Exploring After the End

I purchased this book for my daughter, Sarah. She wrote in it and underlined words and left it a rag tag mess. After she passed away in a car accident when she was 16, I loved flipping through the pages seeing her thoughts and observations.

Get your youngsters interested in the world around them with this book

I purchased two of these books for different children, and each is using the book in their own ways to learn about the world in which they live. Not a day goes by that one or the other doesn't discover, on their own, something else amazing about the environment they occupy. Want to get your child away from the video games? Off the cell phone for hours at a time? Offer this book as a gift, and watch their knowledge grow page by page as they themselves become to authors of their own experiences in learning. These books are truly amazing, and do not have to be limited to children. Many bored adults who could use an inspiration that life doesn't have to be mundane can benefit from the use of this book. I recommend it for all ages and a book for each family member. If each one has his own book, discussions can begin at any time with everyone participating on different discoveries while the book has given each person the same suggestion for an 'assignment.' Fun and informative gift for anyone for any occasion.

cool, if you ignore the garbage factor

The messy fonts kind of drive me nuts, but the content is inspiring and high quality. I'd be careful giving this book to a kid, since the author basically encourages you to pick up garbage off the street and bring it home. There could be some hazards and cleanliness issues there. I use it as an inspiration tool, since some of the quotes appeal to me or challenge me, and it does encourage you to open your eyes and see the world. It's cute, interesting, and clearly made with love.

In 1939 the Jewish population of Romania exceeded 750,000: the third largest concentration of Jews in Europe. By 1944, some 400,000 had disappeared. Another 150,000 Ukrainian Jews died at the hands of Romanian soldiers. In the quest for a final solution Romania proved to be Hitler's most enthusiastic ally.

In The Silent Holocaust, Butnaru, himself a survivor of the Romanian labor camps, provides a full account and demonstrates that anti-Semitism was a central force in Romania's history. He begins by examining the precarious status of Romanian Jewry in the years prior to World War I. He then reviews the period to the establishment in September, 1940, of the National Legionary State, a period when anti-Semitism became the unifying force in politics. The remainder of the book covers the Holocaust years, and reveals that Romania's premeditated mass murder of Jews was well underway before the Reich's gas chambers became operational. The Silent Holocaust has been called a work of epic and historical worth and it is invaluable for students of World War II, the Holocaust, and Jewish and Eastern European studies.

By reviewing historical and cultural biases against Jews and legislation that embodied anti-Semitism, Butnaru shows that government action to eliminate the Jews reflected the broadly held popular belief that Jews could be blamed for all troubles. Romania's early history and development are outlined, but the fascist legionary movement between the wars, German coalition, and leadership of Ion Antonescu during World War II are focal points. About the Author

I. C. BUTNARU was in a Romanian labor camp during World War II and lectures on the Holocaust and the arts at Boston University. He was a member of the Society of Romanian Writers. Forbidden to write freely on political issues in Communist Romania, he immigrated to the United States in 1974. He is the author of five earlier books.

Had never heard of this book before...

My daughter had to read this for school... so being the crazy parent who enjoys reading, I read it as well (because I read all the books my kids have to read). I really enjoyed it. Well written and descriptive it paints a detailed picture of the girls life from loved child, to orphan, to slave, woman and freedom. Worth the read. Not a long book.

This is a very thoughtful story linking colonialism, Christianity and slavery to patriarchy and marriage.. Freedom for women is actually denied within each of these institutions as women are always bought and sold.

About the Author
Joe Ammirati is professor of biology and teaches mycology and botany at the University of Washington. His research focuses mainly on the classification and evolutionary relationships of the gilled fungi, particularly in the genus Cortinarius, but also includes mushroom biogeography and co-evolution, mushroom toxicity, and fungal diversity of arctic/alpine, boreal, and subalpine habitats. Joe is the scientific advisor to the Puget Sound Mycological Society and Pacific Northwest Key Council.

Steve Trudell is affiliate curator in the Burke Museum Herbarium at the University of Washington. He belongs to the Mycological Society of America, North American Mycological Association, and International Mycorrhiza Society. He writes for several mycological publications and frequently serves as foray mycologist and lecturer for mycological societies.

Excellent book, but photos should be bigger

If you are like many serious mushroomers, your shelves of mushroom books are already overloaded. Every new mushroom book must be evaluated: "Is this book worthy of my collection?" Let's see.

At first inspection, it's clear that the book is printed on quality paper, with a durable binding, and with an attractive design. The preliminary sections include information on `What are Mushrooms?', `Guidelines for collecting', `Ecology', `Mycorrhizas', `Mushroom poisoning', and `Identification'. The end of the book has a very useful illustrated glossary and a section on types of mushroom poisoning.

