Very comprehensive, excellent home study program/aid

This book is fantastic. I already had experience doing Vinyasa yoga classes, but couldn't keep going to the studio. A lot of yoga books are hard to actually follow and they only teach you poses, not sequences. This book not only gives you 27 different sequences to follow, but it breaks them up into a sort of training course you can follow with increasing difficulty. It also includes a lot of modifications for poses in case you can't do the full pose for whatever reason, and that's another thing I hadn't found in other yoga books. I definitely need modifications & supports for certain poses & this book showed me how to do them until I could reach the full pose. A third bonus is the section on "Yoga Therapy" with poses given for numerous common ailments, like headache, backache, anxiety, etc. Of course, it's not a total replacement for a class/teacher, but this book is really excellent and will definitely help anyone with their practice. Maybe the only sort-of downside is that I ended up buying a lot of equipment to be able to do all the poses in the sequences--bolsters, a strap, a block--which can get pricey? But having those thing has definitely helped me deepen my practice, so no regrets.

Ummmm, I almost cannot fathom how the depths of my love for my Critters could be any deeper than I've always felt about them, but I was WRONG! In a few short hours of reading Mr Cameron's 'A Dog's Purpose' I have realized that as a Disabled American Veteran who struggles with PTSD how they have saved my life & continue to save my life on a daily basis with their unconditional warmth, love, loyalty & compassion! They give their ALL to us in everything they do & ask for so very little in return. They are God's Greatest gift to us Humans here on Earth & Im so glad that this Wonderful Book reminded me of that.

This is a Definite 'Must Read' book for the entire Human Race! To go along and experience Toby, Baily, Ellie & Buddy's Purpose in life might not only help us appreciate our loyal animal companions more, but each other as well!

An absolute MUST book for anyone that has lost a pet

Definately a MUST have book for anyone that has lost a pet. The story is told first person by the dog - it is absolutely brilliant; the dog lives several lives and you will find yourself remembering your special companion in each chapter of this dogs life. You will laugh and you will cry - and you will find some comfort for your recent loss. It truely help my broken heart when I has recently lost my miniature schnauzer at 14 years 39 days young - she had been with me since she was 8 weeks old.

Thank you to Bruce Cameron for your brilliant mind to write such a heartwarming book for us pet lovers - once again, your book helped me through the most difficult time I have had in my life - I read it in one day.

One of the Best!

This book was GREAT from cover to cover! I love reading about Marty's family and her birthday, her anxious preparing to leave their only place she ever lived as an adult (picking out clothes, trying to be up to the latest fashions for the trip, etc)...I loved their trip out there (that second hotel...I could just picture it in my mind!)...Then the sweet reunion, Missy catching up on the family events...Clark and the rescue and then the accident...Oh, and the whole ordeal that followed after that had me crying! Janette did such a WONDERFUL job describing the entire ordeal. You could just picture the whole thing as it played out. I felt the pain of Marty and Missy and Clark. I cried with them and I rejoiced later in the story. Clark's faith and love for his family was indeed wonderful. If EVER there was a book a person facing a tragedy should read, it's this one. Clark proved that the mind is much more powerful than the body, and I'm so glad he was still able to carry bags for his wife, help her onto and off of the train, stage...Be the man of the house and work and toil for his family...Those little things mentioned in the story really added a lot to it in my opinion. I cannot say ENOUGH about this book! It was absolutely WONDERFUL!!!!!! Can't wait to read the next.

Wonderful book

Marty and Clark went west to visit with Missie and her family. Clark had accident while saving two boys. Which extended their visit west for a whole year. In which time their came a lost doctor back to his practice while saving Clark from his injury and then Clark became a spiritual leader for the that part of west and they built a church for the community and he finally past the torch to Henry and Marty and Clark went back to their home farm a very goo read. I enjoyed it very much hope you'll enjoy it too.

Decent book

I would of given this book five stars if weren't for the huge change in Marty, Clark, and Missy from the previous books. While Janette Oke is one of my favorite authors, this book was very fire and brimstone must same your soul. While in the previous books the Davis family was very forward with their faith, they weren't trying to convert every person they met. The Marty and Clark from the previous books wouldn't of tried to convert Jedd and every person they meet like they did in this book.
While this book is good and continues the story of the Davis family, it lacks the love and subtlety of the previous books. The hit you over the head religion style takes away from the story in a big way.
I do look forward to reading the last four books in the series. And continuing to see how the movies differ.

