The best grammar book for Hindi

I taught myself Hindi from this book, so I have a special place in my heart for this particular book. However, bias aside, there are several reasons I feel this book is the best book to learn Hindi grammar.

First, however , this book is not going to teach you how to read the Hindi script, and you MUST know the Hindi script to use this book. (You should learn the Hindi script anyway primarily because Hindi consonants are worlds away from the consonants of most other languages and you need a way to easily represent 6 different d sounds and four different t sounds without getting confused or mistakenly saying what the closest sound is in your mother tongue.) To learn the script , I recommend Snell's "Beginners Hindi Script, " which is what I used to sort through the madness . Secondly, this is not the world's complete grammar guide to Hindi. It is basic grammar. The advanced version covers most of the rest you need to know, but there is no book that teaches all aspects of Hindi grammar. Every book seems to have one or two aspects everyone else left out, which is why I have ten plus Hindi books in my library.

That being said, the main positive of this book is simplicity and organization. It uses minimal jargon. The information is not crammed together like people on a packed train, as is often the case with many Hindi language books, and the Teach Yourself Hindi books in particular. The other shortfall in the Teach Yourself book is it is hard to use as a reference; everything is scattered throughout, as it seems to be primarily for class room use. Also, this book is written by a native speaker used to instructing foreigners. This is a plus, as I feel certain language insights come more easily to native speakers. Finally, from the beginning, Mrs. Jain focuses on colloquial pronunciation. This in particular is a terrible shortfall of Rupert Snell, who seems to be a promoter of book-Hindi, formal pronunciation. But, let's be real, if you are interested in Hindi, you are more than likely interested in colloquial speech ; you either know Indian people or you like Bollywood. In both situations saying, ve and vehe, yah and vah may get you laughed at behind your back, and/or not understand why the people on TV are not saying what you learned.

This is a fabulous primer in basic grammar that does not try to drown you with information. It it's simple and user friendly, once you learn Hindi script.

Well organized tutorial of Hindi grammar

Usha R. Jain has written an excellent grammar for the Hindi Language. Jain starts with the most simple grammatical constructs and proceeds to more complicated sentence structures. Each chapter builds on the rules presented in the previous chapters. Each chapter is organized into three parts. First, Jain presents a description of the grammatical rule and illustrates it with a number of example. The second sections consists of a number of exercises in which Jain presents a template sentence followed by a number of sentences which require students to make substitutions or transformations. The third section of each chapter is a set of English sentences for students to translate into Hindi. The one drawback is that the glossary is poorly organized. The glossary presents English translations of Hindi words grouped by word type (nouns, verbs, etc.) It would have been better to list all words in a single, alphabetical list. An English to Hindi glossary would also have been useful.

Great resource

This a great resource to use in conjunction with other sources. I am a linguist and so I like to use it in conjunction with an actual linguistic descriptive grammar - the info in here is not detailed enough for my purposes. For my Hindi teacher, however, who has no linguistic background, this book is absolutely perfect. Lots of great information, many good examples and practice exercises, and it gives her a good introduction to linguistic concepts without getting so complicated that it's over her head. Wonderful!

Mother Teresa stared out the window of the train as it made its way from the crowded city of Calcutta, India, to the mountain resort town of Darjeeling in September 1946.

The Indian countryside was very beautiful. But the train ride took many hours. With lots of twists and turns and zigzags to get up the mountain, the train moved slowly. That was okay, though. It gave Mother Teresa plenty of time to think.

Mother Teresa was traveling from St. Mary’s School for girls to her annual retreat in Darjeeling. A retreat is a good place to get away from the noise and distractions of everyday life, and to spend quiet time in prayer and reflection. It was the perfect time to think about God and to get energized for the coming school year.

Nice book for an 8 year old

Love these books. My son, who is 9 has been reading them for a little over a year now and this book is wonderful. I must say that this one is not one of his favorites. He is a history junkey, lol. He so far seems to love the Jackie Robinson, Teddy Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Robert E Lee, What is the world series the best as a 8 and 9 year old.

I also read these to him in the evenings and I really enjoy them as a 40 year old father. I have learned so much from them as well. Sometimes I read them before or after my son in order to have an educated discussion with him about the subject of the book. I really also get alot out of them as well.

About the Author
Dr. Feher is professor of Physiology and Biophysics at Virginia Commonwealth University. He received his Ph.D. from Cornell University, and has research interests in the quantitative understanding of the mechanisms of calcium uptake and release by the cardiac sarcoplasmic reticulum, in the mechanisms of calcium transport across the intestine, and in muscle contraction and relaxation. Dr. Feher developed a course in Introductory Quantitative Physiology at VCU and has been course coordinator for more than a decade. He also teaches muscle and cell physiology to medical and graduate students and is course coordinator for the Graduate Physiology survey course in physiology given at VCU’s School of Medicine.

