Presentation of actual written material from Usui's classes, with Petter's analysis and explanation
By Jacobus deRottmann
I already had a paper copy of this book and bought the Kindle version, well, frankly because I misplaced it. This slim-looking volume is a treasure to anyone involved or even interested in Reiki. As a Master level Reiki, I want it nearby at all times, and to study it often.
The cover of the book lists Dr. Mikao Usui and Frank Arjava Petter as authors. The Amazon article lists Usui and Christine M. Grimm as authors and leaves Petter out entirely, which is incorrect. Grimm did a wonderful TRANSLATION from GERMAN to English. Frank and others including his wife Chetna (who is Japanese) translated the Japanese material, originally to Frank's native German.
Dr. Mikao Usui was the founder of modern Reiki, which deals with Chi or Ki but is specifically devoted to healing and has safety measures built in to prevent harm (Chi Gong is powerful, but has martial disciplines as well as healing ones). It had been believed by many that none of his material was written down and that he only taught orally and somewhat secretively. It is no coincidence that this book revealing otherwise has a Forward by William Lee Rand, who researched Usui's life and practice in Japan and himself dispelled many fallacies concerning Usui. Rand founded the Karuna Reiki discipline and has done much to shine light on the subject of Reiki in the West.
To be clear, "The Original Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui" is really more the inclusion and subject matter of the book, a research project of Frank Arjava Petter and his wife Chetna. Petter lives, practices and teaches Reiki in Japan - the first Westerner to do so. He gives us some of the historical and Buddhist background of Usui. This book has quite a bit of analytical and anecdotal material by Petter, and all of it is valuable, especially his elegant exposition of Reiki meditation. Simple and profound, that part alone would be worth the price of the book.
However, as advertised, it does include translated material from Usui's handbook, with photo illustrations done by Petter using a professional model and showing hand positions, et cetera, as well as some descriptive artwork. Petter states in the Introduction though that this is a SECTION of the handbook. So I expect there will be further presentations of the remainder of the Usui materials provided to Petter by the legendary Japanese healer Oishi.
Petter points out that the Western hand positions are a simple subset of a greater variety of positions shown in the Usui materials. They are not wrong, there are simply more. And there are more ways of focusing Reiki power than those. Touch is ONE tool of several, depending on the patient's needs and condition. But they are an important one. The Handbook lists maladies with the specific positions to treat them, along with observations of other considerations by Petter along the way.
I could go on and on about this book, but if you are into Reiki and interested in the actual details including what Usui taught, buy it.
At the risk of sounding trite, it's awesome.

If you love Reiki as much as I do you'll take a gander. Enjoy!!
By CoRonaSue
Okay, so I really was just expecting to have like another journal or book with more background info on Reiki. More info other than what we get in our lesson books. So when the small book arrived I skimmed through it and see many. I mean many photo illustrations showing you more direct hand positions for a wide variety of physical and health wise ailments. Like asthma, coughing, arthritis and so on. The book has all photos numbered and when you're looking up specifics for say example asthma it'll direct you to the recommended Reiki symbol to be used and or the proposed hand positions via which exact photo to look at. Just all good info to have.

Systematic, "Hands-on" Guide to Usui Reiki Ryoho
By Daniel & Kara Jordan
This book provides grounded, practical techniques that are clearly rooted in the systematic method presented by Usui-sensei. You will not find much to help you in this book if you are looking for a more shamanic or intuitive approach to Reiki, but it is excellent if you are hoping to find a step by step guidebook. I would highly recommend this work for level one practitioners or for those who have trouble sensing energy, because the approach presented relies on method over any innate or trained sensitivity on the part of the practitioner.

Lies We Believe About God, by Wm. Paul Young

From the author of the twenty million plus copy bestselling novel The Shack and the New York Times bestsellers Cross Roads and Eve comes a compelling, conversational exploration of the wrong-headed ideas we sometimes have and share about God.

