Review
This book introduces students to eighteen Catullus poems in an innovative manner and is designed to ready them for a more in-depth study of him in an AP course or at the college level. An introduction to Catullus, a short bibliography, material on meters employed in the text, a grammatical appendix, an introduction to figures of speech, and a pull-out vocabulary are included. A hallmark of the text is all the user-friendly help it provides.

The authors' introduction to Catullus is well written and supplies essential information on his life, times, and poetry, as well as his manuscript tradition, which is unusual for a book of this nature. The bibliography lists seven translations of his poetry and nineteen seminal works for further study~ Metrics are explained in a manner that is easily comprehended by students meeting Catullus for the first time.

The following poems are included in this order: 1, 51, 5, 7, 87, 8, 70, 72, 11, 86, 83, 85, 43, 13, 50, 101, 64 (11. 1-15), 65 (11. 1-14), and 65 (11. 15-24). They deal with the Lesbia affair, Catullus' friends, and snippets of his 'poems from the head.' In accordance with sound pedagogical principles, each poem is prefaced by a brief introduction that orients the reader to its content and cultural and literary background. Throughout most of the book, there follows a grammar review and exercises that are germane to the poem under study.

The text of more than half of the poems is presented in two versions. One is simplified and is designed to assist the learner's comprehension, the other is the unaltered text. The vocabulary, whose entries are defined in the context of each poem, and the ample notes face the text. Words not found in the facing vocabulary are in the pull-out section at the back of the book. By the time the student gets to the actual poem, she/he should be able to read it with relative ease. Questions designed to help one appreciate Catullus' art and style follow the original text.

The grammatical appendix includes both forms and rules. An especially fine aspect of this section is the grammatical examples based on the poems themselves. The appendix on figures of speech is lucid and also uses examples from the poems. Though it does not include all of the figures encountered, most of the major ones are.

In conclusion, Catullus: A LEGAMUS Transitional Reader is an excellent text that allows students to make a smooth transition from a basic Latin course to reading, interpreting, and appreciating authentic Latin. Its approach is comprehensive, thoughtful, and humane. This is exactly the type of reader needed to encourage students to continue Latin at the upper levels. --Daniel N. Erickson, University of North Dakota, The Classical Outlook

An excellent reader
By Linda H.
At first I couldn't manage one page but by dint of trying it is getting easier. The structure of the book is excellent. I would recommend highly. It makes reading and understanding Catullus and his poetry feasible, something I have always wanted to do. Very straight forward explanations and exercises. Thank you to the authors.

It works!
By Diana Poskrop
I'm a student, a self-learner, always on the lookout for material to help me move into 'real Latin.' CATULLUS: A LEGAMUS TRANSITIONAL READER fits the bill. It works -- I can read Latin!

The text is visually inviting. The print is large, easy to read, no page is so filled with material that it's cramped.

Each of the 19 progressively difficult (another plus) selections includes:

* An introduction that briefly tells what the poem is about;

* One grammatical point, appearing in that poem, to focus on;

* A clear explanation of that grammatical point, examples in English, and exercises;

* A blank page for your own notes;

* Things to think about before reading the poem;

* Separate vocabulary and notes lists;

* Facing the above, the editors' version of the poem with omitted words in parentheses; if necessary, the poem's words are put into an order more natural to English speakers; related words that don't appear near each other in a different font so they stand out;

* The poem, or part of the poem, as written by Catullus (with macrons);

* Questions and things to think about after having read the poem.

* Simple and clear explanation of meter.

In keeping with a comprehensive approach, there's a drawn map of Catullus's world, articles about Catullus's life and works, about Lesbia, a list of suggested translations, a grammatical appendix (great for skimming through to catch things you may have forgotten), and a pull-out vocabulary sheet with basic words.

My complaints are few and minor. Every now and again, there's something that I feel could've used a more detailed explanation, or a vocabulary word for which I found a better definition in the dictionary. Minor stuff. Forget I said anything.

Best of all, CATULLUS gives me hope. Here's real Latin that, with the help of Prof. Kitchell and Mr. Smith, I can now READ!

Semper fidelis, meus A Legamus!
By F. O'Neill
Another of this spendid series. If you are an intermediate Latin student and want to read (and why else would you study Latin?) the real texts of classic Roman writers without bitter humiliation and bottomless woe, you will find this priceless. See my review of the Caesar volume for much more. And you have already chosen your author well. Catallus is a honey!

The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life, One Night at a Time, by Arianna Huffington

We are in the midst of a sleep deprivation crisis, writes Arianna Huffington, the co-founder and editor in chief of The Huffington Post. And this has profound consequences – on our health, our job performance, our relationships and our happiness. What is needed, she boldly asserts, is nothing short of a sleep revolution.  Only by renewing our relationship with sleep can we take back control of our lives.

In her bestseller Thrive, Arianna wrote about our need to redefine success through well-being, wisdom, wonder, and giving. Her discussion of the importance of sleep as a gateway to this more fulfilling way of living struck such a powerful chord that she realized the mystery and transformative power of sleep called for a fuller investigation.