Awful Textbook

HORRIBLE textbook. Please do not choose this as a curriculum if you are an educator. The book lists chapter objectives at the beginning of the chapter. OFTEN this is the only place in the book where that word shows up. The book gives waaaaaay too much technical information and thus all of the main points are missed. The problem sets send you off on a tedious search through the chapters, often one resorts to the internet for answers instead.

About the Author

The late J.J. Sakurai, noted theorist in particle physics, was born in Tokyo, Japan in 1933. He received his B.A. from Harvard University in 1955 and his PhD from Cornell University in 1958. He was appointed as an assistant professor at the University of Chicago, where he worked until he became a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1970. Sakurai died in 1982 while he was visiting a professor at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland.

Jim Napolitano earned an undergraduate Physics degree at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1977, and a PhD in Physics from Stanford University in 1982. Since that time, he has conducted research in experimental nuclear and particle physics, with an emphasis on studying fundamental interactions and symmetries. He joined the faculty at Rensselaer in 1992 after working as a member of the scientific staff at two different national laboratories. He is author and co-author of over 150 scientific papers in refereed journals.

 

Professor Napolitano maintains a keen interest in science education in general, and in particular physics education at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. He has published a textbook, co-authored with Adrian Melissinos, on Experiments in Modern Physics. Prior to his work on Modern Quantum Mechanics ,Second Edition, he has taught both graduate and upper-level undergraduate courses in Quantum Mechanics, as well as an advanced graduate course in Quantum Field Theory.

WARNING -- Missing Chapter 8 (Relativistic Quantum Mechanics)

Be forewarned! This paperback version, ISBN 978-93-325-1900-8, of Modern Quantum Mechanics by Sakurai and Napolitano (2nd Ed) is missing Chapter 8 (Relativistic Quantum Mechanics) of the textbook. As someone else mentioned, other key topics may be missing such as density matrix. It may still hold value for some people since it contains much of the material of the standard US version, but not for me.

This paperback version is labeled as intended for sale in South Asia (India and such); see top left corner in red with white letters. Nothing wrong with selling this in the US. This info is provided just to make it easier for the buyer/customer to identify this 'abridged' version from the full book so that you can be aware of what you're purchasing.

Good content, poor binding

You get what you pay for...Material is slightly abridged from Sakurai's revised edition (missing a chapter on relativstic QM and some sections on density matrices).

The binding is absolutely worthless! It came off after less than 10 hours of perusing the book...Appropriate for a graduate-level quantum mechanics class, found it to be clear and helpful in terms of content. However, if shelf life is a big factor when you purchase textbooks, I would recommend that you buy a hardcover copy instead!

For a second look at Quantum mechanics (let's say after griffiths QM), I think this book is ideal. The book uses dirac notation throughout, and less emphasis on wave mechanics, but that is covered pretty well in Griffiths. The prose is clear, and the derivations are straightforward. The emphasis is on theory rather than applications, but if you want to do physics theory, this is pretty great. I think the problems are at the right difficulty level, they will challenge you, but in general don't require some trickery/genius insight: you can be confident the text does prepare you to solve them. In general, I think it's a very balanced book.

About the Author
John E. Adamson is Emeritus Professor of Business and Law in the Department of Finance and General Business at Missouri State University. Adamson received a BS from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York; an MA in International Relations from Georgetown University; and an MBA and a JD from the University of Virginia at Charlottesville. A decorated disabled veteran and past four-term mayor and school board member of his hometown, Adamson is author of numerous business law texts, with a concentration in environmental law.

Amanda Morrison is an attorney at Generali USA Life Reassurance Company. Morrison received dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Finance and Insurance from Missouri State University and a Juris Doctor from Western New England College School of Law. She is a member of the Kansas and Missouri bars.

Great Law Textbook

I had to get this book for my grandson for a business law class and it was very informative easy to understand and even a great read. This book contains just about everything the common layman would need to know in their everyday lives and then some.

About the Author
Pam Johnson-Bennett hosted the Animal Planet UK series "Psycho Kitty." She is best-selling author of 7 books on cat behavior. With a career that began in 1982, Pam is considered a pioneer in the field of cat behavior consulting. 