Wm. Paul Young has been called a heretic for the ways he vividly portrays God’s love through his novels. Here he shares twenty-eight commonly uttered and sometimes seemingly innocuous things we say about God. Paul exposes these as lies that keep us from having a full, loving relationship with our Creator.

With personal anecdotes and sharing the compassion readers felt from the “Papa” portrayed in The Shack—now a major film starring Sam Worthington and Octavia Spencer—Paul encourages readers to think anew about important issues including sin, religion, hell, politics, identity, creation, human rights, and helping us discover God’s deep and abiding love.

Lies We Believe About God 1 “God loves us, but doesn’t like us.”
It is the middle of winter in northern Alberta, Canada. The temperature is well below zero, one of those days that is so cold your nose hairs feel like little sticks plugging up your nostrils and every exhalation of breath becomes its own fogbank. I was born not too far from this city, up in the northern prairies.

“At least it’s a dry cold,” someone offers, which is true, but not that comforting.

We enter the building and I unwrap the layers of protection, trading them for the warmth of this place of incarceration. We are visiting a women’s prison. The women who have asked me to come and speak said that dozens of copies of The Shack have been making the rounds and having an impact. The government has given these inmates a “time-out,” an invitation to think about their lives and choices, something that people outside these walls have little opportunity to do. These women are here today to spend an hour with me, by their own choosing. Their presence is a gift.

Those who have eyes to see will find much wonder beneath tough exteriors and callous hearts. Most of the women are here because of a relationship gone wrong, and their suffered betrayals and losses are visible in their bluster of defiance or barely concealed shame. I feel quite at home here, among the bruised and wounded. These are my people, our people.

I don’t remember what I talked about. It probably had to do with the prisons in my own life, places that became precious to me because they were all I knew. About how we hold on to the certainty of our pain rather than take the risk of trusting anyone ever again. Deeply wounded souls in the room began to weep. Bruce Cockburn, the Canadian poet and musician, would call these “rumours of glory.” Lost coins, lost sheep, lost sons, but not just any. These are my sons, my sheep, and my coins.

I finish my talk and only a few leave. Others wait to have me sign a book. I hug everyone, which I am certain is a violation of all sorts of rules. But I have been breaking such codes for a while, and no one ever interferes with these sacred encounters. A woman stands waiting, her body tense with emotion. When I simply take her in my arms, it is as if I set off a charge that lets the dam burst. She sobs uncontrollably, for minutes. I whisper that it is okay, that I have other shirts, that I have her and she is safe. I can’t comprehend all the misery and humanity that is flooding through this one small touch, but it is real and visceral and wrenching.

Finally, she stops the heaving enough to find some words.

“Do you really think,” she whispers in short bursts, “that Papa is fond of me?”

And there it is, the question. This tender human being is entrusting me with this monumental question. Even those who don’t believe that God exists are desperate to know that love does and that love knows who we are. More, we are driven from within to take the risk to ask of someone or Someone, Do you find anything in me that is lovable, that is enough, that is worthy of being loved?

There is a scene in The Shack in which the main character, Mackenzie, is having his assumptions challenged. Mack is face-to-face with Sophia, the Wisdom of God, and she is asking him about the love he has for his children. In particular, she asks which of his five children he loves the most.

Even moderately healthy parents would tell you this question is impossible to answer. My wife, Kim, and I have six children. When our eldest was born, we couldn’t imagine ever having the capacity to love another child. Our first used it all up. But then our second arrived, and suddenly there was a new depth of love that either hadn’t existed or had been dormant before his arrival. It is as if each child brings with him or her a gift of love that is deposited into the hearts of the parents.

In the religious subculture in which I was raised, we all knew that God is love. We said it and sang it all the time, until it didn’t mean that much. It was simply the way that God is. It is like the grandchild who says, “But you have to love me. You’re my gramps.”