Kate DiCamillo's first novel Because of Winn-Dixie won a Newbery Honor in 2000 for the no-nonsense charm and wisdom of its down-home young heroine, Opal. Also set in Florida, The Tiger Rising is more of a short story in scope, the tale of 12-year-old Rob Horton who finds a caged tiger in the woods behind the Kentucky Star Motel where he lives with his dad. The tiger is so incongruous in this setting, Rob views the apparition as some sort of magic trick. Indeed, the tiger triggers all sorts of magic in Rob's life--for one thing, it takes his mind off his recently deceased mother and the itchy red blisters on his legs that the wise motel housekeeper, Willie May, says is a manifestation of the sadness that Rob keeps "down low."

Something else for Rob to think about is Sistine (as in the chapel), a new city girl with fierce black eyes who challenges him to be honest with her and himself. Spurred by the tiger, events collide to break Rob out of his silent introspection, to form a new friendship with Sistine, a new understanding with his father, and most important, to lighten his heart. Gr 4-6-A multifaceted story with characters who will tug at readers' hearts. Rob and his father moved to Lister, FL, to try to begin life anew without Rob's mother, who recently died from cancer. The boy goes through his days like a sleepwalker, with little or no visible emotion. "He made all his feelings go inside the suitcase; he stuffed them in tight and then sat on the suitcase and locked it shut." His sadness permeates the story; even the weather, with its constant dreary drizzle is sad. With the arrival of a new student, Sistine Bailey, Rob's self-contained world begins to crumble. He and Sistine are both friendless and victims of the cruelty often shown outsiders at school. The principal, worried about contagion, decides that Rob should remain at home until the rash on his legs improves. Rob appreciates the respite and Sistine appears daily on the pretense of bringing him his homework. She seems to have the keys to unlock the suitcase on Rob's "not-wishes and not-thoughts." When the boy finds a caged tiger in the woods, he recognizes a similarity between himself and the animal. Then the sleazy owner of the motel where Rob and his dad are living gives him the responsibility of feeding the creature, and Rob realizes he finally holds in his hands the keys to freedom. Quotes from William Blake's "The Tiger" intimate themselves into the narrative and set the tone. This slender story is lush with haunting characters and spare descriptions, conjuring up vivid images. The following eight book reviews were written by a group of fourth grade students who recently read Kate diCamillo’s The Tiger Rising. Enjoy their honest opinions after reading and studying the novel.

1.
The Tiger Rising is a book about friendship, growth, and trust. The story contains two unemotional misfits with problems in their social lives that end up meeting and overcoming their problems. They end up finding a tiger who brings them together on their journey to help free the tiger.
If you want to get the most out of the book then I recommend paying attention to small details. If you do you will better understand the book and I guarantee you will enjoy it more. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
Rob [one of the two main characters] lives in a hotel in Florida with his dad. His mom died of cancer when he was little. Rob is an outcast at his school. He has a rash on his legs and has to stay home from school. So, he has to work at the hotel where he lives. He is afraid to let out his emotions because his past and present were rough.
Sistine [the second main character] just recently moved to Florida from Pennsylvania. Her parents got divorced and she lives with her mom. She secretly hopes her dad will come and get her. She hides her emotions about her parents divorce and her tough life. She lets it out by getting in fights at school.
Rob and Sistine meet and become good friends. They help each other learn to express their emotions and not keep it all in. They bond through their journey to free a tiger. During their journey, they realize how similar they are and how well they can overcome anything in their way.
In conclusion, the Tiger Rising is an amazing book that teaches many lessons. It shows friendship, hard work, growth, trust, and how two people overcame their difficult past.

But one day he encounters a lonely tiger sitting in the middle of a cage, he knows there’s something wrong with the scene. He meets a girl named Sistine who is having problems too.They then go on insane adventures.
This is a dynamite book for all ages.Especially for 9-12 year olds. This book is about friendship,rough times,and a little bit of mystery.Even if you’re not into that “type” you will still like it, without a doubt.It is a relatively small book, it has 30 chapters but the chapters are small.I loved this book, and I will tell you why.It is so packedful of thrilling excitment. Every time you put the book down you want to pick it up and read more. Every character is different. But you can’t really pick who your favorite is because they're all so fascinating. I loved this book and I know you will too.