Pam was vice president of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants and the founder and longtime chair of the IAABC cat division. She served on the American Humane Association's Advisory Board on Animal Behavior and Training and the American Humane Association Cat Health and Welfare Forum. She is also on the Advisory Board for Tree House Humane Society. She lectures worldwide at veterinary conferences and animal welfare organizations.

Pam is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Winn Feline Foundation Media Award and the IAABC cat division award.

In addition to her work with cats, Pam is the co-author of Cookies for Dinner. This book chronicles the funny and often embarrassing side of motherhood. The sequel to Cookies for Dinner is set for release in late 2015/early2016.

I highly recommend this book for any type of cat owner

I highly recommend this book for any type of cat owner, new or old.

I decided to get this book because my 14 year old cat passed away suddenly. I got her as a kitten in 6th grade, and she was awesome, but I couldn't remember most details of raising a kitten and also wanted to see advice on behavior modification. This book covers everything. I really liked the section about playtime because it honestly did make me "Think like a Cat" in terms of what playtime means for theme and how to make it meaningful for them.

After reading this book I feel much more prepared for my two kittens I will be getting in a month and a half. It helped me make a list of products I need to buy for them (toys, grooming supplies, medicine), and there really is a chapter for any issue you need help with or may face in the future.

It works ! Very positive for your pets and you. We're all happier and closer.

I got positive results immediately and my three cats are happier. Using the principals in Think Like a Cat, I made a few changes that
got us from scratching, waking me up during the night or early morning for food, and getting on the counters incessantly, to sleeping through the night, using the great new scratching post, and staying off the counters, without yelling, squirting with water, or frustration. I didn't even realize what I had been putting up with. Now I enjoy them so much more, and with the positive changes, I have time to play with them more. My ten year old cat is actually making playful gestures ! They enjoy the new verticle spots I made. My husband wouldn't agree to a cat tree, and I didn't want one either, but I was able to see verticle places where I could make a comfy spot for them around the house, and they are enjoying their new perches. Thank-you !

Exceptionally informative book on cats and cat behavior

I have not finished this book yet but have gotten more than my money's worth. My plan is to reread this after completing it the first pass, and then referencing it often. I'm not actually nuts, I have good reason for my thoroughness.

My husband and I recently lost our beloved cat Isis, after 19 years together. The loss was all but devastating to us. We have a second cat, an elderly male who is now 13-years old, and was also grieving the loss. After a couple of weeks of the three of us wallowing in pain, we decided to adopt a rescue animal-companion. We left ourselves open to adopting as many as three. It would give us a total of four cats which we felt we could manage financially, but more importantly we would be able to meet the time and attention needs of a maximum of four.

Within a matter of 21 days we all but fell into three separate adoptions. The newbies range in age from about 5 months to just now 5 weeks. They had a range of issues from two of them being underweight, one being found off of the side of an expressway and the youngest that was weeks too young to be away from her mother or at the very, very least her other litter mates. Adding to our challenges has been misrepresented ages and that we brought them into the house in stages, but still rather fast.

The oldest of the new adoptees, a male that was stated to be 13-weeks, (turned out to be closer to 18 weeks) came home to us on April 14th. The next a female stated to be 13-weeks, (turned out to be closer to 7 weeks) came home on April 30th. The assumption had been that the two "13-week old kittens" would be able to play and keep one another company. In actuality after two weeks of solid meals and a safe environment, the male blossomed adding nearly three pounds in the 24 DAYS we've had him. He is no longer the scrawny, feeble-looking, nearly feral kitten that he appeared to be. He's healthy and inquisitive and wonderful!

BUT, now there is a clear 4-pound difference between these two kittens. Play must be monitored as he learns his strength and she learns her limits. Adding to that, we have a ONE-POUND kitten that came home with us on May 4th. They had represented her to be nearly 8 weeks, as it turns out she was much closer to 4. She was supposedly weaned, but "torn" is a better description. She wants to play with the others but it is even more important that limits be set for her. Adding into this collage of personalities and specific needs, we have our elderly cat. He is doing better every day but this has been no easy transition for him. So how does all of this relate to this book?

The information has been incredibly helpful! Instead of attempting to force our version of integration on each of these incredible life forms, we are seeing life from their perspectives. It changes EVERYTHING! There are so many things that never even would have crossed our minds. I'm making "puzzle feeders" for our 5-month old to help him with some of his innate need to "figure things out". He also requires a GREAT deal more release for his excess energy, where the two girls need a great deal more rest. Separate spaces, safe hiding places, access to "escape routes" from one another, all of these things are different when looked at from the floor of our house UP, rather than looking around or DOWN on what is available to them. I have rambled on way too long, but I will say that I HIGHLY recommend this book!

