an itinerant sleight-of-hand magician and apprentice to indigenous shamans to forge an inspirited physics of being. We can’t “restore” nature, Abram writes, without “restorying” life, hence his prodigious, transfixing, and rectifying “earthly cosmology.” --Donna Seaman

Review

“A wild book in every sense of the word, full of stories that will leave you trembling, but even fuller of ideas that will send you out into the world with new eyes.” —Bill McKibben, author of Eaarth

“This book is like a prehistoric cave. If you have the nerve to enter it and you get used to the dark, you’ll discover things about storytelling which are startling, urgent and deeply true. Things each of us once knew, but forgot when we were born into the 19th and 20th centuries. Extraordinary rediscoveries!” —John Berger, author of Ways of Seeing and Why Look at Animals

“I cannot imagine another book that so gently and so persuasively alters how we look at ourselves.” —Richard Louv, author of The Nature Principle

“One of the most compelling and important ecology books in decades.” —Rex Weyler, co-founder of Greenpeace International

“A truly alchemical book. . . . Those of us who still hope for a revolutionary change in our thinking toward animals, the living land and the climate will welcome this book. Abram is an audacious thinker, a true visionary, and, really, just a damn good nature writer.” —San Francisco Book Review

“An intricately textured, deep breath of a book that blurs the boundaries between human and animal, mind and earth. Prose as lush as a moss-draped rain forest and as luminous as a high desert night. . . Deeply resonant with indigenous ways of knowing, Abram lets us listen in on wordless conversations with ancient boulders, walruses,
birds, and roof beams. His profound recognition of intelligences other than our own enables us to enter into reciprocal symbioses that can, in turn, sustain the world. Becoming Animal illuminates a way forward in restoring relationship with the earth, led by our vibrant animal bodies to re-inhabit the glittering world." —Orion

“A stunning, compelling journey into embodied, earthly intelligence, Becoming Animal is philosophy at its engaging best. Prepare for a wild, profound ride into the essence of the human animal—an essence embedded in communion with the Earth. A must read for anyone concerned about the future of the planet and ourselves.” —Kierán Suckling, co-founder and Executive Director, Center for Biological Diversity

“In Becoming Animal, David Abram has crafted the rarest of literary gems: a sublime effort combining transcendent prose, lucid insight, and lasting consequence.” —Shambhala Sun

“If we are to survive—indeed, if we are to stop the dominant culture from killing the planet—it will be in great measure because of brave and brilliant beings like David Abram. This is a beautifully written, deeply moving, and important book.” —Derrick Jensen, author of A Language Older Than Words and Endgame

Becoming Animal brings us home to ourselves as living organs of this wild planet. Its teachings leap off the page and translate immediately into lived experience. —Joanna Macy, Buddhist scholar and activist

“Without doubt one of America’s greatest nature writers, one who ably follows in the footsteps of Muir, Thoreau and Leopold. . . .[A] book of such transformative potential that it needs to be read twice in quick succession to get the full benefit. . . . The language is luminous, the style hypnotic. Abram weaves a spell that brings the world alive.”
—Resurgence

“Pure enthusiasm drives Abram to explore the yearning of our body for the larger body of Earth. . . . [Abram] brings the magician’s sense of mystery and playful surprise. . . His celebratory embrace of all that surrounds him is refreshing in the extreme.”
—Kirkus Reviews

“As with many deeply original—and radical—books, this work may startle, even provoke the reader in its electric reversal of conventional thought. . . . [T]his is a portrait of the artist as a young raven, arguing, with all the subtlety of his mind, for the mindedness of the body. An exercise of uncanny imagination.” —Jay Griffiths, author of Wild

“This brave and magical book summons wild wonder to remind us who we are.”
—Amory B. Lovins, Chief Scientist, Rocky Mountain Institute

“Speculative, learned, and always ‘lucid and precise’ as the eye of the vulture that confronted him once on a cliff ledge, Abram has one of those rare minds which, like the mind of a musician or a great mathematician, fuses dreaminess with smarts.” —The Village Voice

“Refreshing. [Abram] allows himself to be expansive, sentimental, and more than a little mad. . . . His book is transformative, animated by piercing observations and hallucinatory intensity.” —Bookforum