I think that The Tiger Rising is a great book because it has a lot of detail in it. Kate Dicamillo is a phenomenal author that knows and is very experienced in mixing despair and hope. She writes a tale of sadness and friendship. In the book, a boy named Rob Horton was wandering in the woods and found a tiger. A real tiger. Then at school he finds a girl that is in need of friendship. He has a incurable rash on his legs and because of it he gets bullied in school and is sent out of the school by the principal. Rob has a suitcase of thoughts and never thinks about anything, except for the tiger and Sistine. Will that change? Sistine can’t control her anger. Will that change? So in the end, I’ll give this book a 5 star rating.

The Tiger Rising was a pretty good book. It's about a boy named Rob Horton who doesn't have many friends at school and is very quiet. Robs mom just died so he moved to a motel in florida so they could stop thinking about her where they used to live. Later on in the book rob meets a girl named Sistine Bailey. Sistine had just came down to florida with her mom and is waiting for her dad to come and bring her back to where she really likes, the north. Sistine is a very unique girl, she wears weird clothes and hates almost everybody. The Tiger Rising was a very nice book but made you feel very sad at some points in the story. It was still a very well written and amazing book. I would DEFINITELY recommend this book to a friend or anybody really. I would give this book a five out of five stars for some of these reasons. This book was very nice because it had so much detail and i can see that the writer put lots of effort into it. I liked how the writer made every character so unique and nobody was either alike or just an Average Joe. And the last reason why I liked this book is because of the way they made things at certain times, like since this book is supposed to be sad I thought it was smart to always make it cloudy. And those are the reasons why I LOVED this book.

I think that Tiger Rising is an awesome book! Even though it was a little slow to start the rest of the book was very interesting. As you get farther and farther into the book you start to get pulled into the story and it is hard to put the book down. Overall I think it is a great book to read.
Tiger Rising contains a lot of feelings and emotions. Some of the emotions in the book are loneliness, anger and fear. Rob the main character was lonely because his mom died and his dad wanted him to stop being sad about her death. Sistine another main character was angry because her parents divorced and she was always mad at the world. At the end of the book, Rob was afraid to let the tiger out because he is worried the tiger would eat him but I think it also has to do with being afraid to let his feelings out.
After you read this book, you will be so happy you did! It is a fun book to read and it teaches you a lot about feelings and emotions.

If I were recommending this book to a person, I would say that it was a sad book with an awful ending. Some people say that it has happiness and friendship, I disagree. If the book was about friendship, wouldn’t there be at least three or four friendchips? Yes, but this book only has one. They also say it is about happiness. To me this is a joke and a lie. Throughout the story, it is mostly crying, mangling people, and many other awful things that I don’t even want to mention, like when that kid in Rob’s class tripped him and called him a retard. To those who don’t what a retard is, I’m just saying that it is a horrific and rude thing to say. I also heard that this is a book for all ages, and I also am very startled that writing like that should be in a children’s book. I liked The Tale Of Despereaux, and I want to read Flora and Ulysses, but this book really surprises me. I would give this book a one out five stars, because I think this is an awful book for children.

In my mind The Tiger Rising is an amazing book about a boy named Rob Horton.His mother dies so he has to move to Jacksonville Kentucky he lives at the kentucky star motel with his dad. Rob has no friends and one day when he was getting on the bus he saw a tiger locked in a cage with blood around its face. Then he meets a girl named Sistine. He gained a friendship with her. This book is extremely sad but very interesting. I was very mad when my teacher told us that we had to take a break from the book and left us on a cliffhanger. I think this book deserves a 5 star rating for how amazingly written it is. This book is sad but very interesting. I recommend this book for ajes 9 and older i would not recommend this for a second grader because it is sad and they would not understand the book. But this book was one of the best and most well written books i've ever red. There are also a lot of bumps in the story with Rob and Sistine.

