About the Author

When he was eleven, Mitchell Hogan was given The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy to read, and a love of fantasy novels was born. He spent the next ten years reading, rolling dice, and playing computer games, with some school and university thrown in. Along the way he accumulated numerous bookcases’ worth of fantasy and sci-fi novels, and he doesn’t look to stop anytime soon. For a decade he put off his dream of writing, then he quit his job and wrote A Crucible of Souls, Book One in the Sorcery Ascendant Sequence. He now writes full-time and is eternally grateful to the readers who took a chance on an unknown self-published author. He lives in Sydney, Australia, with his wife, Angela, and daughter, Isabelle.

or rather I quite like the story
By Amazon Customer
On the one had I quite liket this book, or rather I quite like the story. I was impressed and intrigued by the first book, the second was somewhat disappointing, and this last one.... I don't know. There is a good and interesting story in here, but it feels like the author wanted to write a complex semi dark story, following the latest trends in the genre, and did not quite manage. Often times the character developments seem hasty and forced, and I find it difficult to understand just why certain actions would affect our hero (and others) certain ways. The plot also feels a bit stretched out to me, I feel that these 500 pages could with great benefit be shortened to 350. Making the book a bit faster, although it is not slow exactly. All that said I really enjoyed reading the works of a new author. It really did keep me entertained, and I will continue buying works of this author in the future, because I really do belive he has a future! :)

4.5 out of 5 - Fresh and Immersive with deep characters and a really strong plot
By Donald T.
“A Shattered Empire” is the third and final book in Mitchell Hogan’s Sorcery Ascendant series. As Calden continues to come into his powers, he faces opposition from all sides. The Protectors and Warlocks all want him to be used by and for them. Amerdan is looking for him. The emperor himself has his eye on Calden. Even Gazija and his people need Calden if their plans are to succeed. All Calden wants to do is be left alone and spend his days with Miranda, but deep down he knows that he is meant for something more. The book ends with the eventual showdown between the emperor and his forces versus Kelhak and the Indryllans.

I had some concerns about “A Shattered Empire” after I finished reading the second book in the series “Blood of Innocents”. My fear was that the story that Hogan had set out was bigger than a trilogy. And while I thoroughly enjoyed this third book and the series as a whole, I definitely feel like there should have been at least four books. Hogan did a pretty good job of wrapping up the overall story in this one. There isn’t some terrible cliffhanger at the end or a feeling of dissatisfaction once the story is complete. There are however a lot of things that maybe weren’t given enough time to develop correctly or completely. Calden’s powers for instance, are continually (and conveniently) growing with little work on his part. He just seems to “figure stuff out” on his own where the other sorcerers in the story have had to spend years and years training. Even Gazija, who possesses power beyond anything the world has seen in centuries, seems dumbstruck by an automaton that Calden built in one short scene in the book. Other things that are missing from the story that I think could have been included to make the story better would have been some explanation of Gazija and Quiss’s people. Hogan tells us early on that they are not from this world, but then never goes back to give any more info about it. We’re never told the name of the place they came from, or anything else about their past, their roles since they came here, or what their plans for the future are. Another fairly glaring omission (for me anyway) was the lack of the Dominion game playing a bigger part in the story. After the first book in the series, I was intrigued with that aspect of Hogan’s story and was certain that it would play a prominent part in the series. And while it is mentioned or made reference to several times, it never blossomed into a larger part of the story. And that seems odd after Hogan spent so much time talking about it in book one. Also, what happened to Amerdan’s possessed doll??

Those things aside, the book is still very good. I think most of the characters were believable, and I loved the fact that Hogan never tried to give us a good versus evil climax. It was instead, Calden being forced to choose between the lesser of two evils, all while trying to survive so he could pursue the life he wanted for he and Miranda after all of the dust had settled. I also enjoyed the fact that this series didn’t feel like anything I had read before. I think it’s easy for books (in the fantasy genre in particular) to seem tired and over-done. But Hogan’s story felt fresh and immersive with deep characters and a really strong plot. I would recommend this series without hesitation and would absolutely read Hogan again. A very good trilogy.

Mitchell Hogan is one of my new favorite authors
By Joshua
So I picked up the first book of the Sorcery Ascendant Sequence during a sale on Amazon and it took me a bit to get in to it. Learning the way they do "magic", the different terminology used etc took a bit to grasp. However, once I was in it, I was completely mesmerized. Since then, the second book was released (in 2014, I believe) and now, at long last, the third book is here.