But saying “God is love” doesn’t capture our question, does it? So I’ve made a habit of rephrasing the line “God loves you,” and instead of making it about God, I make it about the object of God’s relentless affection—us. So throughout The Shack, Papa would say, “I am especially fond of her or him.” There is a world of difference between saying “I love you,” which is about me, and saying “I am especially fond of you,” which is about you. Both are correct, but the latter somehow pierces the disquiet of our souls and says, “Yes, I know you love me, but do you know me and do you like me? You love because that is the way you are, but is there anything about me that is worth loving? Do you ‘see’ me, and do you like what you ‘see’?”

“Do you really think,” she whispers in short bursts, “that Papa is fond of me?”

I squeeze her tight. “Yes,” I whisper back as we both dissolve into torrents of tears. “Papa is especially fond of you!”

Minutes later she regains a semblance of emotional control and looks up into my face for the first time.

“That’s all I needed to know. That’s all I needed to know.”

With another hug, she exits, leaving me thinking, Darlin’, that is all any of us needs to know!

Truth Is An Elusive Thing
By Todd E. Hepp
Lies We Believe About God is creating a stir. Martin Luther listed 95 Theses. Paul Young only lists 28 Lies. You would be hard-pressed to find another product on Amazon with so evenly divided between 5-star and 1-star ratings, and nothing in between. Rotate the familiar yellow bar graph 90 degrees and it looks like football goalposts (or some would say devil horns). Black-and-white polarization is a sign of the times. America is divided again. If there's no such thing as bad publicity, then God must be pleased by controversy the book is generating.

I hail from Tennessee, the Scopes Monkey Trial state. The hoopla back then (1925) was about denial of the biblical origin of life (Creationism) and teaching evolution (Darwinism). Now it's about denial of biblical orthodoxy and embracing universalism. Boiled to their essence, both disputes test presuppositions regarding the authority of the Bible (i.e., "God's Word" as inerrantists call it). Both disputes are showcased in movies, albeit separated by 57 years. I enjoyed The Shack (Sam Worthington) as much as Inherit The Wind (Spencer Tracy).

When I read the 1-star reviews I'm reminded of that scene in Inherit The Wind when the alarmed townspeople, protest-signs in hand, march around singing Give Me That Old-Time Religion. When I read the 5-star reviews I wonder the same thing I did when the credits rolled for The Shack. As I walked into the theater's parking lot, I said to my wife, "What did God do with Missy's killer?" That seems to be the rub. Nobody should get away with murder. There's no shame in wanting justice; for him or me.

For a religion to succeed, apparently it needs a hell to fear more than a heaven to enjoy. And to read the comments, not just some annihilation kind of hell where everything just goes black, but a perpetual-pitchfork-'n-the-rear hell, a place of eternal conscious torment. Orthodox religion presumes people must be incentivized by reward/punishment to live right. Paul Young holds a higher view, as do I. Don't so-called atheists commit less crimes than Christians? That's odd.

I'm going to break new ground and give Lies We Believe About God 3-stars. On the downside, it's too brief, too shallow. and omits dozens more lies that should have been included. The book doesn't touch topics such as eschatology, militarism, feminism, or homosexuality. On the upside, it gets people thinking outside the numbing narrowness of their indoctrination and group-think conditioning. The book is a great discussion starter. I'd give The Shack 5-stars hands down. Fiction is harder to write, but what non-fiction books lack in character development and plot must be made up in depth of research.

I will not repeat the commentary I posted in other threads on this forum, but if there is one component sorely missing in all the what-happens-to-us-when-we-die salvation schemes (e.g., unconditional election/damnation, free-will altar-call decisions, or all good dogs go to heaven-ism) its justice, not grace. Deep inside, above all else, we want a God who is fair, because life isn't. We yearn for a corrections institute in-the-sky (e.g., purgatory, a restorative hell, rehabilitation, and yes, some form of do-the-crime-do-the-time punishment). We want justice, not pardons. Soteriology should be 50 shades of gray because life is too. We want proportionality. God's all-knowingness is equal to the task of being a perfectly fair judge of our lives. God is an irresistible beacon to our souls that draws us in...all of us...even the most recalcitrant...eventually. That's a beautiful thought, even if it is unbiblical according to some people. I only care what's true. Who knows?