The Tiger Rising is a book about a boy named Rob, who holds a lot of his sad feelings inside of him because his mother died and his dad will not let him talk about her or be sad. He has recently moved to a new town that he does not like and has a hard time fitting in with the other kids or even his teacher at school. Rob eventually meets a new girl named Sistine. Sistine has problems of her own and does not like her new town either. She wants to move back to Philadelphia and wants her dad to come and get her.
Rob finds a tiger locked in a cage and when he becomes friends with Sistine, he finally shows her the tiger. They both know how the tiger feels being locked up because they are sort of feeling the same way in their own lives. Eventually, Rob is hired to feed the tiger by a man named Beauchamp. Beauchamp is not a nice man and doesn't even care about the tiger. Sistine is always trying to talk Rob into letting the tiger go.
Sometimes trying to figure out how Rob and Sistine were feeling by understanding the tiger was confusing. It was nice to see how Rob and Sistine were able to make each other feel better and be able to talk to each other. In the end, Rob has a fight with his dad until they can both talk about how much they miss Rob's mother and Sistine knows that her dad really isn't coming back for her.
I think that it is kind of a sad book but a good book and I would recommend reading it.

I would have it in my classroom library and recommend it to all of my students

As I was reading this book, I thought how well-written it is and interesting. In fact, it help my interest enough so that I read it in two sittings. Unfortunately, I was reading about three YA novels at the time and found it difficult to recall the content. I looked back and remembered that it was about children who are fighting emotional battles and find healing through friendships with peers and even exotic animals. Yes, there is a real tiger in the story. I would have it in my classroom library and recommend it to all of my students. It is about sixth grade or below reading level.

The Tiger Rising- MUST READ

The Tiger Rising is a very well written book. Kate DiCamillo is one of my favorite authors and this book did not disappoint. It is a book that my students and I could not get enough of. Each day at the end of our read aloud time, my students would beg for just one more chapter, or one more page, or one more paragraph, or one more sentence, or one more word! We enjoyed this book because there is so much symbolism and so many problems that young children can connect to throughout the entire book.

I highly recommend reading this book with a group of children because it allows for a lot of discussion about character traits, motivations, struggles, symbolism, and theme.

Victor Mancini is a ruthless con artist. Victor Mancini is a med-school dropout who's taken a job playing an Irish indentured servant in a colonial-era theme park in order to help care for his Alzheimer's-afflicted mother. Victor Mancini is a sex addict. Victor Mancini is a direct descendant of Jesus Christ. All of these statements about the protagonist of Choke are more or less true. Welcome, once again, to the world of Chuck Palahniuk.

"Art never comes from happiness." So says Mancini's mother only a few pages into the novel. Given her own dicey and melodramatic style of parenting, you would think that her son's life would be chock-full of nothing but art. Alas, that's not the case. In the fine tradition of Oedipus, Stephen Dedalus, and Anthony Soprano, Victor hasn't quite reconciled his issues with his mother. Instead, he's trawling sexual-addiction recovery meetings for dates and purposely choking in restaurants for a few moments of attention. Longing for a hug, in other words, he's settling for the Heimlich.

Thematically, this is pretty familiar Palahniuk territory. It would be a pity to disclose the surprises of the plot, but suffice it to say that what we have here is a little bit of Tom Robbins's Another Roadside Attraction, a little bit of Don DeLillo's The Day Room, and, well, a little bit of Fight Club. Just as with Fight Club and the other two novels under Palahniuk's belt, we get a smattering of gloriously unflinching sound bites, including this skeptical bit on prayer chains: "A spiritual pyramid scheme. As if you can gang up on God. Bully him around."

Whether this is the novel that will break Palahniuk into the mainstream is hard to say. For a fourth book, in fact, the ratio of iffy, "dude"-intensive dialogue to interesting and insightful passages is a little higher than we might wish. In the end, though, the author's nerve and daring pull the whole thing off--just barely. And what's next for Victor Mancini's creator? Leave the last word to him, declaring as he does in the final pages: "Maybe it's our job to invent something better.... What it's going to be, I don't know." --Bob Michaels

While it's always interesting to hear authors read their own work, this production is not likely to prompt a narrating career for Palahniuk (Fight Club) on par with his literary accomplishments. That's not to say, however, that his style doesn't work with this offbeat story of a sex-addicted medical school dropout whose gift is pretending to choke in restaurants and reaping the sympathy checks of the people who "save" him in order to pay for the care of his sick mother. Palahniuk reads with a husky, occasionally whiny voice that's rushed and intense. At times it seems like he's not reading at all, but reciting the novel from memory as he paces the floor with a cup of coffee in one hand and the fingers of the other pressed to his forehead while a cigarette smolders away in the ashtray. He brings a unique sensibility and opts for inflections that other narrators probably would not. After the book implores listeners to turn away and go no further in Chapter 1, for instance, Palahniuk reads the words "Chapter 2" in a tone of voice that says, "OK, you asked for it." That's a fitting sentiment for those who choose to listen, as this bizarre story is by turns hilarious and depressing, read in an idiosyncratic manner by an idiosyncratic author.