The result is a sweeping, scientifically rigorous, and deeply personal exploration of sleep from all angles, from the history of sleep, to the role of dreams in our lives, to the consequences of sleep deprivation, and the new golden age of sleep science that is revealing the vital role sleep plays in our every waking moment and every aspect of our health – from weight gain, diabetes, and heart disease to cancer and Alzheimer’s.

In The Sleep Revolution, Arianna shows how our cultural dismissal of sleep as time wasted compromises our health and our decision-making and undermines our work lives, our personal lives -- and even our sex lives. She explores all the latest science on what exactly is going on while we sleep and dream.  She takes on the dangerous sleeping pill industry, and all the ways our addiction to technology disrupts our sleep. She also offers a range of recommendations and tips from leading scientists on how we can get better and more restorative sleep, and harness its incredible power.

In today's fast-paced, always-connected, perpetually-harried and sleep-deprived world, our need for a good night’s sleep is more important – and elusive -- than ever. The Sleep Revolution both sounds the alarm on our worldwide sleep crisis and provides a detailed road map to the great sleep awakening that can help transform our lives, our communities, and our world.

By looking honestly into her own journey, Arianna uncovers important markers in the human journey through detailed research, knit together in a way that broadens our foundation. The chapters ‘Sleep Throughout History’ and ‘Dreams’ are, by themselves, an invaluable contribution to our modern consciousness. The Sleep Revolution unravels the tense threads we tangle ourselves in, giving us a chance to re-engage the forces that sustain us. It explains why we are so tired and how that has to change. Here is the science, history, and culture of the role that sleep plays in our lives —and the role that it should really play.”
—Atul Gawande, MD, MPH, Surgeon, Researcher, and Author of Being Mortal

“A lucid, compelling, and rational narrative on the importance of sleep to our mental, emotional and physical health.  In The Sleep Revolution, Arianna Huffington exposes the dangers of our modern-day attitude towards sleep and advocates for a renewed emphasis on the importance of sleep to our well-being.  It is nothing short of a call to arms for policy makers, CEOs, parents, educators, hospital administrators, and coaches to confront the fact that insufficient sleep is a modern-day health crisis.”
--Patrick Fuller, Associate Professor of Neurology, Harvard Medical School and Deaconess Medical Center

"This is one of those books that, if you don’t read, when you’re dead you’re really going to wish you had.  I never thought I would have needed a self-help book for sleep, but I did! Sleep is everything – that’s my takeaway, and so you better know how to do it."
-- Bill Maher

OUR CURRENT SLEEP CRISIS

Sarvshreshth Gupta was a first-year analyst at Goldman Sachs in San Francisco in 2015. Overwhelmed by the hundred-hour workweeks, he decided to leave the bank in March. He soon returned, though whether this was a result of social or self-inflicted pressure is still unclear. A week later, he called his father at 2:40 a.m. saying he hadn’t slept in two days. He said he had a presentation to complete and a morning meeting to prepare for, and was alone in the office. His father insisted he go home, and Gupta replied that he would stay at work just a bit longer. A few hours later, he was found dead on the street outside his home. He had jumped from his high-rise building.

Death from overwork has its own word in Japanese (karoshi), in Chinese (guolaosi), and in Korean (gwarosa). No such word exists in English, but the casualties are all around us. And though this is an extreme example of the consequences of not getting enough sleep, sleep deprivation has become an epidemic.

It is a specter haunting the industrialized world. Simply put: we don’t get enough sleep. And it’s a much bigger problem—with much higher stakes—than many of us realize. Both our daytime hours and our nighttime hours are under assault as never before. As the amount of things we need to cram into each day has increased, the value of our awake time has skyrocketed. Benjamin Franklin’s “Time is money!” has become a corporate-world mantra. And this has come at the expense of our time asleep, which since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution we have treated like some dull, distant relative we visit only reluctantly and out of obligation, for as short a time as we can manage.

But scientists are resoundingly confirming what our ancestors knew instinctively: that our sleep is not empty time. Sleep is a time of intense neurological activity—a rich time of renewal, memory consolidation, brain and neurochemical cleansing, and cognitive maintenance. Properly appraised, our sleeping time is as valuable a commodity as the time we are awake. In fact, getting the right amount of sleep enhances the quality of every minute we spend with our eyes open.

But today much of our society is still operating under the collective delusion that sleep is simply time lost to other pursuits, that it can be endlessly appropriated at will to satisfy our increasingly busy lives and overstuffed to-do lists. We see this delusion reflected in the phrase “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” has flooded popular consciousness, including a hit Bon Jovi song, an album by the late rocker Warren Zevon, and a crime film starring Clive Owen. Everywhere you turn, sleep deprivation is glamorized and celebrated: “You snooze, you lose.” The phrase “catch a few z’s” is telling: the last letter of the alphabet used to represent that last thing on our culture’s shared priority list. The combination of a deeply misguided definition of what it means to be successful in today’s world—that it can come only through burnout and stress—along with the distractions and temptations of a 24/7 wired world, has imperiled our sleep as never before.

