This is the haggadah that has changed the American seder. First published in 1997, it's a full traditional seder, but with large amounts of art and commentaries, and discussion starters -- all in a user-friendly format that makes it easy to customize your seder. The Four Children section (with 20 representations going back to 1526) is already a classic. Easy-to-follow instructions make this book accessible to even a novice seder leader; and the many short commentaries will enrich anyone's Passover. Now in a new edition, with an added 32 pages of Passover stories.

Review
New Haggadah Earmarked for Families BY NOW THERE are who-knows-how-many different editions of the Haggadah. It is probably the most published book in all of Jewish life. There are haggadot for vegetarians, peaceniks, secularists, art lovers and almost every category you can think of. So what do we need another one for? That was my thought until I opened this one, and then I understood which niche this book fills. It is for those who may not know much, but who want to learn and who want a seder that is user-friendly and interactive and meaningful for both adults and children. That is a pretty big segment of the market, and so this is a book that deserves to be considered for possible use for at least one, if not both, of the nights of the seder. The people who put it together are not only good pedagogues, they are master designers. And so they have worked out a number of formats and prompters on each page that make it clear and easy to use For those who don t want to or are unable to stay up till midnight, there is a bare bones seder that consists of both text and ideas for discussion and projects for the kids and that can be completed in an hour. There are thought questions, such as Was it right for Abraham to break his father's idols? and Are we not all Jews by choice today? that are bound to raise debate at the seder. And there are quotations from a whole range of people such as Frances Bacon, William Shakespeare and Winston Churchill as well as Maimonides and Rav and Chassidic masters. Shakespeare s thoughts about whether revenge is good or bad are a lovely sendoff to the discussion of why we spill ten drops of wine for the ten plagues. The whole idea of the seder is that it should be an experiment in intergenerational communication. And so the editors do something very special with the section about the four children. They bring us 15 pages of different drawings, so that we can discuss together what constituted wiseness and what constituted badness, and what constituted simpleness and inability to ask in different periods and in the imagination of different artists. They show us a rendition from the Prague Haggadah (1526) and, next to it, one from Budapest (1924). And they suggest we might do some role playing or debate whether the wicked child may be an unfair description. They show us Abrabanel's opinion that the wise child may really be a smart ass, wise guy trying to show off his knowledge instead of the good guy that we have always thought him to be. There are renditions of the four children that show the wicked son smoking at the seder (1879) or as a prize fighter (1920). Tanya Zion adds two marvelous sets: one of the four versions of the ideal Jewish girl and one of the four children in contemporary Israel. See if you can figure out why the haredi child is the one who does not know how to ask. A set by Dick Codor uses the Marx brothers as models (quick do you remember which one never spoke?) I bet you can t get through this section of the seder without many laughs and a lively interchange on what constitutes goodness or wisdom or rebelliousness or apathy in our age. But try to save some time for the rest of the Haggadah, for there are a lot of innovations and surprises all through this book. By the way, one of its best suggestions is to expand the meaning of the karpas that we eat at the beginning of the seder to include dipping and tasting various fresh vegetables and other appetizers so that When do we eat already? does not become the kvetch of the evening. The seder is not supposed to be an endurance contest or a speed race or a rushed-through prelude to the meal. It is supposed to be a holy moment, when parents teach children who we are and what our story is and manufacture the memories that will nourish them for years to come. --Rabbi Jack Riemer, Jewish Journal South