The familiar judged-once-to-heaven-or-hell-forever model pitched by religion is overly simplistic, cynically gamed, and irrationally feared. Paul Young's theology takes religion out of the loop. The lucrative religion industry stands to lose customers. Ouch! No wonder they're up in arms. The Nones and Dones are the fastest growing category. Can you skip church altogether and still go to heaven? Is Gandhi in heaven? Is it how well you love, or affirming correct doctrines that matters to God? One day, we'll see, we'll see.

Jesus flattened hierarchies. Human institutions build them back. We're all about power over others, establishing pecking orders, forming cliques, collecting dues, having our egos stroked, assuaging guilty consciences, defining them versus us, always looking to exclude rather than include. Paul Young seems above the fray. His worldview is more horizontal than vertical. He's relational...egalitarian. I love that. I hope he writes a sequel to The Shack.

26 out of 28 Stars?
By Matthew Rose
Below I will share my overall thoughts on WM. Paul Young's book Lies We Believe About God in summary format. I will utilize a green light, yellow light, red light format in my critique.

Green Light (Stuff I really liked....GO!)

1. The Tone- I liked the humble tone of the introduction (and carried through to the rest of the book). Young is not being dogmatic. He is sharing his thoughts. He is creating questions which are, of course, healthy to discuss.

2. The Jesus Centered Approach- In theory, this is the right approach. I think Young attempted to keep Jesus at the center. But that's not as easy as one might think. At times it seemed that Young might be leaning more on a certain interpretation of Paul or even certain statements of Jesus (while ignoring others). But overall, I appreciate the Jesus centered approach.

3. Emphasis on Genesis 1- I like that Young talked about the inherent goodness of humanity. We need more voices that take Genesis 1 and the anthropological predecessor to Genesis 3.

4. A Non-Controlling God- Young is right, it seems to me, to move away from meticulous sovereignty and toward a God who is purposefully non-controlling. Surprisingly, it seemed that Young departed from this a bit in the chapter about coincidences, but overall I thought he was solid on this point. I'd be interested to know what Young would think of the work of Thomas Jay Oord.

5. Caution Toward Religion- Young stated that Jesus came to end religion in a very real sense. I agree.

6. God and Gender- I never had a problem with Young's portrayal of the Trinity in The Shack so far as it concerns gender. In this book, he does a good job of stating his view. I concur.

7. Magic Christianity- I think Young did a very good job of describing how some Christians have a magical view of faith and performance. This is something I come across in local church ministry quite often.

8. Sex- I think was on point in the chapter on God's relationship to sexuality.

9. Politics- With the exception of not fleshing out (or even mentioning) Romans 13, I think Young did a great job of discussing the Christian relationship to the state (especially considering how short a space he devoted to this).

10. Hell- As someone who wrote a thesis paper on hell, I felt Young's treatment of the subject was fair. I don't agree with his view (Christian Universalism), but I don't consider it heretical either.

11. Atonement- I think Young did a good job of critiquing some forms of penal substitution theory that pit God the Father against the Son.

12. Trinity- I appreciated and share Young's thoughts on the Trinity. I do believe that 'God is love' is a true statement because God is a plurality of unified persons. It's wonderful to know that love is at the very core of reality.

Yellow Light (Stuff I'd be cautious about... SLOW DOWN!)

1. View of the Fall- I was not thoroughly convinced that Young had a thoroughgoing view of the depth of human depravity. His best statement of it was in chapter 22, but overall he seemed to view the human condition as one where our goodness is just buried deep inside us rather than that it is actually distorted.

2. Christian Universalism- I consider General Universalism to be heresy, but I wouldn't say this about Christian Universalism. In the latter, I would distinguish between dogmatic universalism and hopeful universalism. Young seems basically certain that all will be saved. I would be more open to hopeful universalism. I actually think Young's certainty on this point goes against some of his basic operating principles.