I experienced firsthand the high price we’re paying for cheating sleep when I collapsed from exhaustion, and it pains me to see dear friends (and strangers) go through the same struggle. Rajiv Joshi is the managing director of the B Team—a nonprofit on whose board I serve, founded by Richard Branson and Jochen Zeitz to help move business beyond profit as the only metric of success. In June 2015, he had a seizure at age thirty-one during a B Team meeting in Bellagio, Italy, collapsing from exhaustion and sleep deprivation. Unable to walk, he spent eight days in a hospital in Bellagio and weeks after in physical therapy. In talking with medical experts, he learned that we all have a “seizure threshold,” and when we don’t take time to properly rest, we move closer and closer to it. Rajiv had crossed his threshold and fallen off the cliff. “The struggle for a more just and sustainable world,” he told me when he was back at work, “is a marathon, not a sprint, and we can’t forget that it starts at home with personal sustainability.”

According to a recent Gallup poll, 40 percent of all American adults are sleep-deprived, clocking significantly less than the recommended minimum seven hours of sleep per night. Getting enough sleep, says Dr. Judith Owens, the director of the Center for Pediatric Sleep Disorders at Boston Children’s Hospital, is “just as important as good nutrition, physical activity, and wearing your seat belt.” But most people hugely underestimate their need for sleep. That’s why sleep, says Dr. Michael Roizen, the chief wellness officer of the Cleveland Clinic, “is our most underrated health habit.” A National Sleep Foundation report backs this up: two-thirds of us are not getting enough sleep on weeknights.

The crisis is global. In 2011, 32 percent of people surveyed in the United Kingdom said they had averaged less than seven hours of sleep a night in the previous six months. By 2014 that number had rocketed up to 60 percent. In 2013, more than a third of Germans and tw-thirds of Japanese surveyed said they do not get sufficient sleep on weeknights. In fact, the Japanese have a term, inemuri, which roughly translates as “to be asleep while present”—that is, to be so exhausted that you fall asleep in the middle of a meeting. This has been praised as a sign of dedication and hard work—but it is actually another symptom of the sleep crisis we are finally confronting.

The wearable-device company Jawbone collects sleep data from thousands of people wearing its UP activity trackers. As a result, we now have a record of the cities that get the least amount of sleep. Tokyo residents sleep a dangerously low 5 hours and 45 minutes a night. Seoul clocks in at 6 hours and 3 minutes; Dubai, 6 hours and 13 minutes; Singapore, 6 hours and 27 minutes; Hong Kong, 6 hours and 29 minutes; and Las Vegas, 6 hours and 32 minutes. When you’re getting less sleep than Las Vegas, you have a problem.

Of course, much of this can be laid at the feet of work—or, more broadly, how we define work, which is colored by how we define success and what’s important in our lives. The unquestioning belief that work should always have the top claim on our time has been a costly one. And it has gotten worse, as technology has allowed a growing number of us to carry our work with us—in our pockets and purses in the form of our phones—wherever we go.

Our houses, our bedrooms—even our beds—are littered with beeping, vibrating, flashing screens. It’s the never-ending possibility of connecting—with friends, with strangers, with the entire world, with every TV show or movie ever made—with just the press of a button that is, not surprisingly, addictive. Humans are social creatures—we’re hardwired to connect. Even when we’re not actually connecting digitally, we’re in a constant state of heightened anticipation. And always being in this state doesn’t exactly put us in the right frame of mind to wind down when it’s time to sleep. Though we don’t give much thought into how we put ourselves to bed, we have little resting places and refueling shrines all over our houses, like little doll beds, where our technology can recharge, even if we can’t.

Being perpetually wired is now considered a prerequisite for success, as Alan Derickson writes in Dangerously Sleepy: “Sleep deprivation now resides within a repertoire of practices deemed essential to survival in a globally competitive world. More so than in the time of Thomas Edison, depriving oneself of necessary rest or denying it to those under one’s control is considered necessary to success in a 24/7/365 society. Americans have a stronger ideological rationale than ever to distrust any sort of dormancy.”

And Americans are anything but dormant. From 1990 to 2000, American workers added the equivalent of another full workweek to their year. A 2014 survey by Skift, a travel website, showed that more than 40 percent of Americans had not taken a single vacation day that year. Much of that added work time has come at the expense of sleep. Dr. Charles Czeisler, the head of the Division of Sleep and Circadian Disorders at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, estimates that in the past fifty years our sleep on work nights has dropped from eight and a half hours to just under seven. Thirty percent of employed Americans now report getting six hours of sleep or less per night, and nearly 70 percent describe their sleep as insufficient. Getting by on less than six hours of sleep is one of the biggest factors in job burnout.

And for far too many people in the world, the vicious cycle of financial deprivation also feeds into the vicious cycle of sleep deprivation. If you’re working two or three jobs and struggling to make ends meet, “get more sleep” is probably not going to be near the top of your priorities list. As in the case of health care, access to sleep is not evenly—or fairly—distributed. Sleep is another casualty of inequality. A 2013 study from the University of Chicago found that “lower socio-economic position was associated with poorer subjective sleep quality, increased sleepiness and/or increased sleep complaints.” But the paradox here is that the more challenging our circumstances, the more imperative it is to take whatever steps we can to tap in to our resilience to help us withstand and overcome the challenges we face. There’s a reason we’re told on airplanes to “secure your own mask first.”