Good to the Last Cup Did Maxwell House kill the American Passover Seder? It seems like a heavy charge to pin on a coffee company. But who knows how many Jewish children, numbly and obediently flipping through the pages of the blue and white Maxwell House came to regard the seder as a stultifying arcane ritual, a regimented recitation of thees and thous, an endurance test as lacking in levity as leaven? Is it only a coincidence that in the 70 years since Maxwell House began distributing tens of thousands of haggadot as promotional items, the intermarriage rate among Jews has soared? The rabbis never intended that the Exodus From Egypt be recited rote out of a paperback book. And Noam Zion and David Dishon don't intend that either. They have written a Passover haggadah for families eager to dispense with set questions and answers but intimidated by the prospect as well. Careful to retain the traditional core of the haggadah the 15 steps beginning with the first cup of wine and kiddush and concluding with the hallel, nirtza prayer and folk songs they weave around the text a tapestry of ancient midrash, contemporary commentary, provocative questions, and unexpected answers. They involve the children, with skits, games, and gentle horseplay. Some are silly like the Afghani Jewish custom of striking your neighbor with a stalk of green onion during the chanting of Dayenu. Others encourage introspection, like asking children to name the one object they would carry with them out of Egypt. At the same time, adults are urged to consider the mature themes of what Zion and Dishon call a leap of solidarity back into the founding event of Jewish nationhood. The heart of this effort is the section they call maggid or storytelling. The section takes the form of six suggested symposia on timeless themes: assimilation, anti-Semitism, ancient Egyptian oppression, resistance to tyranny, sexual oppression and the lessons of suffering. The sources brought to bear are as varied as Reb Nachman of Braslav, and Abraham Lincoln, Zora Neale Hurston and Victor Frankl. Because the authors are superb Jewish educators and scholars on the staff of Jerusalem's Shalom Hartman Institute (founded by Orthodox philosopher Rabbi David Hartman to create a common language among the most and least traditional Jews), their Haggadah avoids the easy relevance that has reduced recent haggadot to public service announcements on nuclear war or women s rights. When the authors urge a discussion, they offer appropriate texts on Jewish tradition, contradictory views, that invites the opinions of guests across the range of religious, ideological and generational perspectives. A few warnings for those who undertake to host a post-Maxwell House seder. As the authors point out, their haggadah contains enough material for a few years of seders and some preparation is advised to select themes, pull out readings, and assign roles. The other risk is that a long session of discussion and storytelling, however stimulating, can't compete with the smells emanating from the kitchen. Zion and Dishon suggest you revive the original rabbinic custom (forbidden by some, although not all, spoil sport halachic authorities): Along with the vegetable that is dipped into saltwater near the beginning of the seder, offer substantive appetizers with dips of their own. And if intelligent conversation, imaginative role-playing, and probing questions aren't enough to keep some guests awake? There's always coffee. --Andres Silow-Carroll, Moment Magazine

Way way WAY too much information.
By J. Shankman
Honestly...I just picked this up and was too overwhelmed to give it the attention it probably deserves. When I flipped through it, what I saw looked interesting...but the sheer volume of information just turned me off too much. I didn't feel intrigued or drawn in...I'd read a section or two and then feel like I had to turn more pages.

A Different Haggadah
By Jack Turner
It would be too easy to state what Noam Zion and David Dishon have done, or potentially done, the content and variety available for one Seder. This particular Haggadah is crammed with all sorts of information and stimulus. That is both a compliment and a criticism. Unfortunately, while it is jam-packed with lots of good things, the amount of information can be distracting or, worse, a turn off. Additionally, while everything is organized along the lines of the traditional Seder, it's not always easy to find some of the extraneous information. Additionally, the large number of inserts can frustrate or just plain annoy a reader. Nevertheless, there are many positive things to say about this Haggadah. First, the variety of information probably means you will never have to buy another Haggadah again, or at least not another leader's assistant. There are enough activities to be fresh every year. Second, the text and Hebrew transliterations are fluid and easy to read. The two authors have gone all out to produce this Haggadah, and it shows in the quality of the work and the price of the volume. That in mind, you may want to buy one copy to serve as an idea catalyst and a less expensive Haggadah for general use. It is well worth the price to buy one and those with larger budgets will benefit from additional copies.