In the course of his three novels (e.g., Fight Club), Palahniuk has become a master of depicting the dark and depraved underbelly of our society through the voices of mordantly existential protagonists. Choke is no exception. This time around, readers are ushered into a world of sexaholics, historical theme parks, and other bizarre matters by Victor Mancini, a medical school dropout who has resorted to fake choking in restaurants in order to pay the hospital expenses for his elderly mother, Ida. Ida also happens to be an anarchist whose social terror campaigns made Victor's childhood less than stable. Such is the universe of Palahniuk, who calls the norms of our society into question by presenting us with a parallel world where most of what we hold to be true is exposed as hallow or insane. His writing is as good and as funny as ever, and like many other Palahniuk characters, Victor is quite memorable. Some readers may be shocked and even repulsed by much of the subject matter here. Still, it is recommended for most public and academic libraries.

Crazy Read

One crazy read. My preference is an edgy, gritty novel: bold language, absurd creativity, preposterous characterization, wrapped tightly in a strange story. Choke has it all in multiples, almost to the point of bad taste. At one point, about Chapter 8, the ludicrous characterizations of geriatrics humor began to wear on me and careened off into the ditch of crude and poor writing judgment.

So, I put it aside for a couple of days until curiosity won out. Glad it did. Once past that Chapter 8 mudhole, I began to figure out the brilliant complexity of the story. The humor is very good, strong visualizations, certifiable protag. It became a fun read.

The format, ‘first person present tense,’ is masterfully done. The present tense for an entire novel can get tedious. It needs a great writer to pull it off. Palahniuk does it to perfection. The to and fro on the chronology... a little fatiguing.

Beware, the subject matter is highly graphic and requires a stout constitution. Bingo. On to the Fight Club next. I’m stuffing Palahniuk into the same envelope as Cormac, Woodrell, Pollock, Lansdale, etc. He's in good company.

Though Highly Original, Runs Out of Steam

I ordered this book after reading a plot synopsis and being intrigued, coupled with the fact that the author also wrote Fight Club, one of the most original and compelling movies I’ve seen. It has elements of borderline pornography, so if that bothers you look elsewhere, as the protagonist is a sex addict.

In addition to being sexually impulsive, Victor must support his delusional mother in an assisted care facility, at a cost of $3,000 per month. How to raise that kind of money on a menial, minimum wage job? Victor trolls through area restaurants, staging choking incidents, compelling patrons to “save his life”. Having done so, he finds they subsequently feel responsible for his well-being, sending him money from time to time. The story cycles through choking incidents, sexual encounters, visits between Victor and his Mom (past and present), Victor’s job as a colonial reenactor and his relationship with his best friend, Denny.

The story is filled with other characters, just as “damaged” as Victor. This is certainly original and initially quite entertaining, but though short, it runs out of steam well before a nice plot twist near the end.

All Choke'd Up

I'm not an avid reader. At all. I'm one of the guys who saw a movie and wanted to pick up the book to compare and be able to finally tell people "Yeah, the book is bla bla bla compared to the movie." Maybe this will give me a point in credibility to my hipster friends.

I must say that I'm glad to have picked this title up. The movie isn't for everybody. The book isn't for everybody. This is because the story isn't for everybody. If you are like me and enjoy dark humor with a psychological twist and are not easily offended then this story is for you. For more detail about what this story is actually about then read the amazon review or one of the many other reviews.

To get to the book specifically (while catering to those who are like me and admittingly do not read often), I will say this was a great casual read. It was fun flipping through the pages with the movie in mind and comparing mental notes about accuracy and placement of the story. Since I was going into this book with very little care to the translation from book to film I wasn't disappointed. In fact I felt it was a great supplement to the movie. Yes, some charactors aren't portrayed exactly alike. No, the ending isn't the same, it's quite different. But what a great ride it was. Plus, for a casual reader such as myself the fact that the 304 page book is broken up into many chapters averaging 4 to 7 pages, makes it a great "pick up, put down" or "toilet read."

