Flyboys: A True Story of Courage, by James Bradley

The classic New York Times bestselling story of heroism and sacrifice--by the author of Flags of Our Fathers, The Imperial Cruise, and The China Mirage.

This acclaimed bestseller brilliantly illuminates a hidden piece of World War II history as it tells the harrowing true story of nine American airmen shot down in the Pacific. One of them, George H. W. Bush, was miraculously rescued. What happened to the other eight remained a secret for almost 60 years.

After the war, the American and Japanese governments conspired to cover up the shocking truth, and not even the families of the airmen were informed of what happened to their sons. Their fate remained a mystery--until now.

FLYBOYS is a tale of courage and daring, of war and death, of men and hope. It will make you proud and it will break your heart.

From Publishers Weekly
The author of Flags of Our Fathers achieves considerable but not equal success in this new Pacific War-themed history. Again he approaches the conflict focused on a small group of men: nine American Navy and Marine aviators who were shot down off the Japanese-held island of Chichi Jima in February 1945. All of them were eventually executed by the Japanese; several of the guilty parties were tried and condemned as war criminals. When the book keeps its eye on the aviators-growing up under a variety of conditions before the war, entering service, serving as the U. S. Navy's spearhead aboard the fast carriers, or facing captivity and death-it is as compelling as its predecessor. However, a chapter on prewar aviation is an uncritical panegyric to WWI aerial bombing advocate Billy Mitchell, who was eventually court-martialed for criticizing armed forces brass. More problematic is that Bradley tries to encompass not only the whole history of the Pacific War, but the whole history of the cultures of the two opposing countries that led to the racial attitudes which both sides brought to the war. Those attitudes, Bradley argues, played a large role in the brutal training of the Japanese army, which led to atrocities that in turn sharpened already keen American hostility. Some readers' hackles will rise at the discussion of the guilt of both sides, but, despite some missteps, Bradley attempts to strike an informed balance with the perspective of more than half a century.

From Booklist
Bradley's phenomenal best-seller, Flags of Our Fathers (2000), was rejected by about 20 publishing houses before Bantam took a chance. His new publisher is not leaving the popularity of the encore to chance, launching it with an intense promotional campaign. Structured similarly to Flags, which concerned the flag-raisers of Iwo Jima, this work reconstructs the lives of several young men at war. Eight pilots and airmen were shot down by the Japanese military at Chichi Jima in 1944-45, George H. W. Bush among them. A well-known part of his political biography, Bush's story of escape is recounted somberly (Bush's crewmates died). The fates of the others shot down, who were captured, Bradley gathered in part from a source that was secret until a few years ago: records of a war-crimes trial of Japanese officers in command at Chichi Jima. Bradley sensitively builds the trial's unpleasant evidence (concealed, presumably, to spare pain to the airmen's relatives) into the narrative, which he frames with a portrayal of the Japanese military mind-set, which condoned the commission of atrocities. There are many brutally graphic passages about the torture and slaying of the American prisoners, which may prove too daunting for some readers, but Bradley succeeds in restoring dignity to the American airmen. Sure to command a large audience. Gilbert Taylor

"A triumph...James Bradley has once again given us the human face of a war we thought we knew, and, in doing so, has forced us not only to rethink our history, but far more importantly, to re-feel it."

A FEW FAULTS BUT A GREAT BOOK
By John E.
I have just purchased the book from Amazon so I can legititamly comment on it even though I read the hardcover addition some time ago from my local library. I haven’t read every comment but so far only have found 3 or 4 recognized as former Fly Boys. I am sure there are more. Please excuse me if this comment is so long but I want to correct some things in the book.