Where we live can also affect our sleep. “I have never seen a study that hasn’t shown a direct association between neighborhood quality and sleep quality,” said Lauren Hale, a Stony Brook University professor of preventive medicine. If you’re living in a neighborhood with gang warfare and random acts of violence, sleep will inevitably suffer—yet another example of sleep deprivation’s connection with deeper social problems.

THE COST OF LOST SLEEP

It is industrialization, for all its benefits, that has exacerbated our flawed relationship with sleep on such a massive scale. We sacrifice sleep in the name of productivity, but, ironically, our loss of sleep, despite the extra hours we put in at work, adds up to more than eleven days of lost productivity per year per worker, or about $2,280. This results in a total annual cost of sleep deprivation to the US economy of more than $63 billion, in the form of absenteeism and presenteeism (when employees are present at work physically but not really mentally focused). “Americans are not missing work because of insomnia,” said Harvard Medical School professor Ronald C. Kessler. “They are still going to their jobs, but they’re accomplishing less because they’re tired. In an information-based economy, it’s difficult to find a condition that has a greater effect on productivity.”

Sleep disorders cost Australia more than $5 billion a year in health care and indirect costs. And “reduction in life quality” added costs equivalent to a whopping $31.4 billion a year. A report, aptly titled “Re-Awakening Australia,” linked lack of sleep with lost productivity and driving and workplace accidents. In the United Kingdom, a survey showed that one in five employees had recently missed work or come in late because of sleep deprivation. The researchers estimated that this is equivalent to a loss of more than 47 million hours of work per year, or a £453 million loss in productivity. And almost a third of all UK employees reported feeling tired every morning. Yet, though awareness is spreading, few companies have given sleep the priority it deserves, considering its effects on their bottom line. In Canada, 26 percent of the workforce reported having called in sick because of sleep deprivation. And nearly two-thirds of Canadian adults report feeling tired “most of the time.”

It turns out that women need more sleep than men, so the lack of sleep has even more negative mental and physical effects on them. Duke Medical Center researchers found that women are at a greater risk for heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, and depression. “We found that for women, poor sleep is strongly associated with high levels of psychological distress, and greater feelings of hostility, depression and anger,” said Edward Suarez, the lead author of the study. “In contrast, these feelings were not associated with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.”

As women have entered the workplace—a workplace created in large measure by men, which uses our willingness to work long hours until we ultimately burn out as a proxy for commitment and dedication—they are still stuck with the heavy lifting when it comes to housework. The upshot is that women end up making even more withdrawals from their sleep bank. “They have so many commitments, and sleep starts to get low on the totem pole,” says Michael Breus, the author of Beauty Sleep. “They may know that sleep should be a priority, but then, you know, they’ve just got to get that last thing done. And that’s when it starts to get bad.”

According to Dr. William Dement, the founder of the Stanford Sleep Disorders Clinic (the first of its kind), working mothers who have young children at home have seen an additional 241 hours of work and commuting time added to their lives annually since 1969.

Sarah Bunton, a mother and cognitive-skills trainer, described her experience on The Huffington Post: “Do you ever have one of those days where you want to hit pause? Let me rephrase: do you ever have a day where you don’t want to hit pause? . . . There really isn’t an end of the day for most moms, working or otherwise. There’s usually not a beginning, either, just a continuation of whatever chaos preceded the momentary silence . . . Mommy wants a nap.”

“Let’s face it, women today are tired. Done. Cooked. Fried,” wrote Karen Brody, founder of the meditation program Bold Tranquility. “I coach busy women and this is what they tell me all the time: ‘I spent years getting educated and now I don’t have any energy to work.’ ”

Dr. Frank Lipman, the founder of the Eleven Eleven Wellness Center in New York, sees so many patients who are sleep-deprived and exhausted that he came up with his own term for them. “I started calling these patients ‘spent,’ because that was how they seemed to me,” he writes. He compares this to his time working in rural South Africa: “There I saw many diseases arising from poverty and malnutrition but I didn’t see anyone who was ‘spent,’ as I do today in New York.”

The world is too much with us; late and soon,

Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers . . .

For this, for everything, we are out of tune.

—William Wordsworth, “The World Is Too Much with Us”

No filtering of the quality of studies and science she refers to
By Classic
It's like someone Googled everything the Internet had to say about sleep and pasted it into a book with minimal editing.

There is no filtering in a sense of the quality of studies and science that are referred to in the book. A lot of the author's claimed problems with our modern daily lives that prevent us from sleeping will probably just make you end up more paranoid about losing sleep and as a result have a harder time sleeping.

I recommend instead - say goodnight to insomnia by gregg jacobs. An author experienced in the subject and providing higher quality content in less words. Helped change my sleeping habits significantly.

Sleep well.

Sleep now or die: this book showed me how I was unsleeping my way to death.
By Just My Opinion....
Unlike many reviewers, I do not struggle to get to sleep. But I don't like to go to bed. I'm a night owl and tend to stay up until my eyes shut out of desperation. Then I sleep very well. Before you posit that I sleep well because I only sleep when exhausted....no. I sleep well even when I go to bed at a decent hour, but that happens about twice a year, and then usually by accident.

So. Why would I read Arianna's book? Well, basically, because I had a suspicion that there was something in here that would address my strange relationship to sleep. And what did I find?