3. Unclear Writing and/or Thinking- On a number of points, Young's position is either unclear or doesn't make sense to me. For instance, he says that our salvation is secure, but that participation in it is necessary. I'm not sure how those statements could both be true. He seems sure that all will be saved, but emphasizes the importance and eternal nature of the gift of free will. Again, those statements seem to exist in some degree of tension. On the problem of pain, Young says God is able to intervene miraculously, but doesn't usually do this. Nevertheless, Young says he would if he were able. He leans on mystery here, I guess. The coincidence chapter didn't seem to fit with some of his other thinking. You can't really say God doesn't control stuff (when talking about bad stuff especially) and then say He's behind every detail (when talking about the good stuff).

Red Light (Stuff I didn't like... STOP!)

1. We're Already Saved- I don't think Young is right about this. I think he has focused on a possible interpretation of some verses at the expense of both better interpretations of said passages AND the context of those passages AND a multitude of other verses that suggest otherwise. I don't think this is just semantics. There is truth in telling fellow Christians that they need to keep their new reality (they are a new creation!) in mind, but it's inappropriate, in my view, to say the same to non-Christians (for they are not yet a New Creation). What needs to happen in the life of a non-follower of Jesus isn't simply to stop believing lies. They need to come to The Truth (Jesus).

2.We're All God's Children- Much the same here. I think Young was wrong to ignore the necessary nuance on this point. He literally dismissed the opportunity to add good nuance (top of 205). It is true that we are all children of God in the sense that we are all God's creation. It is also true that we are all loved by God. But it is not true in every sense that everyone is a child of God. And some of those senses are important (life and death stuff).

Overall, I thought the book had (much) much more true teaching than false teaching (from my perspective). Specifically, I think Young is wrong to label the following statements as lies:

Chapter 13 "You need to get saved"
Chapter 24 "Not everyone is a child of God"

That's not to say that everything Young says in those chapters is wrong. It's just to say that I think there is actually more truth in the supposed 'lie' than there is in his rebuttal.

Book Should Be Entitled "What Paul Young Believes"
By John G. Sheryl
While some of the anecdotes Young related in the book were interesting--and some were even touching--this book should be re-titled, "What I Believe". This book has nothing to do with biblical truth--only with what Paul Young believes. It is, in that sense, a very narcissistic book, and is not at all true to what the Bible teaches about God, or anything having to do with biblical truth.

Elsewhere, the author has confessed that he was sexually abused by the natives (the Dani tribe) that he grew up with in New Guinea; however, in the chapter (about the "lie"), "God Is a Prude," he doesn't mention this incident; and, instead, seems to view their blatant sexuality as a healthy thing, in contrast to the supposedly prudishness of us (Westerners ???). Thus, he almost seems to justify their sexual abuse also.

His appendix, which he calls a "Catena" lists Scriptures which he believes support his blatant (and confessed) universalism; however, he not only yanks the Scriptures he cites out of their proper context (e. g., citing John 3:16-17--which could indicate universalism, if unqualified by verse 18, which clearly opposes universalism! Or 2 Cor. 5:19, without also quoting verse 20; which, again, militates against this view); he also actually, at times, changes the Scripture--such as his changing the pronoun "you" to "we" in Ephesians 2:8, because he believes it helps his case for universalism.

His Bonhoeffer quotes in his "Final Word" at the end of his book are also incorrectly cited--both as far as the page numbers in the edition he cites; and also he paraphrases, rather than giving a verbatim rendering.

Young doesn't seriously interact with any views that would oppose his own. Instead of the book being a "dialogue," it is a self-centered monologue, and will only be of any interest to readers of "The Shack," who want to know what the author of "The Shack" really believes. I say this, partly because he actually mentions or discusses "The Shack" in at least 13 of the book's 28 chapters; I counted). It does somewhat accomplish that purpose. (I have written a more extensive critique of "Lies" elsewhere).

If you want to discover actual lies about God, don't read this book. Instead, to see what God is really like, read the Bible and look at the life of Jesus: Jesus said, "He who has seen Me has seen the Father." (John 14:9) and "If you had known Me, you would have known my Father also" (John 14:7; see also John 8:19).