The authors brief description of “Glide Bombing” isn’t entirely accurate. He says you don’t dive but glide over the target and drop your ordnance. Actually you peal off into an almost vertical attitude from eight or ten thousand feet but prior to doing so you extend the landing gear and about half flap for dive brakes so you don’t exceed the maximum design speed of the aircraft. You also then open the bomb bay doors. The lift of the wings pulls you forward as you are in a near vertical attitude. Then there is another problem pulling out of the dive, excuse me, glide. The TBF/TBM was designed to basically drop torpedo’s so it was built to fly strait and level, drop their torpedo then take evasive action. The horizontal tail control surfaces were quite large and were raised and lowered when the pilot pulled or pushed on the control stick which was connected to the horizontal control surfaces with cables. The high speed dive or glide put so much pressure on the horizontal control surface that the pilot could not pull the stick back to pull out of the dive or glide. So, he would turn a wheel to the left of his seat that caused the horizontal trim tab on the elevator to go down which forced the horizontal elevator up, thus pulling out of the dive or glide. Most of the time you pulled out but not always. By rotating the wheel to activate the tab caused a hollow aluminum tube about the size of your middle finger that ran back to the trim tab to rotate to operate the tab. Sometime this tube sheared and when it failed you were SOL and went strait in at 300 knots.

As to the turret, the author mentions a stick to rotate the turret and a gun trigger to fire the gun. Actually in front of the gunner there was what appeared to be an automatic pistol with its muzzle stuck in a box. As you grabbed the pistol the back of the grip, in your palm, depressed and you put your trigger finger on the trigger and literally attempted to point the pistol in your hand at the target , the turret then rotated and elevated or depressed putting the gun on the target. You did not put the ring sight right on the target but you lagged, not lead as you might think, the enemy target on a line from him to your tail. You first lagged him several rings on your sight depending on your air speed and decreased the lag as he approached your tail. This because when your bullet left the muzzle of your gun it turned in the direction your plane was moving because of your plane’s forward speed. Oh yes, that back of the grip that depressed was the “Dead Man Switch”. You let go of the grip and the turret automatically stowed itself, rotating so the gun was pointing toward the tail and depressed so it was horizontal .

It was mentioned G H W Bush put the plane in a skid so the crew could more easily open the door from the bilge, i.e. the radio compartment, to bail out. You didn’t have to ”open” the door. There is a handle beside the door, you pull it and the door falls off. If it doesn’t go, you kick it and its gone.

How do I know all the above? I was a Fly Boy, more specifically a Combat Air Crewman in a Torpedo Bomber in a Night Torpedo Bombing Squadron. I sat in the bilge, that’s what we called the radio compartment, for over 300 hours in a TBF or later a TBM3E. The TBF was manufactured by Grumman Aircraft and the TBM by General Motors. I operated the radio, the radar, directed the pilot to the target by radar and told him when to drop or pickled the bomb away as it was night and dark outside. I also could operate either the turret with a 50 caliber machine gun or the 30 caliber stinger out of the back end of the bilge. I also had completed Navigation School and was the Navigator. When the war ended I was disappointed for a short time because I had not got into action in the war. I had just completed CAC training and had orders in hand to report to a VT(N), Night Torpedo Squadron, destined for action in the invasion of the main island of Japan scheduled for March of 1946. We did “invade” the island of Oahu in Hawaii and spent six months there at the Barbers Point Naval Air station. before going home for discharge.

I would like to comment on G H W Bush’s shoot down. He, of course bailed out but his two crew didn’t make it. Actually the two were not crew. The radioman was crew but the 3rd person was not the regular gunner. He was the squadron Ordinance Officer that asked to go on a mission to check out the weapons systems. I don’t recall we carried any weapons systems to check out. President Bush allowed him after getting an ok from the skipper of the squadron.. The pilot sits on his parachute and to bail out he disconnects his radio cords and seat belt and shoulder straps and goes out on the port side to avoid hitting the radioman and gunner going out the starboard side. The two crewmen do not wear parachutes. They wore a harness but the parachutes are stowed strapped to the port side of the radio position. The procedure is, the pilot calls the crew “BY NAME” to bail out. Not sure Bush did this according to another book, Flight Of The Avenger, that detailed the bail out. The radioman quickly stands up and retrieves his chute and attaches it on his chest to two snaps on his harness. He then, while the gunner is getting down out the turret, retrieves the gunners chute and presents it to the gunner who snaps it on his chest. The radioman then pulls the lever beside the door and the door falls off and he goes out headfirst and the gunner follows. The crews practice this periodically on the ground. The ordnance officer may have never done this even as the book just mentioned states he was indoctrinated in bail out procedure. Because this bailout probably took extra time perhaps because the officer had not practiced bail out, it may have caused the radioman and the officer to not make it. Beside his inexperience, he was six feet tall and would be curled up and cramped in the turret. Usually the gunner was shorter than that. You sit with your knees practically touching your shoulders. It was reported by the submarine that picked Bush up one chute was seen partly deployed. We, my pilot and I, never took anyone not qualified with us.