Separating the Firmaments
By Marc Ruby™
When a new player first comes to the Go board what fascinates it the rich complexity of the tactical battles. Almost anything seems possible as players use tricks and carefully laid traps to resolve questions of life and death. Although Chess and Go will always be very different games, hand-to-hand fighting is where they are closest. For many players this will remain the arena they prefer to play in, and there is no question that a superb Go player must be a formidable tactician.
The beginnings of strategy in Go arise in the joseki; the opening pattern of play in the corners of the board where each player strives to get at least their fair share of the available territory and influence. I have seen an estimate somewhere that there are some 20,000 such patterns and the number continues to grow as players experiment. Practically speaking, a player who can play in a hundred or so would be well on the way to mastering the game.
Fuseki is about how the four corners (and the rest of the board as well) relate to each other. One can think of this as the first 5 to 10 moves. During this time the fuseki chosen will be the major determining factor in which joseki are played and how the other big points on the board are taken. Fuseki is how a player announces the overall approach he or she will take in the conflicts between territory and influence.
One learns Go in this same order, up the pyramid from tactics to the finer points of strategy. To a degree, this is the only way. Until you can keep a group alive or mount a successful attack, no amount of opening game savvy will make you a winner. Traditionally, students are discouraged from much study of joseki and fuseki until they are nearing the shodan rank. Personally, I think this is too late. Not understanding something of the elements of opening strategy severely limits what one can do in the game. So while deep study may not always be beneficial, a good basic grasp reaps many rewards.
This book, part of a series from the Nihon Ki-in (the Japanese Go Association) is one of the best books on fuseki and how strategy drives the overall game. Thirteen chapters organize the 29 most important opening patterns, spending a good amount of time showing how various joseki can be used to take best advantage of the positions. The language is simple and crystal clear, which is a great achievement in a subject area most players consider esoteric.
I'm not going to pretend that this material is exciting reading, but this presentation is quite painless, and well suited for occasional reading or research. As such it's value will survive long past the best puzzle book. The book is well organized for these purposes and includes a good glossary as well as subject, player and game indexes. All of this makes the book an excellent value.

The Mathematics of Games And Gambling: Second Edition. The Anneli Lax New Mathematical Library, by Edward Packel

The first edition of this book was reprinted eight times! This book introduces and develops some of the important and beautiful elementary mathematics needed for rational analysis of various gambling and game activities. Most of the standard casino games (roulette, , blackjack, keno), some social games (backgammon, poker, bridge) and various other activities (state lotteries, horse racing, etc.) are treated in ways that bring out their mathematical aspects. The mathematics developed ranges from the predictable concepts of probability, expectation, and binomial coefficients to some less well-known ideas of elementary game theory. The Second Edition includes new material on: sports betting and the mathematics behind it; Game theory applied to bluffing in poker and related to the “Texas Holdem phenomenon”: The Nash equilibrium concept and its emergence in the popular culture: Internet links to games and to Java applets for practice and classroom use. The only formal mathematics background the reader needs is some facility with high school algebra. Game-related exercises are included at the end of most chapters for readers interested in working with and expanding ideas treated in the text. Solutions to some of the exercises appear at the end of the book.

Review
Review of first edition: 'The whole book is written with great urbanity and clarity. It is hard to see how it could be done better or more readably. The main virtue lies in the close and clever interweaving of theory and example.' Mathematical Gazette

Review of first edition: This is an informal, well-written, and witty exposition of the usefulness of mathematics and its analytical processes. The book covers gambling and betting schemes in math in greater detail than do most textbooks on introductory probability. --The Mathematics Teacher

High school students will find this book a good preparion for doing an elementary statistics and probability course at university level. This book is also a good resource for first year university students, in particular in mathematics and statistics, to understand the theories behind the games. --Boris Choy, The Australian Math Teacher