Private Equity as an Asset Class, by Guy Fraser-Sampson

Unfairly reviled, and much misunderstood, private equity differs from all other asset classes in various important respects, not least the way in which its fund mechanisms operate, and the way in which its returns are recorded and analysed. Sadly, high level asset allocation decisions are frequently made on the basis of prejudice and misinformation, rather than a proper appreciation of the facts.

Guy Fraser-Sampson draws upon more than twenty years of experience of the private equity industry to provide a practical guide to mastering the intricacies of this highly specialist asset class. Aimed equally at investors, professionals and business school students, it starts with such fundamental questions as ’what is private equity?’ and progresses to detailed consideration of different types of private equity activity such as venture capital and buyout.

Rapid and significant changes in the environment during the recent financial crisis have prompted the need for a new edition. Separate chapters have been added on growth and development capital, as well as secondary investing. Newly emergent issues are considered, such as lengthening holding periods and the possible threat of declining returns. Particular problems, such as the need to distinguish between private equity and hedge funds, are addressed. The glossary has also been expanded. In short, readers will find that this new edition takes their understanding of the asset class to new heights.

Key points include:

  • A glossary of private equity terms

  • Buyout
  • Growth capital
  • Development capital

A well-written, comprehensive, and practical overview of the private equity field
By Vasiliy Zhulin
Guy Fraser-Sampson does an outstanding job in introducing the world of private equity in this book. He starts off defining various concepts in this field, explaining the ways to analyze private equity returns and distinguishing between buyouts and venture capital. He follows with a comprehensive discussion of buyouts (including the various types of buyouts, analysis models, and historical buyout returns) and then an equally thorough investigation of venture capital (with a similar structure to that in the buyouts section). Mr. Fraser-Sampson wraps up with a discussion on due diligence and advice on planning your own investment program in private equity.

I greatly enjoyed the book. It is easy to read, and Mr. Fraser-Sampson presents the concepts in a clear and simple manner - suitable for readers completely new to private equity. I like that the author is unafraid to express his own opinions - whether on the state of transparency in the field, on future buyout returns in Europe, or on usefulness of anti-trust legislation. He furthermore makes sure to separate his thoughts from the pure factual data that he provides to support them.

Interestingly, the book does not simply focus on private equity in one area of the world - the United States. It also covers Europe and sometimes ventures (no pun intended) into other parts of the globe, which I think is a breath of fresh air from the typical finance books that concentrate on US markets only. I am pleased to see this, as I strongly feel that a world-wide outlook is very important in the business world today. And, as Mr. Fraser-Sampson concludes himself, we can learn good lessons by examining the state of the private equity field in various geographic locations: "However, history is cyclical and I now see exactly the same sorts of issues which plagued continental Europe in the past rearing their heads anew in developing private equity areas such as Asia and Latin America. For those in such places who are willing to listen, the European experience has some valuable lessons" (61).

I applaud the author for the amount of historical data present throughout the book - both scattered throughout the text and assembled into tables and diagrams. While most of the data comes from a single source (the VentureXpert system) and the author's own calculations based on that data, it is great to see the general trends in buyout and venture capital returns, fund sizes, etc. I also appreciate that, in a few places, Mr. Fraser-Sampson notes that some of the data may not be very reliable since it is new (which is especially important to the private equity field due to the J-curve phenomenon: fresh data often captures the state of the things on the downward portion of the curve). There is, however, one aspect of history that I would have liked to see represented more. It would have been nice to see several examples of interesting or famous buyouts and venture deals, together with their defining characteristics. While many examples are very briefly touched on, none are really explored in detail. For example, I was pretty surprised that, amidst an extensive description of buyout mechanics, there wasn't any mention of the RJR Nabisco LBO in the late 1980s, to which the author could apply, for instance, his discussion of various levels of debt when dealing with huge transactions.