Many of the comments were about terminology in the book. For example the term “Fly Boys” was criticized. I heard that term during the period of WWII. Also Combat Air Crewmen were called “airdales” and “zoomies”. Some gunners were Aviation Ordnacemen and were called “BB Stackers”. As to the names of aircraft, the author called B 25’s”billys”, The Curtiss SB2C was called “SBDUECEEE” . The TBF/TBM was called a “Torpecker”.

I thought the book very informative in describing the actions of the Fly Boys even with the history lesson at the beginning. I salute those who did participate in combat especially those who’s ready room seats became empty. While we did not experience combat, we lost two planes and crews in our squadron in training flights and lost eleven planes, that’s 33 crewmen, in the 12 weeks of basic operational training. Even we piled up one night landing in fog but walked away without injury. Our reward for that was a medicinal shot of brandy at the dispensary. On our way out to the Pacific we spent time at Key West and participated in the search for the missing squadron that disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle. There is a final Navy Report that you can find on the internet.

I would recommend this book to those interested in the history and actions of WWII. I have just learned one of my friends who was a Fly Boy, now deceased, was awarded The Navy Cross.

I never like to write reviews talking about what is in a ...
By Danae Martin
READ! that's all I have to say. I never like to write reviews talking about what is in a book but I would recommend reading this one.

James Bradley, author of Flags of Our Fathers, which became an Oscar-nominated 2008 movie, wrote this book after researching the story of eight airmen shot down over the island of Chichi Jima in February, 1945. You might think that it's one of those "Greatest Generation" World War II histories, boasting of how American air power won the war and detailing the Japanese atrocities that were the reason we fought.

You'd only be half-right. In Flyboys, Bradley writes with genuine love and respect for his country and for the sacrifices U.S. servicemen made in World War II -- but before writing in gut-wrenching detail about the atrocities of Japanese imperialism, he spends some time talking about America's track record.

When Bradley then delves into what Japan did to the rest of Asia - and it was monstrous - it's a lot harder to be smug about what a noble country America was.

Childress county resident and sheriff
By Michael Pigg
I am a Childress county resident and the current sheriff. I knew Ralph Sides, who was the cousin of Warren Vaughn. I wish I had the opportunity to have been able to talk to him about his cousin and the war times. There are plans to dedicate a memorial in Vaughn's honor on the Childress courthouse square. It was very brave of Mr. Bradley to write a book that tells the story from both sides as well as some of the atrocities we Americans have committed over our history as a country. There are many historical facts that are in this book in which I as astute history buff had no idea had occurred. Well worth what I paid for this book

Amazon.com Review
Dead spirits in medium Rosemary Altea's cosmos live out happy and fulfilling lives--dead children grow up, lost pets scamper in eternal bliss, and deceased husbands guide and protect their grieving widows from their invisible dimension. A rosier spiritual view could not be imagined. Whether you heard about The Eagle and the Rose on Oprah or found it on The New York Times bestseller list, you may want to pick up this fascinating autobiography by an English-single-mum-barmaid-turned-medium. The Eagle and the Rose is a convincingly sincere account of Altea's dreary childhood in northern England, where as a young woman she realized her psychic powers were not the insanity she feared. Gripped in a struggle with insecurity and stage fright, you'll cheer as Altea develops into a successful medium who chats with the dead as easily as you chat with the person in front of you in the checkout line. Put your skepticism aside and she'll charm you with her simple character, candor, and steadfast belief in a loving god and life after death--or as she puts it, "life after life." --P. Randall Cohan

From Library Journal
Altea, an English clairvoyant and medium, has written a riveting autobiographical account of the discovery and development of her extraordinary psychic abilities. She describes with poignancy the trials of growing up in an abusive family in which her psychic talents were neither accepted nor recognized. It was not until she was 35 years of age that she met someone who was able to help her understand her psychic gifts. She then refined these gifts and began giving consultations to people seeking to contact deceased relatives and friends. As Altea presents case histories from her own work, she takes the reader on a fascinating excursion into the unseen world she perceives as well as providing compelling evidence for life after death. In many cases, her information is extremely accurate and difficult to dismiss. Altea's story is valuable for those seeking to contact deceased loved ones as well as for those who have grown up in dysfunctional families. This is likely to be popular in public libraries.