I've been UNSLEEPING myself to death for over half my life.

Well, that certainly got my attention. And now I get more sleep...I actively drag my unwilling self off to bed MUCH earlier than I have for the last several decades of my life. And yes, it makes a huge difference. I'm still a night owl, and ideally, I get my 9 hours by sleeping in (at least according to my early-bird family members), but this book has (excuse the pun) woken me up as to the devastating long-term damage that can happen through consistent lack of sleep.

And it was even more horrifying to me since I don't fit the pattern of the usual causes of sleep-loss: I don't have a smart phone, am not checking the computer late at night, do not suffer from insomnia or other cannot-fall-asleep situations, and yet, here I was getting far too little sleep.

There were some chapters less - ahem - riveting than others...the ones on our culture of over-work/too much device interaction are relevant for a lot of people, just not for me. The chapters on how the brain uses sleep to chemically function, repair itself and regenerate were my favourites (and the most acutely uncomfortable for me to read, based on my situation).

I never thought this book would tell me how to get to sleep - and it's NOT a HOW-TO SELF-HELP book - but this read certainly got my attention and got me to drag my head to the pillow! Sleep now or die.

Enjoyable but not realistic
By Kindle Customer
I really enjoyed this book and the various aspects of sleep it covered. It was written in an engaging style that made me want to continue learning about the topic.

My biggest criticism is that some of the conclusions she made are a good idea in theory but in practice most working people can't entirely avoid. I agree that its always best to stay in bed to fend off a cold but that in the world where time off from work is measured most peoples best choice is to go into work pushing meds and tea. Most people would prefer to go home and sleep if they are tired but eating a candy bar helps them complete the task at hand. This sleep revolution certainly doesn't apply to the average person who needs to work for someone else!

Beautiful Guide! I've always been a fan of these guides, and this one certaily doesn't disappoint.
By Jennifer Saurenman
It's such an easy guide to use. All of the important practical, safety and health info is organized in one place. Cities organized by region, with plenty of color maps for each of the major city centers (including metro maps where applicable). The book is packed with color photos and great illustrations of some of the more famous sites, explaining layout and architectural details for the illustrations.

The overview about the country is very well written, but "The History of Spain" is one of my favorite sections. It is a fantastic condensed history book and has a neat illustrated timeline to help you remember who different people were and the events that shaped Spanish history.

My purpose in buying this was to get a low cost guide with lots of pictures to help me identify locations from slides taken 25 years ago. Bought the older edition to save money and it has worked out perfectly for my purpose. These are not always the best guides in terms of information or picking routes to follow when you're laying out your own itinerary, but they offer the unique advantage of giving you a good visual idea of what you are going to see - or in my case what I saw 25 years before. :-)

Great guide

I love the Eyewitness series books for travel. They are informative and worth reading before a trip.
My biggest criticism is the sheer weight of them. It makes them hard to throw in your bag and carry around with you.
I wish these books were available for Kindle.

Review
"[Reasoning and relationships] is a very good approach. I plan on remembering it and using that concept...It nicely describes what we are trying to do in teaching college physics: think about what is going on, what principles apply, how these relate and then what we can do with it (noting that we may need to find/supply additional 'missing' information."David Aaron, South Dakota State University

"I believe the format of Giordano, with its triple emphasis on establishing a connection between forces and motion, helping the students construct systematic (5-step) approaches to problem solving, and guiding them into developing their reasoning skills is extremely valuable...Giordano spices up the appeal of his textbook through a wide range of types of examples--while some are of course more like the standard, many more are frequently interesting and unique. This is a major strength of the textbook that I believe the students will quickly connect with."Gerald Cleaver, Baylor University

About the Author
Nicholas J. Giordano is the James Huber Distinguished Professor of Physics and Head of the Department of Physics at Purdue University. In 2003, he was named Teacher of the Year for the state of Indiana and was also awarded the Outstanding Teaching Award for Undergraduate Teaching at Purdue. Giordano earned his Ph.D. at Yale University and is a respected researcher in the field of nanoscience.

No formula explanations
By tony
If you must use this book for a class, then you need to leave the class. this book does not explain any of the complex formula's, in fact it is hard to even find them at all. it mostly just gives examples, like 80% of the book is examples!

Almost perfect
By Andy P.
The book is very easy to follow and broken down into logical chapters. It could use more examples though, as well as better break down of equations, if it showed the steps for finding the final equations it would be extremely helpful.

A FOREIGN CITY WHERE LOST SOULS SHOULD FEAR TO WANDER: 'ARE YOU TOURISTS?', ASKED THE STRANGER
By Pippin O' Rohan
'The Comfort of Strangers' (1981), by the British author Ian McEwan is a fascinating psychological and short crime novel about a contemporary young English couple on a brief holiday to Italy, causing one to wonder about the plausibility of their encounter and strange bonding with an older married couple from Canada who live there and the dark ending to this narration. It is one of the author's earliest efforts, frowned on by quite a few readers of the above, including some admirers today of this acclaimed writer's ongoing and brilliant work. But over the last decades having taken it up again on one or two occasions, and interpreting it slightly differently with the passage of time, it has offered this reader some insight as to how this vacation could have taken such an improbable and sinister turn. It has a warped realistic twist to it, reminiscent of some gothic writings by Daphne du Maurier, and blended with a fatalistic brew of original notes crafted exquisitely by McEwan.