This book sparks my interest enough to actually start reading more books, and of course starting with another title by Chuck. Maybe Fight Club, but I would like to read another title that isn't accompanied by a movie. I'm curious to see what goes through my mind without the mental images a film director and actors already fed me.

Pick it up. You'll know if you like it just by clicking the "look inside" option anyway.

Set Up Almost Identically to My English Rainbow Study Bible

Arrived on schedule and in good condition. I bought this translation because someone told me that reading a book you know well in the language you want to know helps with learning vocabulary. Flipping through it, it is set up almost identically to my English KJV Rainbow study Bible. This will definitely help me learn Spanish.

After their decade of research with more than 200 couples, the authors conclude that not all batterers are alike, nor is the progression of their violence always predictable. But they have found that batterers tend to fall into one of two categories, which they call "Pit Bulls" and "Cobras." Pit Bulls, men whose emotions quickly boil over, are driven by deep insecurity and an unhealthy dependence on the mates whom they abuse. Pit Bulls also tend to become stalkers, unable to let go of relationships that have ended.

Cobras, on the other hand, are cool and methodical as they inflict pain and humiliation on their spouses or lovers; in one chilling discovery, the authors found that during violent arguments and physical beatings the heart rate of Cobras actually declines. Cobras have often been physically or sexually abused themselves, frequently in childhood, and tend to see violence as an unavoidable part of life.

Knowing which type a batterer is can be crucial to gauging whether an abusive relationship is salvageable (Pit Bulls can sometimes be helped through therapy) or whether the situation is beyond repair. Using the stories of several couples in their study, Jacobson and Gottman look at the dynamics of abusive relationships, refuting prevalent myths ("battering often stops on its own" or "battered women could stop the battering by changing their own behavior"). Never underestimating the inherent risk or danger involved, the authors discuss how women in their study group prepared themselves to leave an abusive relationship, where a battered woman can get help, and how she can keep herself safe.

I Keep Losing Copies to Women Who Say It Saved Their Lives

Several years ago I was lucky enough to chat one on one with Dr. Gottman and left with a signed copy of this book. I treasured it as the book helped save my life, but I've long since gratefully "lost" it to another survivor of domestic violence. Since then I've needed to buy many more copies as the book continues to open the eyes of the battered women I invariably run into. Each time it does, I "lose" another copy of it. To them it had become an invaluable tool and a lifeline in there escape from the hell they were living in. It gave them the necessary insight to see clearly into themselves and what was happening to them. Like them, it helped me enormously and that's why I began to recommend it, and each time I do I see myself in their stunned reactions and awakening to the truth. I'm not a counselor or a professional. I just know that the normal everyday woman can see herself in this book and if it helps her escape then it is invaluable. I never expected that my recommending this book and then "loaning" out my copy would be so helpful to so many women, but it has been. It's a different perspective and one the survivors of abuse can relate to on a fundamental level as it points the way to freedom. I don't search for these women, but I know the distress signals of abuse when I hear them, normally long before anyone sees it. I'll keep buying this book to have on hand when I run into the next woman, and sadly, battering is so prevalent that there is always a next woman. I just gave away my last copy and I think she'll be just fine. Thank you Dr. Gottman and also the late Dr. Jacobsen whose work here keeps his spirit alive. Thank you so much.

enlightening

Jacobsen and Gottman differentiate patterns of violence, different types of violent men as discerned by heart rate no less, and give a great overview of the field that is very accessible. The cobra and pit bull metaphors are really, really useful. I mentally transferred them to male patterned anger that is not physically violent as well as violent: the manipulative cobra vs. the desperate pit bull.

Most violent acts are committed by men, and this book gives a great non pejorative, fact based approach that shows the authors have thoroughly reviewed the literature.

The book is a bit thick and hackneyed regarding advice for women exiting these relationships; they would do well to look closely at traumatic bonding in a future research study.

This book is accessible for a lay reader and a good reference for professionals.

Surprising and real

I was recommended to read this book as insight into my research interests, but it became so much more than just another citation. The authors take the mystery out of abuse and place it right in your world. This book is an excellent tool for understanding the intricacies of violence against women and provides hope for victims that change is possible.