From Booklist
Rosemary Altea appears to be a mild-mannered, middle-aged British woman. But she sees things other people can't, including her spirit guide, Grey Eagle, an American Indian. Together, the Eagle and the Rose, do healings, rescue souls, and bring comforting messages from the other side. As a child, Altea thought the voices she heard and the visions she saw meant she was crazy like her grandmother, who had been carted off to a British version of the funny farm called the Towers. Only after she was divorced and the mother of a 10-year-old did Altea find herself befriended by two psychics who helped her develop her own spiritual gifts and pave the way for Grey Eagle to enter her life. The book goes on to chronicle various case histories including both spiritual and physical healings performed by Altea and Grey Eagle. One of the refreshing things about this otherworldly tale is its surprising down-to-earthiness. Altea recognizes that her story sounds ludicrous: a tweedy British lady visited by the spirit of a serene, all-wise Indian, who even helps her with the cooking (to say nothing of the dancing Scotsman who was Altea's first guide). Still, the author's no-nonsense manner convinces readers that at least Altea believes it's true, and certainly her anecdotal evidence will make readers pause to consider their own feelings. On the other hand, this account of this particular psychic isn't really all that much different from the many others that have appeared over the years, often from small presses. And yet, the book seems almost blessed. After all, Altea has managed to capture the attention of a first-rate agent (Joni Evans), a major publishing house, and Vanity Fair, which will soon be running a feature on her. Thank Grey Eagle? Food for thought.

Informative, intriguing. I intend to read it again, which is very unusual for me. Her conversation about the transition from the earth plane to life in the hereafter was interesting. I do not understand what she means about taking your problems with you ( I am not at all happy about that prospect.

needs another editor
By Karen Anderson
This is a heartfelt story with plenty of detail in all the right places. The author communicates with the dead, empowers the ill with healing energy, and travels thru time. That's a pretty full psychic plate, and we savor the samplings. Despite her extraordinary gifts (and I choose to believe in them), she manages humility throughout and even shares her many insecurities during the spiritual development. My one problem with the story was the voice she chose for the telling which, though sincere, keeps us at a distance. It's as if she channeled someone from a century earlier, someone in a drawing room with a very big skirt. She completely avoids contractions ("...his words do not absolve me from personal pain and anxiety, for I am human and am here on earth to learn"). The resulting tone of the book has a stilted seance quality to it, as if the King's English will make her case for psychic phenomenon more convincing. A good editor would have the author talking, not the author's dead grandmother. Instead of a book, maybe a series of interviews would have been the more relaxed "medium".

Interesting
By chellz0913
I enjoyed this book. Ms. Altea has a way of telling stories so well, you can literally picture it as if you were there. I love her viewpoints on this world and the "supernatural." One thing that intrigued me was her take on the concept of what is "real." Put into my own words Spirt it real; this Earth and human body are just vehicles to use while we are on our soul-experience journey. I did not ever doubt any of the stories she re-told. As crazy as some might seem, Ms. Altea made it believable with sincerity that you can sense through the pages. If you have ever dealt with the death of a loved one (and who hasn't?) I would definitely recommend this!

Perforated edges on the pages please!
By LibraryChick
My preschool daughter really enjoys the Kumon cutting books. They really help her in her scissor skills.

My one and only complaint is that the pages are extremely difficult to remove from the book. The pages instruct that an adult should cut along the edge of the page to separate the page from the book before giving it to the child. Unfortunately, the book only provides about a half an inch before the content of the page begins. It is impossible to cut the line down the page without cutting into the contents of the page. I had to tear up the entire book and separate all of the pages from the spine of the book just so I could remove the pages easily. It is a bit of a nuisance and unsightly and disorganized.