Excellent, Well-Written Approach to Games and Gambling
By Amazon Customer
As a casual poker player and a sometimes visitor to casinos and race tracks, I wasn't sure what to expect when I picked up this book; however, I found it was just what I needed. Was it a how-to book for Texas Holdem or other specific gambling pursuits? Not at all. But did the book give me ideas on how to improve my poker playing, my understanding of odds and betting strategy in a wide variety of games? Definitely! There's a vast amount of information in a relatively compact book. True it takes a little bit of math background to work through some of the material, but there is enough basic material along with ample references to a relevant bibliography and appropriate web sites so that everyone could learn something from this book. The author is quick to point out his intention of not delving too deeply into some topics, but he does provide abundant resources for the reader who is interested in digging deeper.

The writing style is light and enjoyable. The author even touches on life's lessons and philosophies of life, but most importantly he provides insight into the thought process employed by consistent winners. Along with the number of charts and tables that layout odds, decision trees, and probabilities, there are exercises at the end of each chapter for the reader to increase his understanding of the material presented. It is a book that can be read through from beginning to end or read in sections. The book is certainly digestible for the casual, interested reader, but maybe not all in one meal. Digesting it section by section worked better for me. Again there is a wide range of information on gambling theory with broad application.

The book starts with a brief history of gambling, even referencing some literature in which gambling played a role. The book studies basic theory involved in probability and expectations, permutations, binomial distribution and game theory. There are sections dedicated to various games from dice to poker to backgammon along with applications to more serious topics such as prisoner interrogation, faith beliefs and even war.

In today's age in which people are trying to engage in activities that exercise their minds, this book with its material and exercises provides ideal mind stimulation. It is a broad, educational and entertaining math book.

For Gamblers Who Would Like to Understand Probability
By calc geek
This is not an academic treatment. There is no calculus; no measure theory foundation. Instead, this delightful read allows the average person with a little high school algebra to study for a few weeks, work the examples, and gain a solid foundation in the theory underlying games of chance. This is the reason for the book's popularity.

Modern college texts require a much higher level of preparation plus about four or five times the effort to assimilate. That's no fun, and truthfully of little value, to the average gambler who just wants to calculate the odds of throwing a 5 at craps. If you can't solve that problem and a hundred others after reading this book, you probably should stop trying.

There is fascinating historical and motivational material woven throughout dozens of examples taken from modern gambling scenarios. The essential combinatorics are developed and the normal distribution is described intuitively as a limit to the binomial. There's even a derivation of the famous gambler's ruin formula -- all without calculus.

A gambler will be more than just sharp after reading this book, he will become dangerous!

Beginners text
By Harmomelodic
I bought this hoping it would be a sophisticated discussion of probability and game theory as it applies to gambling. Unfortunately it turned out to be an introductory text on probability with some discussion of the history and context of the development of probability theory.

The book uses gambling as its entr to basic probability theory. Not a bad idea, but the title was clearly ambiguous.

If you are looking for an introductory text, it is probably a 4-4.5 star choice. For my purposes it gets a 2; the historical context was interesting and completely lacking in most texts (otherwise I would have gotten nothing out of it). The writing quality was also very good (easy to read and the explanations were straightforward and complete).

Recommended for beginners, NOT recommended for people looking for more advanced tools to solve more complicated gambling problems. Due to the titles ambiguity, I had to average my rating between the appropriate 'beginner's text' rating of 4-4.5, and the rating of 2 stars I give it for what I was looking for.

Introduction

“Down South I’ve been beaten three times since I joined SNCC. I’ve been thrown in jail for no good reason and beaten again once I was in there. The police and the Klan threatened to kill me and when they said that, I believed them.” This young Black man from the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), no older than eighteen or nineteen, is challenging his audience from the steps of Willard Straight Hall at Cornell University. It is 1963, and the long winter is giving way. Far above Cayuga Lake, the sun illuminates the bridges across the rocky gorges. The grass is already green. The young man is pointing to every one of us: “I’m tired of the way you think I’m exaggerating; I’m tired of how little you give of your life when you can give so much more. Unless there is a lot of support from the North, a lot of us are gonna get killed because we register voters and organize people for their civil rights. My question to you is this: Who among you will join the civil rights revolution?” I think for only a moment and understand I have come to a conclusion: “I will!”