“This startling, sparkling book challenges the technological temper of our times by returning us to the animal body in ourselves. Abram shows brilliantly how this body brings us back to Earth in a series of acutely moving descriptions of its polysensory genius. An original work of primary philosophy, it is written with verve, passion, and poetry.” —Edward S. Casey, author of The Fate of Place: A Philosophical History

It is a mistake to read it as though searching for a point or to easily gain specific ideas
By Orange_Persimmon
To me, this is a book of poetry in prose form. It is a mistake to read it as though searching for a point or to easily gain specific ideas. I am not always or often in that mood. It is not a book to sit and read through like a novel or a history book. The value in this book is that it is a sensual dream. Americans, Western peoples at this time are not used to such things. Perhaps it would nourish our souls if we would spend some time with such a book. Take it in, a little at a time, like a refreshing, iced fruit drink on a lazy summer afternoon. Fall asleep reading one section each night.
This book puts me into a meditative, altered state. Which is a nice place to be.

Almost Perfect
By Eric Gross
First let me come out and say, I really loved David Abrams book Becoming Animal. I loved how eloquently it argued against philosophies of transcendence which are such an important part of most organized western religions, I loved how David described and conjured up the mystery of the natural world, and perhaps most of all I loved how he reminded us, so powerfully, of the innately expressive and conscious filled the natural world truly is. Many of his descriptions of this world reminded me of my own time studying with Navajo healers.
So why not five stars? I wish I could give it 4.5 stars.
As I said in the title of this review, Becoming Animal is almost perfect. It also has several not to trivial problems.
One, Abram rails against those who criticize writers who romanticize the hunter/gatherer - indigenous cultures of the world and of the past. He points out, in a lengthy footnote, how those same critics tend to romanticize the worlds of ancient Greece and Rome, yet shower contempt on those who write favorably about indigenous cultures. And I could not agree more strongly. Yet, Abram does romanticize these worlds. As beautifully as he extols their power and their connection with earth-based life, he totally ignores their own internal pressures to conform, as well as their often savage cruelty they visit upon their neighbors. In the book Radical Hope: Ethics in the Face of Cultural Devastation, Jonathan Lear deftly describes the unceasing violence visited upon the Crow Nation by their traditional and more powerful enemy the Lakota. And this is one of countless stories of cultures dedicated to frequent violence and mindless animosity (not that are free of these very same vicissitudes). Often the reticence of these societies to innovate is a consequence of internal pressures to conform. Such stressors to internally conform in these societies often become unbreakable obstacles to innovation.
One of the core themes of Becoming Animal is the rootedness these traditional societies have with the Earth on which they live. But many of these same societies lack this rootedness, including several Abram mentions. The life on the high plains of such tribes as the Cheyenne and Lakota were very recent phenomena made possible by the acquisition of the horse, introduced into the Americas by the Spanish. Life on the high plains began with these tribes at around the same time it began with the European invaders. Many of these tribal groups are highly nomadic. The Navajo entered the 4 Corners region of the US around 1450 after a long migration from Arctic Canada beginning around 1300. They arrived in the Southwest not so long before the Spanish entered that same region. Thus the argument for ageless rootedness often falls apart. And these are just several of hundreds of possible examples.
Toward the end of the book, Abram unfortunately unleashes an attack on evolutionary theory by setting up a straw man hypothesis based on his projection that the science of evolution is too mechanistic and unwelcome to the complex web of inter-communication that he observes in the natural world. But such mechanistic models are exactly what modern science has, itself, rebuked. While the statistical incidence of mutation is random, how these random changes manifest and evolve in the complex eco-systems of the planet are entirely a consequence of the very same, rich and complex layers of inter-communication described and extolled so lovingly by Abram. Her really fails to get his critique right and the book suffers as a result.
Finally, his criticisms of the cartesian world are uncompelling. The world he correctly criticizes is, itself, a consequence of cultural and historical memes that go far deeper in the human story than what Abram describes. More compelling and evidence based critiques are raised by Morris Berman (see: Wandering God and my own writings, Liberation from the Lie. The emergence of mechanistic, soulless models was rooted in far deeper human cultural soil than what Abram presents in this book. I recommend each of these books for a more sweeping and compelling accounts for the degradation of the planets and social/individual life that resulted from the abandonment of the earthcentric life that forms the centerpiece of this book.
Abram is fantastic as a writer of narrative and some of my favorite passages are taken, directly, from his own life. I really loved his description of his kayaking off the coast of Alaska and encountering a colony of sea lions and how he responded to their sudden appearance with such brilliant and connected expression,. The personal quality of this book is really terrific.
But sometimes his use of language becomes too labored and flowery. Sometimes, it sounded strained, like he was working too hard to convince the reader of how smart and sensitive he is.
Nonetheless, this is an extremely valuable book and I really admire Abram for his originality, the challenge of the subject matter, and the power of this critically important message. This is a book that we need to read and absorb.