Mary and Colin, an attractive-looking couple most likely in their late twenties, or early thirties, have now reached a lull and desultory stage in their long-term affair. To this reader, they are standing at a pivotal turning-point in their relationship where they are either going to marry, or go their different ways. A holiday is suggested, a change from their daily routine, more time together just the two of them, while leaving Mary's children from a previous marriage at home in England. They choose a warm place for their retreat, some sun to enjoy and a languorous city in Italy (which the author leaves 'nameless', perhaps not to distract readers who have visited Venice with the city's similarities). Once there, Mary and Colin plan to rest for a few days, without any real motivation to explore their new surroundings, or go on some daily sight-seeing. From the beginning of the narration and their exchanges, they appear to be vaguely depressed and emotionally vulnerable. Shortly after their arrival, and away from their safe, if now stale living environment, a fog of mental disorientation descends upon them at their holiday destination.

Their unconscious purpose for the above short journey, as one among other interpretations, might be to renew their knowledge of each other in a place unfamiliar to either of them, and on neutral territory where they will not run into any friendly faces from home, or circle of acquaintances. At their hotel, they immediately fall into a routine of sleeping most of the day with the comfort of physical love at times, while after the ritual of dressing for the evening, they interpret their dreams to each other, sitting out on their balcony before going out to dinner. The element of time is also placed on hold during this vacation, and when finally venturing out too late one night, they soon lose their sense of direction and bearings. The maps they acquire from sullen vendors only lead them further astray into small narrow dark cobbled streets where tension rises as they are unable to find a place to eat, and hunger eventually has them walking in slow motion, feeling light-headed and tired. They are lost, and perhaps in more ways than one.

The reader here might wonder how one would react if in this desultory scenario, all of a sudden the figure of a flashy dubious-looking man emerged from the dark shadows into the street light, and blocked one's way while extending a hand in friendship, speaking fluently one's language. Colin and Mary, both instinctively with polite dislike and mistrust, attempt to swerve from this stranger's strong clasping embrace and keep going, while the older man introducing himself as 'Robert', pulls them back boisterously into a seedy smoke-filled basement bar with a loud jukebox down the street, and rough sullen and silent younger men sitting around, dressed like himself. He produces some strong native wine which goes right to their heads, and before long they are feeling somewhat more relaxed and at ease, a pair of tourists enjoying some local flavor, asking questions of their whereabouts, and finally listening to this animated stranger tell them of his early childhood, which becomes increasingly grotesque and revolting in the relaying. By the time he mentions the name of his wife Caroline, a Canadian woman, and their house nearby, the couple are in an exhausted drunken stupor and have started nodding off (some readers, however, may be wide awake at this point, feeling repulsion, incredulous and debating whether to continue this story of theirs, or to set it aside). When the bar finally closes, Mary and Colin wander off staggering into the quiet night, sit down for a moment on some stone steps and fall into a deep sleep leaning against each other. To their minds, nothing really matters after all, because they are on a floating agenda and the sentence, 'Remember We're on Holiday', is a recurring one they often exchange, offering them solace at the beginning of this nightmare which sets the tone for their journey into a darkening web of mystery, danger and intrigue.

When they awake in the small street in the early morning with blood-shot eyes and plans to return to the hotel, first going in search for water to soothe their parched thirst, they end up instead in a large city square, sitting impatiently at one of the tables for a waiter from the outdoor café to serve them. After a few minutes, they see the infamous Robert, distinctive in his white suit, standing at a distance with his camera and a cigarette, and while they attempt to shield their faces in the midst of the many other patrons, he starts walking briskly up to them, arms wide open and calling out 'My Friends!, and here the plot really begins.

What happens next might be the graphic description of how a lost traveling couple find themselves easy prey to this older married couple, Robert and Caroline, who have a distinct violent and bizarre plan of their own, unknown to their victims and the readers of 'Comfort', while Mary is taken a psychological hostage under the crippled wing of the abused perverse Caroline, and her dangerous husband proceeds literally to knock out any fighting spirit left in the weakened Colin, reducing him into traumatic submission. The young couple are now effectively 'separated' by the other one, and the lines of tacit communication between them are down. By the time the author offers his characters some escape routes, Mary and Colin are addressing each other on their visit pleasantly as lovers and friends, where a note of formality has crept in between them, keeping them closer and yet further apart.

While this short novel of a pair of tourists navigating far beyond the realm of realities, and its theme of depravity unbearable to digest for some, it may bring to mind a passage in one's youth when some of us were apt to take more chances, the world was friendlier and the atmosphere felt safer when venturing out under the sheltering sun. It is one of those rare books that one might wish to address again at a later age, and is definitely not for the antelope-souls among our midst. For this reader, it falls within the category of exquisitely sinister and psychological classics of its kind, and is an elegant feat on the author's part. 'The Comfort of Strangers' came to mind here once again when a friend who just arrived in Italy was describing the other day first impressions of the outskirts of a well-known city, and although one can become unwillingly mesmerized in the reading of this novel, it is not one easily recommended to others, but rather one that might prefer to keep to oneself with personal reflections and memories of youthful times past.