Some neat small features in this work include concise chapter summaries and a glossary at the end of the book. Little things like that make it easier to reinforce concepts and look them up later. I found the chapter summaries especially helpful - each time I read a chapter summary, I was pleasantly surprised on how concisely and accurately it summed up the important ideas presented earlier. Also useful is the practical advice found in the last two chapters of the book - what a fund or company investor should look for when performing due diligence and how to actually plan your private equity investments program (with an emphasis on the Total Return outlook).

Finally, I'd like to mention something about the author himself. I was confused about one of the diagrams in the book (the one on p. 87, featuring the second scenario in analyzing a buyout return), and I e-mailed Mr. Fraser-Sampson with some questions. He replied almost immediately, clarifying the circumstances around the scenario and thanking me for bringing it to his attention, noting that he will make things more explicit in the next edition (strictly speaking, in the diagram on p. 87, the $20M value under "Yr2" is not a cashflow, since no recapitalization took place - debt was simply reduced without an outflow of equity; this hence technically lowers the shown IRR of 124% to 89%). Not only was Mr. Fraser-Sampson helpful, but he was also just very friendly and approachable. That really tops everything for me... I've e-mailed multiple authors before and have received no responses, yet Mr. Fraser-Sampson responded so quickly. I think it's fantastic when readers can ask an author to clarify concepts and receive insightful answers and comments. It brings the book to an entirely new, higher level.

The only problems I have with this book stem from the fact that I want to see more. Specifically, I would have liked to see the math behind the calculations in some of the numbers that the author presents. I also found myself looking up a lot of extra information outside the book about the IRR - how it is calculated and used. A more in-depth, separate section on IRR would have been great (the author does mention how the money multiple drives the IRR and not vice versa throughout various sections of the book, but a more consolidated discussion would have, in my opinion, been more helpful).

These are very minor cons, and some may argue that they aren't really cons at all, but rather an indication that the author did a splendid job in making me interested in the field of private equity. He wishes to keep his analyses and explanations simple and understandable without burdening the reader with hefty calculations or overly advanced topics. I can certainly respect that. But the absence of this information keeps the reader more at a "birds-eye view" level without allowing him/her to dig deeper into certain concepts. This is just something to keep in mind. In a strict classroom setting for a private equity course, this book would work well as a textbook when complemented by some sort of workbook with detailed analysis models and problems.

In conclusion, this book is an excellent introduction to the world of private equity. I knew very little about this field before reading this work, and I feel that it has given me an excellent well-rounded overview. The book is thorough, yet easy to read and understand. When the only cons I can think of are really just me wanting to learn more, there's not much else I can say about the book other than to highly recommend it to those new to the private equity field.

Pros:
+ clear and comprehensive presentation of the concepts
+ a more complete world-wide view on private equity, compared to most other books
+ lots of historical data on various aspects of buyouts and venture capital
+ great concise summaries at the end of each chapter and a glossary at the end of the book
+ practical advice in due diligence and planning your private equity investment program
+ the author himself is very responsive and helpful

Cons:
- could use more detailed analyses of real-world examples when discussing the structure and characteristics of buyout and venture capital deals
- no math shown for calculating many of the values presented
- lacks an in-depth discussion of advanced topics like the various uses of IRR and how to calculate it

Provides essential info to understand investing at early stages or enjoy Shark Tank show.
By dw
As a former high level executive that invested millions for large corporations, I highly recommend this book. As a young analyst, it would have put a lot of language and details regarding the analysis or the company and managing the high level owners of companies in perspective. Worth while reading also for the casual interested in understanding shows like Shark Tank for all those educated in the arts who find business to be so cut-throat. Great book! Well written and easy for novice or professional to understand.

A Decent book - Does the job
By E. Tiemroth
This book does a competent job of giving an overview of private equity sufficient for the stated purpose of helping investors understand where it might fit in a portfolio of investments. The book won't prepare you to start your own private equity fund, but it will prepare you to fend-off investment advisors that want to push an unsuitable investment into your portfolio. The writing style is a bit "British" - wordy by American usage standards - but it's their language, isn't it? That being said, the book overall is concise and mercifully short.