'Every blade of grass has a beautiful soul'...
By D. Drozda
Rarely do I finish a book and turn to the beginning to start all over again...Becoming Animal is a poetic adventure into the roots of our being-ness ...I have a love for and an affinity with the natural world however I had not considered the life of shadows or the consciousness of mountains or the countless ways in which David Abram helped to open my senses to the teeming nature of nature all around me. I am grateful for being able to give pause to savor passages like: "We give ourselves precious little chance to taste this nourishment that springs up into us whenever we touch the ground, and so it's hardly surprising that we've forgotten the erotic nature of gravity, and the enlivening pleasure of earthly contact." or this: ..."each stone, each gust of wind, each termite-ridden log or gliding sea turtle harbors and bodies forth a creativity that resists all definition."

Must read book for any working professional.
By CKJ
Anyone working professional that is in a company big enough to have seperate job functions (or departments, if you like) can benefit tremendously from this book. It might as well be titled, "Unwritten Laws of Working with Other Adults to Accomplish Work and Achieve Personal Success". Of course, that might not fit so easily on such a small front cover.

I stumbled upon this book about 3 years into my first job as an engineer at a large corporation. Immediately I wished I had found it the day I first started. All of the principles in this book are clear, concise, and make perfect sense to implement. I feel like my attitude towards what I'm being asked to do at work has improved tremendously, and I don't think it was bad to begin with. It's like I finally "get it", and I can spot my co-workers who still do not.

What do you do when you're being asked to work on something beneath your abilities?
What is the single greatest attribute of a new professional?
How do you handle being asked to do something by another department?
How do you handle enlisting another department to peform work for your projects? Or, how do you handle a project that affects another department's function or domain?

All of these questions are answered and more.

It seems amazing that a book written so long ago by some engineer in a different field, different company, and different job could hit the nail on the head so precisely. If someone had told me this book was written in present day by one of my co-workers, I would have believed them. I have since read this book once a year, because I firmly believe it is the key to success. I think it should be handed out to every college grad who will be going to work for others.

Excellent for Aspiring Engineers
By J. Barker
As a new engineering graduate, I found this book to be immensely helpful in the way that I tackle problems that face my company. I'd say the most important lesson that I learned from this book is to try to be pragmatic. In my industry, it is not always prudent to rely on the expertise / theory that you learn to develop during school, and this book discusses what separates "junior" engineers from the "senior" engineers. Since reading this book a few months ago and making a conscious effort to think like a senior engineer, I have been given more challenging projects and tasks that were not originally meant for myself. I can tell that this is definitely a jewel that I am going to keep. I even let a few engineering friends borrow it for their own careers.

The essential interpersonal skills book for the engineer
By Ron George
Inventor and engineer James Skakoon has done the profession of engineering a great service by delivering some immutable codes of the engineering profession. Somewhere in this book, the naked truth is mentioned - a number of empirical studies of on-the-job excellence have clearly and repeatedly established that communication, interpersonal skills etc play a larger role in superior job performance than just being a scholar in technical details. Yet, most of the university and school emphasis is precisely in the latter area.

This book bridges the gap by offering a glimpse at the "soft" skills', gathered from engineering experience. The rules are not wordy and there certainly are no page length case studies with each. But the short, clear statements will at least make you cognizant of these interpersonal relationships and personal codes when carrying out day to day engineering decisions at the office. The book is also well suited for executives, who often forget that it is important to deal with subordinates in the "right" manner, regardless of distinct management styles. When the going gets tough, yes you may have to be a headache to everyone in the office but there needs to be a line that you cannot cross.

I feel this is a golden book that must be used from time to time, not just read once and stuffed away in a drawer somewhere for dust to collect.