This problem could have been easily remedied if they'd just perforated the edges of the paper or left plenty of room before beginning the content of the page.

not as great as all the reviews say & here is why!!!
By S. D. Merrifield
When I purchase a good product for my kids, I rave about it. This was worth rating one star. The fact that the pages are not perforated makes me go from love it to hate it. If you buy the book and read the instructions, you will instantly agree with me. I can't even get the pages out properly for my daughter to use this workbook!! Maybe I got an extremely bad copy (I've sent a note to their customer service) but I can't believe the challenge they have made for parents before kids can even do the workbook. To explain further because you can't see the book, the instructions want you to cut along each page and remove with maybe 1 mm of space between cutting and binder. Not even enough space to get scissors between the line and the binder to cut. I tried tearing, but doesn't work so well in the middle of the page. I am going to take my copy to an office depot to see if they can cut the pages out with a cutting board, but what mom needs another errand to run? Really disappointed, but maybe my expectation were so high because of all the rave reviews, which is why I purchased in the first place. If it was perforated, it would be perfect. Because it isn't, it's one star! (will update my review if I hear back from their customer service.)

Update on 12/16: you have to disassemble the book and break the spine to use the book per customer service. Maybe if I had known that initially that you have to tear apart the book to use it, I would not have rated it so poorly, but it seems the company should fix that by adding perforated pages. My one star rating stands!

Fantastic Start to Using Scissors
By Katherine Chan
I really can't praise Kumon enough - the simple progression these workbooks go through really help child garner the skills they need while still making it fun. The first few projects were really simple - just cutting straight lines from the top of the page to the bottom. Zig Zag lines were introduced next, then simple shapes, then curved lines. The lines get thinner and thinner, although when looking at them, it didn't seem like they were at first. My son is halfway through the book and always looks forward to do his "cutting project" each day. There are 40 pages to cut in the book. I will definitely buy this for my daughter later - it's amazing to see how well my son can use scissors now...and how proud he is to finish each project! Highly recommended!!!

CHAPTER ONE

LORD SCOURGE RAISED the hood of his cloak as he stepped off the shuttle, a shield against the wind and pelting rain. Storms were common here on Dromund Kaas; dark clouds perpetually blocked out the sun, rendering terms like day and night meaningless. The only natural illumination came from the frequent bursts of lightning arcing across the sky, but the glow from the spaceport and nearby Kaas City provided more than enough light to see where he was going.

The powerful electrical storms were a physical manifestation of the dark side power that engulfed the entire planet--a power that had brought the Sith back here a millennium before, when their very survival had been in doubt.

After a crushing defeat in the Great Hyperspace War, the Emperor had risen up from the tattered ranks of the remaining Sith Lords to lead his followers on a desperate exodus to the farthest reaches of the galaxy. Fleeing the Republic armies and the relentless revenge of the Jedi, they eventually resettled far beyond the borders of Republic-charted space on their long-lost ancestral homeworld.

There, safely hidden from their enemies, the Sith began to rebuild their Empire. Under the guidance of the Emperor--the immortal and all-powerful savior who still reigned over them even after a thousand years--they abandoned the hedonistic lifestyles of their barbaric ancestors.

Instead they created a near-perfect society in which the Imperial military operated and controlled virtually every aspect of daily life. Farmers, mechanics, teachers, cooks, janitors--all were part of the great martial machine, each individual a cog trained to perform his or her duties with maximum discipline and efficiency. As a result, the Sith had been able to conquer and enslave world after world in the unexplored regions of the galaxy, until their power and influence rivaled those of their glorious past.

Another burst of lightning split the sky, momentarily illuminating the massive citadel that loomed over Kaas City. Built by slaves and devoted followers, the citadel served as both palace and fortress, an unassailable meeting place for the Emperor and the twelve handpicked Sith Lords who made up his Dark Council.