As a field guide, the heart of the book is the descriptions and photographs of about 460 species of mushrooms and other fungi. Here, like most mushroom field guides, you will find the mushrooms grouped by macro-morphology and spore print color. There are keys to the 16 groups used by the authors, and keys to the genera in each group, but no keys to the species.

The descriptions are well written, as is the rest of the book. They are short, emphasizing important diagnostic characteristics and often include ecological and edibility information. Ideally, I would prefer to see more complete descriptions, but including longer descriptions in a book with this many species would have made a very large book and the authors had a page limit from their publisher. Ultimately I think their decision to include more species at the expense of longer descriptions was the right choice to make. In fact one of the principle strengths of this book is the large number of species included that you will not find in any other field guide. For example, there is no other North American field guide where you will find descriptions and photos of 25 species of Cortinarius!

The photographs, mostly by Steve Trudell, are excellent, far better than most field guides. The problem is they are presented much too small. Every mushroomer interested in buying this book would be willing to pay a bit more for a larger book with larger photographs. Obviously the publisher does not understand its audience for this book. It's a shame the photographs are not presented in the size that their quality demands. (The senior author told me that the editor had made a verbal promise for larger photographs, but that was ignored after the sale of the publisher and the change of the editor.)

The genera or groups of mushrooms are given a few introductory paragraphs. Relationships to other groups are discussed and the characteristics that unite the group are enunciated. This is very useful in giving the reader a perspective on the group being discussed. The names used for the fungi are up-to-date and significant synonyms are noted. Common names are only given for the few species where common names actually exist. Thankfully the all too common, and regrettable, practice of making up "common names" was not done here.

This volume definitely deserves space on your mushroom book shelf; it's a quality book that you will use often. If you are a mushroomer in the western United States, the book is an essential addition to your library.

Good but not quite all there ...

I recently purchased this book as an addition to my collecting library.

The plus side:

- Excellent photos of the fungi described.
- Regionally specific.
- Barely lightweight and compact enough to pass itself off as a 'field guide'.

The minus side:

- Inexplicably ignores popular species regularly collected like Lactarius rubidus ( Candy Cap) and Psilocybe semilanceata
( Liberty Cap ).
- Even though presented as a 'field guide' it omits sensory identification clues in many instances like smell, taste, texture with each species cited.
- Uses a paragraph style descriptive approach that isn't really helpful ( in my opinion ) in a 'field guide'. Compare to any D.Aurora title to understand what I mean.
- While providing general edibility information in some cases, fails to do so with each species cited.
- Does a poor job, in my opinion, of alerting collectors to potential 'look-alikes' both good and bad and the whole 'edible for some but not others' issue.
- The lack of common names, while not technically necessary, is also not helpful.
- At times reads like Timber Press had their legal department do the editing.

Personally, I collect to consume. While this title is helpful I can't consider it a 'field guide' and would be concerned about anyone using it alone without other, better references like "All the Rain Promises" or "Mushrooms Demystified" ( not a small book either ). That said I do not regret my purchase.

These books (vols. 1 and 2) explore the use of petroleum biomarkers. The knowledge therein will be useful for those planning to work on crude oil exploration and oil spill research. It's advisable to have some knowledge on organic geochemistry. Both books are well updated and of easy reading, giving the reader a good insight into the topic. They're a must read for all researchers and students in this field.

This is a hefty dose of Bradshaw on recovering from dysfunction. To be expected in such a long program, some of his favorite jokes and many of his favorite authors and theories come up repeatedly. Since the presentation is taped from live lectures, audience noises are clearly audible. The listener hears other groups doing an exercise at the same time, laughing, applause and sometimes sobbing. A word of caution, the work on "original pain" on tape two is an extremely intense recollection of abuse. Processing this with someone is recommended. Life-Changing Book!

This book is life-changing especially for those who have grown up in a dysfunctional "family" and were abused as children. Healing the inner or wounded child is the main key to beginning the healing and recovery process. Going through the grief work is extremely painful but a necessary part of loss and healing. Anger also must be dealt with in productive ways since anger and grief are two sides of the same coin. I also recommend "Toxic Parents" and "Mothers Who Can't Love" both by Dr. Susan Forward since it introduces a person to soothing or healing the wounded child that each of us were.

Journey Towards Authentic You

Are you really interested in helping yourself to become the REAL you? Are you committed to doing the work? Are you ready to face your "wounded" inner and leave the comfort of your false self? If you answer "yes" to any of these questions, get your notebook and pen ready to do your life work.

John Bradshaw's "Home Coming" takes you through the steps necessary to growing the inner you to match the person that you were born to be. This book includes exercises that may seem difficult at first, even scary at times. However, they do get easier during this walk towards the REAL you.