What an inane piece of garbage!
By Cino
I can't believe I spent nearly nine bucks to read such garbage! I hadn't read anything by McEwan yet and now I really wonder how is it possible that the guy sells his writing. Rarely I have encountered such lack of direction such absence of definition of the characters and their actions such inane plot such boring descriptions of meaningless details such absurd behaviors such unbelievable progress of time and such astronomical nonsense as Orion in the summer sky.
I would save however a brief paragraph with the description of an infant in a pram in St. Mark's square which truly is a masterpiece. But I would have spared myself all else in this book and would not have spent that money for one paragraph.

TERMINALLY VAPID & BORING
By Elizabeth A. McBurney
It was one of the worst books I've read in years. I didn't even read the whole thing. Finally skipped to the last pages, found out how it ended - just as I thought it would. The characters were vapid, unlikable and terminally boring. The circumstances of their lives were meaningless and it was no surprise that they attracted the most unattractive of couples on the most boring (they slept alot) of vacations. I wouldn't even give this one star if I could get away with it. This book is simply awful

It's no secret that these hard times have been even harder for the Black community.

Approximately 35 percent of African Americans had no measurable assets in 2009, and 24 percent of these same households had only a motor vehicle. Dennis Kimbro, observing how the weight of the continuing housing and credit crises disproportionately impacts the African-American community, takes a sharp look at a carefully cultivated group of individuals who've scaled the heights of success and how others can emulate them. Based on a seven year study of 1,000 of the wealthiest African Americans, The Wealth Choice offers a trove of sound and surprising advice about climbing the economic ladder, even when the odds seem stacked against you. Readers will learn about how business leaders, entrepreneurs, and celebrities like Bob Johnson, Spike Lee, L. A. Reid, Herman Cain, T. D. Jakes and Tyrese Gibson found their paths to wealth; what they did or didn't learn about money early on; what they had to sacrifice to get to the top; and the role of discipline in managing their success. Through these stories, which include men and women at every stage of life and in every industry, Dennis Kimbro shows readers how to:

· Develop a wealth-generating mindset and habits

· Commit to lifelong learning

· Craft goals that match your passion
· Make short-term sacrifices for long-term gain
· Take calculated risks when opportunity presents itself

From Booklist
Whatever the circumstances of an individual’s life—disadvantages of race, social status, or economic climate—wealth is a choice, argues Kimbro as he explores the lives of several successful African Americans to plumb the lessons of achieving wealth. Kimbro offers seven “laws” of wealth, including knowledge as an economic weapon, the importance of resolve, the pursuit of special gifts, and opportunities gained through service. Drawing on seven years of research and interviews with entrepreneurs and celebrities, Kimbro highlights the personality traits and habits that have led them to succeed against great odds. Among his interview subjects are Bob Johnson, Terry McMillan, Spike Lee, T. D. Jakes, and Richard Parsons. Kimbro explores their attitudes and early lessons on money as well as the personal challenges they faced to achieve success. Although targeted at African Americans, readers of all races and ethnicities will appreciate these inspiring stories and insights on overcoming obstacles and achieving wealth. --Vanessa Bush

Excellent! Really helps you see wealth from a different perspective.
By Jen
I had no idea how LONG the book was, and have not read it fully as a result. I rate it 5 stars because I only needed to read the first few chapters to get the benefits. It outlined very clearly about the wealthy and the true principles around creating it. Something many law of attraction books miss is the hard work factor. I also enjoyed the reality of having to make it a choice. After reading it I had a God experience of making that choice, then I had my best month in my baby business ever. I am still getting that choice refined and cultivated and it has not been fun really learning how to pay attention to my money fully and acting frugally. It is a true inner transformation is constantly developing as a result of that choice. To expect it to happen over night, is to set yourself up for failure and a get rich scheme. Not this book, it's exciting to know that I too can be wealthy if I make the choice. In the African American population, I believe it to be a duty!

Review
''I Dared to Call Him Father is a fascinating autobiography that challenged me in my walk with God. How many of us would be true to our faith if we knew that embracing Christianity could be our death sentence?'' --Mary Ann Littrell, Christian Librarian

What happens when I do?

It is the fascinating true story of Bilquis Sheikh, a prominent Muslim woman in South Asia who faced these questions at the crossroads of her life-and found the astonishing answers.

Her entire life turned upside down as a series of strange dreams launched her on a quest that would forever consume her heart, mind and soul.

This 25th anniversary edition contains a new afterword by a Western friend of Bilquis and a new appendix on how the East enriches the West.

In which book do you meet me as your Father?
By Mark Evans
I enjoy reading autobiographies about conversions so that I can understand other religions (In this case Islam.); and I enjoy reading about the moments and decisions that lead to conversion. Bilquis experienced some spiritual oppression. This negative experience led her to the Koran and eventually the Bible. She began to read the Koran and Bible side-by-side. She had a dream about John the Baptist and perfume. She had never read about John the Baptist, yet the name was vivid and clear in her mind. I have read several books sharing the testimonies of converted Muslims. Many of the stories are the same, they experience dreams and visions. This is the earliest account that I have read; Bilquis had her dreams in 1966. Over time she became more persuaded by the Bible. Eventually she spoke with a Western missionary who shared the Gospel and prayed with her. She left without becoming a Christian. Soon later, while reading the Bible, the Holy Spirit led her to conversion. He used Revelation 3:20.