About the Author
Vincent B. Leitch is a George Lynn Cross Research Professor at the University of Oklahoma where he holds the Paul and Carol Daube Sutton Chair in English. A foremost historian of contemporary literary criticism and theory, he is the author of the standard history, American Literary Criticism from the 1930s to the 1980s as well as Deconstructive Criticism and Cultural Criticism, Literary Theory, Poststructuralism (all three books published by Columbia UP), Postmodernism: Local Effects, Global Flows (SUNY Press), Theory Matters (Routledge), Living with Theory (Blackwell), and American Literary Criticism since the 1930s, 2nd edition (Routledge).

William E. Cain is the Mary Jewett Gaiser Professor of English at Wellesley College. A scholar of American literature and American literary criticism, Professor Cain is the author of The Crisis in Criticism: Theory, Literature, and Reform in English Studies (Johns Hopkins UP), F. O. Matthiessen and the Politics of Criticism (U of Wisconsin Press), and Literary Criticism, 1900-1950: The Cambridge History of American Literature (Cambridge UP) as well as the editor or co-editor of several college textbooks, including An Introduction to Literature (Longman), American Literature (Penguin), The Little, Brown Reader (Longman), and Literature for Composition (Longman).

She was also the translator of Jacques Derrida’s Dissemination (U of Chicago P) and Stéphane Mallarmé’s Divagations (Harvard UP/Belknap Press).

John McGowan is the Ruel W. Tyson, Jr. Distinguished Professor of the Humanities and Director of the Institute for the Arts and Humanities at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. A leading critic of postmodernism and social theories relating to literature, he is the author of Postmodernism and its Critics (Cornell UP), Hannah Arendt: A Critical Introduction (U of Minnesota P), Democracy’s Children: Intellectuals and the Rise of Cultural Politics (Cornell UP), and American Liberalism: An Interpretation for Our Time (UNC Press), and editor (with Craig Calhoun) of Hannah Arendt and the Meaning of Politics (U of Minnesota P).

T. Denean Sharpley-Whiting is Professor of French, Professor and Director of African American and Diaspora Studies, and Director of the W. T. Bandy Center for Baudelaire and Modern French Studies at Vanderbilt University. A leading scholar in Black European Studies and comparative Black Diaspora literatures and cultures and theories of race and feminism, she is the author of Pimps Up, Ho's Down: Hip Hop's Hold on Young Black Women (NYU Press), Negritude Women (U of Minnesota Press), Black Venus: Sexualized Savages, Primal Fears, and Primitive Narratives in French (Duke UP), and Frantz Fanon: Conflicts and Feminisms (Rowman & Littlefield), and she has edited or co-edited five books, including The Speech: Race and Barack Obama's "A More Perfect Union" (Bloomsbury).

Jeffrey J. Williams is Professor of English and of Literary and Cultural Studies at Carnegie Mellon University. He is the author of Theory and the Novel: Narrative Reflexivity in the English Tradition (Cambridge UP) and the editor of PC Wars: Politics and Theory in the Academy (Routledge), The Institution of Literature (SUNY Press), and Critics at Work: Interviews (NYU Press). This is a comprehensive, very well-presented anthology of theory and criticism. The selections are presented chronologically, but there is also a table of contents that arranges things in terms of different movements and schools. As with all Norton anthologies, this one s well annotated and introduced; additionally, each theorist and critic has his or her own introduction, along with a helpful primary and secondary bibliography. My only gripe is that the print is very small, enough so that I'll need to buy a pair of over-the-counter reading glasses to read through without straining. That's not a major issue, however, in an otherwise spectacular anthology of a vital subject area for any student of literature.

A must for students of literature

Academic at it's best. A wonderful collection of essays that are particularly useful for those studying English Literature. The pages are tissue thin so some care is required when using this text but because there are so many pages, thicker pages would make the book even heavier than it is.

Great Anthology

Great book. It is a collection of great scholarly essays. It takes fragments of texts from the world's best theorists and sequences them according to content. Judith Butler, Freud, Aristotle, and many other theorists are represented. They also have a wonderfully outlined index. It is helpful when trying to find a specific concept. There are also tables of context listing theorists by date and theme. This is my go to book when trying to find ideas for articles and research papers.