Just know that the journey to discovering your authentic self was not meant to be easy. However, finding your wonder child is well worth unlocking old wounds. John Bradshaw's "Home Coming" will assist you in your transition from arrested development to being the genuine adult that you were born to be.

Amazing World of Horses both original and midnight editions my favorites by Cindy but this book a nice follow up. Be warned there are a couple of ugly horses depicted, another that doesn't even have a tail and another with a nasty chain halter. Most serious fault is many of the horses have just an empty eye socket, no eye drawn! Don't know what the story is with that but very unattractive. Most though are nicely built, plenty of flowing manes and otherwise appealing. Hard to descern many different breeds most are generic either drafty, Iberian or araby, plus a mule and a cute pony. Much prettier inside than the cover drawing. Hopefully Cindy's next horse book will have her best efforts and leave out the equines with misshapen body conformation, blank eyes and pieces of tack. We want our horses Amazing, Wild and Enchanted!

For horse lovers.

I wanted horses, I got horses.
I do believe that this book is more for coloring pencils than gel pens as there are many huge horses and large spaces to fill. One can always do both as I did in the second picture. However, there are some where the horses are filled with designs that could be drawn with gel pens more easily.
I knocked out a star because of those designs. I know there is just so many you can draw on a horse, but it feels like it's always the same ones from a horse to the other, or outside in the surroundings.
Overall, this book is perfect for horse lovers. (My favorite ones are the Pegasus. I'm so afraid to mess them up that I haven't touched them yet, but they look awesome!)

I didn't particularly like though, so I haven't colored anything. I found the illustrations lacking personality. A few of the drawing are quite nice but the majority seem generic drawings to sell coloring books. The paper is not good, so be aware that you will not be able to use markers; or, you could make copies on cardstock paper.

His photographs have been published in every major national magazine that uses nature photographs including NATIONAL WILDLIFE, SIERRA, NATURAL HISTORY, PETERSEN'S PHOTOGRAPHIC, RANGER RICK, BIRDER'S WORLD, MICHIGAN NATURAL RESOURCES, and AUDUBON. OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHER and POPULAR PHOTOGRAPHY have published his instructional articles about nature photography on several occasions. His nature photos are showcased in calendars produced by Hallmark, Kodak, Sierra Club, Argus, Browntrout, Abbeville Press, and many others. This book sets the standard for digital landscape photography. The serious reader will learn three fundamental concepts that will vastly improve his or her images. The first is the use of the RGB histogram, requiring the photographer to move the color channel that is farthest to the right without clipping. This technique produces perfectly exposed highlights and avoids potentially serious problems caused by working with the camera's large luminous histogram.

The second technique is back-button focusing, a term coined by the Gerlachs and a technique which they have used for years. This technique enables the photographer working on a tripod to focus on an important subject in the frame, recompose the image, and take the shot without losing the original focus. This technique will be of enormous benefit for obtaining sharp focus on the critical element in the frame.

The third technique is using manual exposure, which avoids, among other things, the problem caused by light coming through the viewfinder and thereby altering the camera's meter and causing underexposure. Manual exposure is a foolproof method for avoiding this problem and is to be preferred to autoexposure in most circumstances.

There is a great deal more in the book than the three techniques mentioned above, and the book is rich in additional information for the digital landscape photographer. However, I believe that adopting these three techniques alone will produce an enormous improvement in one's landscape photography. The Gerlachs are to be congratulated for producing such an important book that I believe will become a classic in photography.

Beauteous and Educational

As someone who dabbled in all kinds of photography back in the day (SLR and film), this book was an absolute joy. I have projects coming up that require "good" photography, and since I'm not exactly rolling in dough, I knew I'd have to dust off my old photography skills. While I've been having a great time with digital point-and-shoots, I missed the SLR flexibility. I want a DSLR, but didn't know where to begin. And an SLR level camera is crucial to my plans.

This book is not only a fount of great information for digital photography, it is also valuable in deciding what brands of camera to consider, and why.

While I haven't yet applied the lessons learned in the reading of this book, it is a great resource for anyone who is considering landscape photography ... or photography, period, for that matter!

wonderful book - cheap print

The book is wonderful, the two authors spend most of their time discussing how to take excellent images in the field, rather than wasting too much time on hardware (one chapter) or digital post-processing (two chapters dealing with HDR and panoramas).
The rest deals with exposure, how to obtain sharp images, light conditions, composition etc. I like the author's style, stating their preferences where they think they matter and discussing the options where the personal needs or preferences of the individual photographer have to be considered. The book is illustrated with many superb images throughout.
What is not superb, however, is the overall print quality. On many pages the text is either faded or has a bluish tinge, making reading in low light difficult. That detracts from an otherwise excellent book.

Still an excellent purchase - one of my favorite books right now.