I'll first acknowledge that there are issues with this book. Many other reviewers have covered them so I'll only touch on a few in a general sense.
However, know that these issues do not detract from the enjoyment of the book. Not since the Red Rising series have I been so engrossed in a book. In fact, my wife had to call me out and say "are you really reading your book while walking down the stairs?"

The Good:
Great story telling, Mitchell Hogan takes you on a nice meandering story line, moving in and out of different places and plots throughout the book. There's a sense of camaraderie between certain characters, some are protective of others, some despise others - and Mitchell does a good job of using those emotions.
Some nicely written combat scenes (nothing gruesome), some nice moments where you're wondering "no way this character will overcome this or get out of this situation" etc.
New sorcery and styles of combat are introduced in this book so it's not just a stale rehash of the previous 2 books.
There's more I could say but for the sake of brevity, let's get on with the bad.

The Bad:
As others mention, there are areas that could be improved. Such as - there are more characters in focus in this book than previous ones but some we don't fully get to understand or learn their history, their peoples' history etc. Quiss is one of these.
Other characters are introduced in this book, play a crucial role, then sort of fade away
The ending does wrap up fairly nicely, however in the last couple pages it leaves just enough foreshadowing that it makes you realize a 4th book is entirely possible. And while everything seems to come together, it's abrupt. A certain character is in a certain place but no mention of what that character will do from here on out, for example.
Other characters that meet their demise do so very suddenly. Not that this is necessarily bad, but at times it feels like the author knew he wanted to end the character so he stuck it in wherever he could.

All this to say - my complaints are mostly just personal preferences and did not in any way take away my enjoyment of this book. I highly recommend this whole series as I trust it will be well worth your read.

The first novel in the Iron Druid Chronicles—introducing a cool, new, funny urban fantasy hero

Atticus O’Sullivan, last of the Druids, lives peacefully in Arizona, running an occult bookshop and shape-shifting in his spare time to hunt with his Irish wolfhound. His neighbors and customers think that this handsome, tattooed Irish dude is about twenty-one years old—when in actuality, he’s twenty-one centuries old. Not to mention: He draws his power from the earth, possesses a sharp wit, and wields an even sharper magical sword known as Fragarach, the Answerer.

Unfortunately, a very angry Celtic god wants that sword, and he’s hounded Atticus for centuries. Now the determined deity has tracked him down, and Atticus will need all his power—plus the help of a seductive goddess of death, his vampire and werewolf team of attorneys, a bartender possessed by a Hindu witch, and some good old-fashioned luck of the Irish—to kick some Celtic arse and deliver himself from evil.

Don’t miss any of Kevin Hearne’s phenomenal Iron Druid Chronicles novels:

Review
"Hearne, a self-professed comic-book nerd, has turned his love of awesome dudes whacking mightily at evil villains into a superb urban fantasy debut. Staying alive for 2,000 years takes a great deal of cunning, and sexy super-druid Atticus O'Sullivan, currently holed up in the Arizona desert, has vexed a few VIPs along the way. High up on that list is Aenghus Óg, the Celtic god of love. It's not just that Aenghus wants his sword back—though it is a very nice magical sword—but that Atticus didn't exactly ask permission to take it. Atticus and his trusty sidekick, Irish wolfhound Oberon, make an eminently readable daring duo as they dodge Aenghus's minions and thwart his schemes with plenty of quips and zap-pow-bang fighting." --Publisher's Weekly, starred review

“A page-turning and often laugh-out-loud funny caper through a mix of the modern and the mythic.”—Ari Marmell, author of The Warlord’s Legacy

“Celtic mythology and an ancient Druid with modern attitude mix it up in the Arizona desert in this witty new fantasy series.”—Kelly Meding, author of Three Days to Dead

“Kevin Hearne breathes new life into old myths, creating a world both eerily familiar and startlingly original.”—Nicole Peeler, author of Tempest Rising

If James Bond were a Druid
By New in VT
I read Book 1 of the Iron Druid Chronicles a few weeks ago and am struggling to recall enough details of the plot to write even a brief recap. And perhaps that is all the recap you really need.

Atticus is a super hot druid (see cover) which is impressive as he is actually thousands of years old. He lives in Arizona selling tea and tarrow cards to old people and college students (respectively) while romping about the desert with his talking dog/banter buddy Oberon. Ages ago he managed to get his hands on the legendary sword Fragarach and now Aenghus Og, the powerful Celtic God and original owner, has decided he wants it back.

Atticus is the James Bond of Druids. He's powerful, routinely underestimated, has lots of nifty cool gadgets, and women frequently drop their panties for him. Although Atticus doesn't have much time for lady-fun because has his hands full battling the minions of Aenghus Og. Luckily for Atticus he is near-immortal due to an arrangement he made long ago with Morrigan, Celtic Chooser of the Slain, who has agreed to not come for him. So that's handy.