"Christian author Gary Chapman applies his groundbreaking thinking on love to single people. In an immensely satisfying lesson, he explains that the love languages are not just skills but expressions of a deep human need to give ourselves fully to another person—even after the initial bliss ends. Offering many sophisticated insights and suggestions along the way, he explains the five languages, shows how they play out for single people at various life stages, and extends the lesson to friendships, work relationships, and personal success. Chris Fabry's reading is natural and appealing. By kelly Groce
It is definitely a good book for couples and it has improved my relationship with my wife. If nothing else it shows you what things your partner is really looking for out of their spouse. I quickly found that my love language was "Acts of Service". Though it might not be sexy or macho to say that, it means more to me to have the dishes and laundry done when I come home after work or have minor home improvements taken care of before I get home. My wife and I have 2 small children and our house is hard to stay clean because every room feels like a mess. We do clean it all the time but it feels like a losing battle. My wife's love language is "Words of Affirmation". As you can tell from all these Amazon reviews I am much more of a writer than I am a talker. My wife is always looking for me to say how much I love and appreciate her because I don't say it often enough.

A big part of improving your relationship with your spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend is to sticking with a date night to make sure you have quality time together. Especially if you have children or a high stress occupation. My wife and I have been together for 10 years and got stuck in the rut of an endless routine of doing everything we could for our kids, followed by daily chores and left little time for ourselves. Committing to 1 date night a week has really helped our relationship and improved our communication.

I recommend the book for sure and found it inspiring and worth reading. All couples can benefit from reading this book. The only downside is I wish it could have been a little longer. The stories from the author are interesting and I would have liked to have heard a bunch of his other examples of couples that he has dealt with. It was a short book and my wife and I finished it in 4 or 5 days and that was reading it slowly. The price is easily affordable. I found it best to photo copy the test quiz at the end instead of writing in the book so we can give the book to any family or friends who are struggling with their relationship.

The Five Love Languages
By Robert Herschede
I originally stumbled upon the concept of the five love languages when I read The 5 Love Languages for Singles. As I read, I experienced a eureka moment. I was used to seeing love only through the lens of my primary love language, but all of a sudden I realized that others were saying I love you... even shouting it... even when I was oblivious to it. I decided to turn to this book now that I am married and wasn't disappointed.

I found the book to be well-written and an easy read, although there were parts of it that were somewhat redundant... especially toward the end. This is the kind of book that the more you put into it, the more you get. Chapman includes exercises at the end of every chapter to help you put into practice the ideas presented. There are also a number of practical tips strewn throughout the text. I found these tips particularly helpful as my spouse's primary love language is foreign to me.

If you're not familiar with the concept of the five love languages, you owe it to yourself to check out one of Chapman's books. It will transform your relationships with anyone who is important to you... spouse, children, friends, family, co-workers, whomever.

Game Changer
By kristin beck
I truly believe everyone could benefit from reading this book, even if you aren't in a relationship! I have learned so much about myself and it has made my relationship so much stronger, I wish I would have bought it sooner. Gary writes in a way that grabs your interest and is so relatable, I would love to read more books by him. Do yourself a favor and give it a shot!

Great book. If you still play West End Games ...
By THE JIT
Great book. If you still play West End Games Star Wars, also know as D6 Star Wars, this is a fantastic book. This book includes all the Force powers a Jedi, or Sith could want. If you don't have this book, get it. This should be one of your top three WEG Star Wars books, after the rule book, in your collection. (The other two being Pirates & Privateers and Gundark's Fantastic Technologies)

All the Force in one :)
By Aaron
Well this one is the clearing house for the force. It has all the powers in one book FINALLY! Has some fun info about running a RPG in the Old Republic era. Or as happens in my game, stuff from the past shows up in the present. My only problem is they never came out with the second supplement with the characters when they were powerful.

Love it but let's make it easier to use.

Enjoy learning but would be a lot easier if decided into 3 parts. 1. Text book. 2. Workbook with worksheets for problems. 3. Answer book with answers. Still enjoy learning but dislike turning to different areas of book.