One quick note regarding the one-star reviews stating that this was either not informative enough or that they disagree with keeping cats inside the home, I just could not disagree more.

I had no idea of the blood types of cats, had never heard of a puzzle feeder and never considered whether or not I could have a real impact on the emotional wellness of each of these tossed-together lives on anything like the level that we have. We are doing many things now intentionally rather than accidentally bumping into ideas that may have been helpful. It feels fantastic to offer such a stable environment to them all.

When it come to the idea of keeping cats confined, I think this probably depends. If one has many acres of safe spaces for a cat then sure, in and out is probably fine. In either a suburban or urban setting this is just not the case. If one simply looks around at their neighborhood and notices the lack of weeds in the lawns due to routine weed-killing regimes, watches strays without adequate immunization, observes the number of cars in their area including distracted drivers, and considers the very real possibility of someone's intentional malice towards their cat, it changes the concept of "keeping them prisoner". Also, if one feels their home to be a prison, the cats are probably not the biggest issue they may have. Home should never feel this way to either us or our animal companions. I agreed with the author. We may debate whether or not to spay, neuter and/or declaw. We can debate whether or not they should be allowed to roam the neighborhoods or remain within the home. What we should not debate, should be able to in fact agree on, is that each of these decisions will impact the entire life cycle of another living being. They are completely dependent on us to make these decisions based not on our opinions, but rather what is in the best interest of the animals, based solely on facts. This book offers factual statements of what is in the best interest of our cats. This is a well researched book that offers those of us sharing our lives with cats, insights that we simply might not have considered or been offered in any other way.

Great book that I have already planned to also purchase in paperback for quick reference.

Poor play, brilliant edition

This tragicomedy, written in 1623-4 and set in Tunis, is highly revealing of contemporary attitudes to the Turks and Islam. It juxtaposes the sudden turns and desperate courage produced both by falling in love and by religious conversion. If its attitude towards Islam is predictably hostile, it features a Jesuit who is wholly admirable and is the main agent in achieving the victory in the play of chastity and the Christian faith; this is surprising even in the context of the more tolerant attitude towards Catholics that was developing in England at this time. All this is marvellously brought out in the learned and hugely readable introduction by the editor. His footnote annotation is also exemplary. The play itself is a lively piece of theatre, full of dramatic twists and turns, which would, however, be more effective if they (and the characters) were more credible. Massinger had chosen a theme of huge potential, but all he aims at is entertainment. The playgoers of his time were duly amused; but for a modern reader the crudity of this treatment of Christianity versus Islam is hard to take.

Massinger's Turkish turn

A real surprise this one. Those of you who've seen recent productions of Massinger will know how racy and how engaging a dramatist he was in comic and tragic genres. As Michael Neill observes, however, Massinger's qualities as a writer of tragi-comedy have not been so readily appreciated. But with the 'clash of civilisations' grabbing contemporary headlines, early modern attitudes to the Islamic world have become the focus of much interest.

Neill tells us that in the half century before Massinger's play appeared (in 1624), no less than 60 drama-texts featured Islamic subjects or settings. He also provides some staggering figures to help contextualise this renegade play: by 1589, for example, over half of the population of Algiers, on the Barbary coast of north Africa, comprised Christian renegades (ie those who had 'turned Turk' and sworn allegiance to Islam). By Massinger's time, attacks by Barbary pirates had reached British and Irish coasts, from which many captives were taken and sold into slavery. Fears surrounding the Islamic 'other' would have been as prevalent then as now.

Neill's skilful introduction alerts the reader to the way in which the playwright interweaves sexual and commercial themes, to characters' castration and feminisation anxieties, and to Massinger's sophisticated deployment of structural parallels. Less successful, arguably, is the editor's over-zealous commitment to the iambic pentameter. This footnote is typical of many: `By eliding Q's "it was" to "`twas" and stressing the first syllable of 'betrayed' it is possible to deliver the line as a more-or-less acceptable iambic pentameter.' Such advice underestimates the flexibility of Jacobean dramatic verse and will probably not be of much practical value to modern-day performers. Elsewhere, however, footnotes enrich understanding.

The Renegado has not been staged since the mid-C17, and this volume is an eloquent reminder that its revival is long overdue. Given the current climate, however, such a revival seems a long way off.

This is a must have book for anyone wanting to start a small business, already owns a small business or even in a sales position. The 10 steps outlined are so simple to implement, and make sense as to why they would bring success. Great writing and easy to understand terminology. No matter what you sell, this book will help you thrive and give you the best chance at not becoming a stat of businesses big and small closing their doors.