Seems like a decent setup for a fun romp. But too many things bothered me about Hounded:

1. It reads like watching a video game. Atticus battles increasingly challenging minions until finally facing the big bad. Also, like video games, Atticus regenerates life points quickly by sleeping next to mother earth.
2. The ability to regenerate quickly and being near-immortal frankly removes a lot of the tension from the battle sequences.
3. There are never any consequences to things Atticus does. The most obvious example was when Atticus beheads a baddie in full view of a mortal neighbor who basically shrugs it off because Atticus is a good guy and wouldn't have done so without a good reason.
4. Atticus has no personal or emotional journey. In fact he doesn't really seem to want for anything beyond being left alone to play with his dog and hang out in his shop. He's simply reacting to the stream of baddies that show up on his front door.
5. Is there such a thing as too much action? There is so much action going on that I started skimming. It wasn't like I was worried about how it was going to turn out (see point #1 & #2).
6. I think the dog (Oberon) is supposed to be funnier than he is. Yeah Oberon is continually asking for a harem of french poodles to frolic with. Eh...OK.

This is a hugely popular series that gets rave reviews on Amazon. It is definitely better than your average Urban Fantasy, filled with lots of action, a large cast of immortal characters, and snappy banter. If you're looking for fun, light, accessible fantasy, this definitely fits the bill. But it's also sort of forgettable. I considered buying the second book in the series but I suspect it's probably a lot like the first (if I'm missing out on greatness, please let me know). I figure I could save $8 by just putting this on the shelf and re-reading it in a year or so.

Urban fantasy isn't my thing. I love the Kate Daniels/Magic Bites series. But generally most of what I've read (Patricia Briggs, Jeaniene FrostKaren, Marie Moning) has left me cold. So maybe this book is better than I think it is, and it's simply just not my thing.

Great start to introduce a new series.
By Marty T
The adventures of Atticus and his Irish Wolfhound, Oberon are entertaining and fast paced reading. This is a good start to a new series about Atticus a several thousand year old Druid, and how he stays looking like a 23 year old college student. To try to avoid some bad guy God's, Atticus lives in Arizona, but is found and used as a pawn by several gods that have him in mortal danger several times in this book to achieve their ultimate goals, not caring about the end results for Atticus. Atticus isn't thrilled to find out just about every one of his old acquaintances has used him some way or another, but he holds to his word, and we meet several characters that I hope to see in future stories, be they werewolves, vampires or old Irish widows. Enjoyable fast read, once it gets going hard to stop until the end.

When modern day meets Celtic past
By Linda Romer
I really enjoyed reading Hounded. It was unlike anything I have ever read. It's full of humor and exciting adventure. This story is about a Druid named Atticus O'Sullivan who has been trying to stay alive for about 21 Centuries. The book contained Celtic Mythology while Atticus himself is as modern as the day. Great characters, Witches, Werewolves, Vampires, Gods and Demons.
Atticus and his sidekick Irish Wolfhound Oberon will keep you entertained in this Mythical, Modern Fantasy. I'm looking forward to reading the rest of this series.

I give Hounded 4 stars for it's funny Fantasy read.
I would recommend this book to Fantasy Fans.

Watching the English: The Hidden Rules of English Behavior, by Kate Fox

Ten years later, they're still talking about the weather! Kate Fox, the social anthropologist who put the quirks and hidden conditions of the English under a microscope, is back with more biting insights about the nature of Englishness. This updated and revised edition of Watching the English--which over the last decade has become the unofficial guidebook to the English national character--features new and fresh insights on the unwritten rules and foibles of "squaddies," bikers, horse-riders, and more. Fox revisits a strange and fascinating culture, governed by complex sets of unspoken rules and bizarre codes of behavior. She demystifies the peculiar cultural rules that baffle us: the rules of weather-speak. The ironic-gnome rule. The reflex apology rule. The paranoid pantomime rule. Class anxiety tests. The roots of English self-mockery and many more. An international bestseller, Watching the English is a biting, affectionate, insightful and often hilarious look at the English and their society.

Many, Many Hours of Reading Enjoyment!
By Imperial Topaz
A book that is both extremely informative about every aspect of English culture, yet also highly entertaining to read. Written by an English sociologist who can look at her own culture through the eyes of an outsider. I'm giving this book my highest recommendation.