It was an evangelical call. What a gift it was. In 1964, I graduated from Cornell and got a job as a field secretary for the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) in the North. I was put to work helping to organize a boycott of the Trailways Bus Company, fighting to integrate its segregated workforce, and, as I’ll tell you about more in the pages of this book, we won. Joining the civil rights revolution was my induction into transformative organizing, a tradition of building social movements to challenge the entire system that defines U.S. history and the present.

Transformative organizing recruits masses of people to fight militantly for immediate concrete demands that have to be won—integrating segregated facilities, getting jobs for Black people, shutting down military recruiting on a campus— but always as part of a larger strategy to change structural conditions in the world: To end post-slavery apartheid. To stop a war. To build a powerful, long-term movement. Transformative organizing works to transform the system, transform the consciousness of the people being organized, and, in the process, transform the consciousness of the organizer. It is the backbone and the model of what we are fighting for and how we can succeed in that battle.

For the two decades of the 1960s—from the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and the Bandung Conference of nonaligned nations to the final victory of the Vietnamese people in 1975—the practice of transformative organizing grew exponentially. It was a period of world uprising and revolution. In the United States, there was an explosion of selforganization as thousands of collectives, organizations, communes, and campaigns were built, involving millions of people who considered themselves part of “the Movement.” Black people expressed their rage against the system through rebellions in 458 cities between 1965 and 1967 alone.

Transformative organizing was essential to one of the signal achievements of this period. A full one hundred years after the legal abolition of slavery, the Black community, the Black Nation, led a united front with the New Left to fight against conditions of semi-slavery, enforced poverty, legal Jim Crow in the South, and de facto segregation in the North, all enforced by a police and Klan terror so inextricably linked that civil rights workers described it as “blue by day, white by night.” The Movement won the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, significant state restriction on Klan activity, and reduction of some of the worst police abuses. They won open housing and school integration programs, fair employment laws and affirmative action programs, and the right to vote protected by the federal government. The Movement won through sit-ins, marches, freedom rides, recruiting through hundreds of thousands of one-onone conversations, training organizers, and the support of a world Left that denounced U.S. racism in the midst of the Cold War. A militant and unified Black people, brought to the United States in chains, were able to lead a broad united front to finally overthrow three hundred years of formal racial segregation and apartheid in its most legalized and overt form. This required a literal revolution against the culture, institutions, and laws of U.S. society.

This connection between ideology on one hand and strategy and tactics on the other is one of the hallmarks of transformative organizing. Ideology is a worldview that gives the most essential direction to your life and leads organizations in their work to change conditions in the world.

Let me give an example. In April 1965, Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) called for a march against the war in Vietnam to be held on the big lawn in front of the Washington Monument. The United States already had 100,000 troops in Vietnam and was moving to escalate its presence to 184,000 troops. President Lyndon Baines Johnson had run as the peace candidate and had promised, in the election of 1964 versus the arch war-hawk Barry Goldwater, to de-escalate the war. In a classic betrayal, Johnson broke his electoral promise and initiated massive aerial bombing of north Vietnam in February 1965, killing hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese men, women, and children, almost all civilians, in a bloody effort to terrorize them to surrender. The war forced itself onto the consciousness of the Civil Rights Movement especially, and SNCC proposed that Black people should not fight in the war even when drafted using the slogan “Hell No, We Won’t Go.”

While the march organizers had hoped for five thousand attendees, for this was the early stages of the antiwar movement, and feared many fewer would show, on April 4, more than thirty thousand people attended, with bus loads from New York, Michigan, and the far West.