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. Revelation 3:20

Bilquis shares the struggles she faced as a young Christian. She shares the abandonment she felt when her family rejected her. But, she also shares about the friendships and relationships she gained when she became a Christian. I felt convicted as I read about her sensitivity to sin, the Holy Spirit, and His leading. Her friend Synnove Mitchell writes about Bilquis, “She was concerned not only to give her visitors truths about God, but to bring them into the presence of Jesus, the Truth.” P. 185 It is clear to me, Bilquis only wanted to be in continual fellowship with God, and constantly in His presence. I cannot find the words to describe how impressed I am with her testimony. She was so sorry and repentent about her sin: selfishness, pride, arrogance, and unwillingness to forgive. Such sorrow over sin has become rare. Rare in my life.

I am inspired. I nearly made it through the book without crying. I was fine till Synnove shared facts about the funeral, specifically how they sang Bilquis’ favorite hymns. As I read I was particularly moved by the lyrics of one,

"I know not how the Spirit moves, convincing men of sin, revealing Jesus through the Word, creating faith in Him. But I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I’ve committed uno Him against that day."

“I Know Whom I have Believed”

I have sung this song many times without crying, but not today.

I Dared to Call Him Father includes an Epilogue and two appendixes written by Bilquis’ friend Synnove Mitchell. In the first appendix Synnove explains how she first met Bilquis. In the second, she compares and contrasts the culture and attitude of the East with the West. It was interesting to read Synnove’s testimony. She felt spiritually desperate, out of touch with God, and was ready to leave India. She prayed and asked God to revive her passion. Bilquis, unannounced and unexpectedly arrived at Synnove’s door. Both ladies were an answer to the other’s prayer.

You may wonder about the title. When faced with the challenge of knowing which book to follow, the Quran or the Bible, Bilquis asked God “Which one is your book?” She writes, “Then a remarkable thing happened. Nothing like it had ever occurred in my life in quite this way. For I heard a voice inside my being, a voice that spoke to me as clearly as if I was repeating words in my inner mind. they were fresh, full of kindness, yet at the same time full of authority.”

"In which book do you meet me as your Father?" P. 49

More than a conversion story - a school of the Spirit
By Paul B.
This is a compelling story, not only of a Muslim conversion to Christ, but of the Holy Spirit schooling she went through in being led by the Lord. There are a lot of pearls here that will help anyone sense the voice of the Father more clearly amid the confusing situations of life. At points it actually reminded me of Brother Lawrence's classic Practicing the Presence of God.

The story is hard to put down, and it ends too abruptly - and too soon. I wished there was more on Bilquis' life after her emigration. But there is an interesting postscript by the missionary wife who was instrumental in helping Bilquis find the Lord. It speaks of the differences between Eastern and Western culture, and how central honor is to the East. We need to give this serious consideration, because it is a key to escaping the legalism that drives much Western religious interpretations. If our primary motivation is to honor God, we need not sweat the small stuff.

If anything, the persecution of Christians in Muslim lands has become worse since the time this book describes. We need to keep our brothers in prayer. There are many videos online and books here at Amazon that document conversion stories similar to this one, many of them complete with dreams and visions that drew persons to Christ. This points to another difference between East and West: the East is less confident on man's intellectual understanding, and more open to the leading of the spirit.

Highly recommended.

I don't know what to say...
By Angeliki
...after reading this Muslim lady's conversion story and her walk with Jesus, I can write a book myself about how jealous I am with her relationship with the LORD. In a way I can relate to her and her relationship with her family after she became Christian. I've been highlighting this book all over. I've been saying out loud to myself: "Wow, I want that". Besides being jealous of her I didn't want the book to end. When I was reading it however, I couldn't put it down -LOL- I mean she would literally talk and walk with JESUS. Sometimes I'm glad I'm alone because He and I will have conversations going - LOL- so I can see that with her. The decisions she'd make they were because that's what He told her and she just so happened to find them in the Bible!!! Like her Christmas list for example!! Or He'd show her through a dream what would happen about an event later on, or warn her about her safety!!! And if it wasn't the Bible she got he message from, then it was through HIS Presence, and with my eyes as big as silver dollars, again I find me saying "aaaah, that's what I want not only sometimes but 24/7." I. Can't. WAIT to meet her and the rest of my Middle Eastern family. The book ends with notes and more details from the missionaries who took her under their wings. And there I read the difference between the East and the West. They'll be late to go to wedding in order to honor and visit with an unexpected person who just happened to be in the hood and wanted to stop by and say "hello". And while I'm highlighting I say to myself "I know it, and I miss that relationship with friends and neighbors in this country. We used to drop in to people's homes unexpectedly, or people would come to our home unexpectedly and in both cases we'd drink coffee, but that's non existent anymore in the States :( like I said, I can write a book about this book and how much it inspired me. LOL