A thorough, but sometimes tedious analysis of the British character
By David Salahi
Interesting but tedious. It's a sociological study conducted by an actual anthropologist. I was frustrated by the first couple of chapters which give a detailed account of the methodology of the study. I was much more interested in actually learning about the habits of the English so, after a while, I skimmed ahead to get to that part. Once there, the book continues to be very detailed and exacting (though often humorous and interesting, as well). As a traveler going to the UK on vacation I was more interested in a general overview of the British character than the sort of detailed analysis found here. So, my main complaint is that the book was something different than what I was looking for. But if you want a thorough, detailed examination this book may satisfy. Still, I have to wonder just how valid and up to date all these details are. With such a well-qualified and diligent author it seems foolish to pose such a question. But from my limited experience it doesn't seem that the British are quite so constrained and uniform in behavior as described here.

English Humor vs American Humor: Worth the read to understand the difference.
By Judy Murphy
A word of caution: If you haven't been to or lived among the English for a specific period of time, these books may not appeal to you. But if you have, and found the change of atmosphere and humor and down to earth funniness, these books are a delight.

The best book I've found on this topic by far
By Patrick
I had a specific objective in mind when I bought this book. I'm in the process of writing a hobby level multi-user RPG for me and maybe up to a hundred or so other players (not many hundreds or thousands). I have a solid background in C++, less so in DirectX.

I've bought many books on game programing to help me with this process and to my surprise I've found this one simply amazing while most of the others I've found to be little more than expensive doorstops. :)

Like all the books of this nature, I read it in very much a "pick and choose" manner, focussing on chapters I liked and extracted code from the CD for places where it helped me. I found the material covered and, more importantly, the code representation of that material to be extremely helpful in my coding process.

I believe the tips and code the book provides (which all compile and provide very reasonable and practical applications for the ideas demonstrated) saved me (literally) hundreds of hours of research (not to mention trial and error) finding methods that work and work well and covered all of the core componenets I would want in a role-playing game. It covered multi-player over the internet, 2d and 3d rendering in directX, how to construct combat, spells, chat, and inventory systems and a variety of other items.

Naturally, I had to do a lot of customization to make the game do what I wanted it to do and I had to merge several of the ideas discussed into my own framework (for example the multi player network section is covered more or less stand alone where clearly other parts of the book need to be integrated with it to form a real game), but the result is I have a basic game up and running in a fraction of the time it would have otherwise taken, which no other book has ever really brought me.

Best I've read so far
By David G. Ashworth
The book delivers as promised. By the end of the book, you have a full working RPG mini-game that should help any developer get past the beginning stages. This book doesn't do everything for you. It puts you on the map. If a reader takes the time to understand the given code and READ the book, there will be gains to be had.
The author does go into some basic ideas at the front of the book, but I don't feel the technical material covered is enough to completely educate a pure novice and is too simple for an intermediate programmer. Although ineffective, I don't subtract from my review ratings for additional information.
I felt the author's technique was pretty well thought in this regard however. Someone reading the book finds the foothold where they first understand everything easily. This allows the author and reader to find the common stride needed for the reader to move forward.
There is some issues with the book code that had to be solved, but the author has a website with all the changes. The big problem is more Microsoft's fault rather than the author's. The book was released with DirectX 8.0 and the MS team decided to change a few things with DirectX 8.1. Not to worry, the author has updated his entire book code with an easily downloadable patch.
In Summary,
Best book I've read so far. From Graphics, Sound, Networking, Input and much more, this monster of a book will make you a better game programmer if the time is spent with it. (Beginner to Intermediate C++ knowledge required. A small trip through the DirectX SDK tutorials a plus.)

Good at explaining how to do things, but bad code examples
By Joe
I loved how the book explained everything. I have used DirectX books before and just done "what in the world..." because of how the information is organized. You have pieces of code and huge, long-winded explanations that complicate things. This book on the other hand explains everything well. Straight to the point and usually only gives you the history lesson when it's needed.

Problem is... the source code. I tried things as the book explained them into the compiler. Some of the functions do not even work. You get a lot of:

// g_pD3DDevice is a pre-initialized 3-D Device Object

which doesn't help much since it was explained only once.

I got lost quite a few times because the book hardly had any complete sets of code. In a lot of books, there'd be code sections with compilable example code (that works) that shows you an application of the code being explained. There isn't much of that in this book. There are code examples on the CD-Rom, but they don't seem to fit the material in the book. I had to supplement the examples from material from Microsoft's MSDN pages.

If you get this book, be prepared to use supplemental material (other book, online, etc). It explains how to do things well, but the source code inside wasn't very conducive to learning for me.