I attended the rally at a time when public oratory was one of the great educative tools. Four speakers created a talking book, with each one writing a chapter that was part of an integrated social theory. I. F. Stone, the iconoclastic journalist, warned us, “Do not trust the government’s lies about Vietnam. Develop your own research, your own magazines, your own newspapers, your own sources.” Staughton Lynd, a pacifist professor from Yale, challenged us to take courageous actions to stop an immoral war. Using the call from the Civil Rights Movement, he urged us to “put your bodies on the line.” Robert Moses from SNCC told us that the civil rights and antiwar struggles were two fronts in a wider war against racism and colonialism—“Make the connections between segregation in the South and defoliation in the Third World.”

Paul Potter, the twenty-five-year-old president of SDS, gave a stirring speech that shaped the consciousness of the attendees and lives in my mind to this day.

The incredible war in Vietnam has provided the razor, the terrifying, sharp, cutting edge that has finally severed the last vestige of illusion that morality and democracy are the guiding principles of American foreign policy. . . . That is a terrible and bitter insight for people who grew up as we did—and our revulsion at that insight, our refusal to accept it as inevitable or necessary, is one of the reasons that so many people have come here today. . . .

We must name that system. We must name it, describe it, analyze it, understand it, and change it. For it is only when that system is changed and brought under control that there can be any hope for stopping the forces that create a war in Vietnam today or a murder in the South tomorrow or all the incalculable, innumerable, more subtle atrocities that are worked on people all over, all the time.

Thousands of us were called to action in what amounted to a three-hour-long consciousness-raising-group meeting, supported by the musical interventions of Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Phil Ochs, and the SNCC Freedom Singers. After such a deep ideological transformation, the question was, “What should I do now?”

I decided to sign up for the civil disobedience that was rumored to be taking place after the march to the Capitol steps. With some organizing experience from my work with CORE, some good public-speaking tools, and a strong will to act, I was elected one of the lead organizers and spokespeople for our small band of fifty—the first sit-in in front of the White House against the war in Vietnam.

The words I spoke to my fellow protestors reflected the lessons I had just learned: “This is a personal witness and confrontation with the power structure. We understand the need for a broad-based demonstration, but in order to change a fundamentally rotten system you have to take fundamental action that directly confronts the source of the problem—the Johnson administration and the system itself.” We received extensive coverage from the Movement magazine, the Guardian. When we were finally removed from our vigil by D.C. police several days later, the Washington and New York papers ran pictures of us being arrested with locked arms as the police lifted us from our nonviolent human chain. The SDS March on Washington was a large-scale tactic in transformative organizing, changing the ideological consciousness of thirty thousand people who in turn went back to their communities to carry out the multiplier effect and organize a stronger antiwar movement. I went back to Newark, New Jersey, where I was an organizer with the Newark Community Union Project (NCUP, pronounced en-cup). Our demands of “No Rent for Rats,” “Let the People Decide,” and “No Police Brutality” expanded to “U.S. Out of Vietnam Now.”

Computer Orchestration:Tips and Tricks
By Mixed Up Title
I am writing a score and I have enough background but, it was hands on experience I lacked. I feel this book helps those with some music theory background. If you understand chord analysis, you can write a score. It is helpful to have a book like this to cut down on the number of hours necessary to complete a usable score with chord progressions that will cause a conductor to want to perform the work.I looked a long time for a book like this and although it is not the longest book on the subject, pages are not wasted on unnecessary topics.

Great little Book!
By Jim
This is a great little book! A wonderful opening act introducing the novice musician/orchestrator to the complexities and mystery of the world of midi. The author also acquaints us with the instruments of the orchestra and their individual range and sound characteristics. A very readable and understandable book that wet's your appetite for more. I might also suggest another book that takes the subject to the next level, "Acoustic and Midi Orchestration for the Contemporary Composer" by Andrea Pejrolo and Richard DeRosa, which I'm reading now and would also highly recommend.