A decade earlier, when Scourge had first arrived on Dromund Kaas as a young apprentice, he had vowed to one day set foot inside the citadel's exclusive halls. Yet in all his years of training at the Sith Academy on Kaas City's borders, he had never been granted the privilege. He had been one of the top students, marked by his superiors for his strength in the Force and his fanatic devotion to the ways of the Sith. But acolytes were not permitted inside the citadel; its secrets were reserved for those in direct service to the Emperor and the Dark Council.

The dark side power emanating from within the building was undeniable; he had felt the raw, crackling energy every day during his years as an acolyte. He had drawn on it, focusing his mind and spirit to channel the power through his own body to sustain him during the brutal training sessions.

Now, after almost two years away, he was back on Dromund Kaas. Standing on the landing pad, he could once again feel the dark side deep inside his bones, the sizzling heat more than compensating for the minor discomfort of the wind and rain. But he was no longer a mere apprentice. Scourge had returned to the seat of Imperial power as a full-fledged Sith Lord.

He had known this day would come eventually. After graduating from the Sith Academy he had hoped for a posting on Dromund Kaas. Instead he had been sent to the fringes of the Empire to help quell a series of minor rebellions on recently conquered worlds. Scourge suspected the posting had been a punishment of some type. One of his instructors, jealous of the star pupil's potential, had probably recommended that he be stationed as far from the seat of Imperial power as possible to slow his ascent to the upper ranks of Sith society.

Unfortunately, Scourge had no proof to back his theory. Yet even exiled to the uncivilized sectors on the farthest borders of the Empire, he had still managed to forge his reputation. His martial skills and ruthless pursuit of the rebel leaders caught the notice of several prominent military leaders. Now, two years after leaving the Academy, he had returned to Dromund Kaas as a newly anointed Lord of the Sith. More important, he was here at the personal request of Darth Nyriss, one of the most senior members of the Emperor's Dark Council.

"Lord Scourge," a figure called out over the wind, running up to greet him. "I am Sechel. Welcome to Dromund Kaas."

"Welcome back," Scourge corrected as the man dropped to one knee and bowed his head in a gesture of respect. "This is not my first time on this world."

Sechel's hood was pulled up against the rain, covering his features, but during his approach Scourge had noticed the red skin and dangling cheek tendrils that marked him as a pureblood Sith, just like Lord Scourge himself. But while Scourge was an imposing figure, tall and broad-shouldered, this man was small and slight. Reaching out, Scourge sensed only the faintest hint of the Force in the other, and his features twisted into a sneer of revulsion.

Unlike the humans that made up the bulk of the Empire's population, the Sith species were all blessed with the power of the Force to varying degrees. It marked them as the elite; it elevated them above the lower ranks of Imperial society. And it was a legacy that was fervently protected.

A pureblood born without any connection to the Force was an abomination; by custom such a creature could not be suffered to live. During his time at the Academy, Lord Scourge had encountered a handful of Sith whose power in the Force was noticeably weak. Hampered by their failing, they relied on the influence of their high-ranking families to find them postings as low-level aids or administrative officials at the Academy, where their handicap would be least noticed. Spared from the lower castes only by their pureblood heritage, in Scourge's eyes they were barely better than slaves, though he did have to admit that the more competent ones could have their uses.

But never before had he encountered one of his own kind with as feeble an attunement to the Force as the man huddled at his feet. The fact that Darth Nyriss had sent someone so vile and unworthy to greet him was unsettling. He'd expected a more substantial and impressive welcome.

"Get up," he snarled, making no effort to conceal his disgust.

Sechel quickly scrambled to his feet. "Darth Nyriss sends her apologies for not coming to meet you personally," he said quickly. "There have been several attempts on her life recently, and she only leaves her palace under the rarest of circumstances."

"I'm well aware of her situation," Scourge replied.

"Y-yes, my lord," Sechel stammered. "Of course. That's why you're here. Excuse my stupidity."

A crash of thunder nearly drowned out Sechel's apology, heralding an increase in the storm's intensity. The driving rain started to come down in stinging sheets.

"Were your Master's instructions to leave me standing here in this downpour until I drowned?" Scourge demanded.

"F-forgive me, my lord. Please, follow me. We have a speeder waiting to take you to the domicile."

A short distance from the spaceport was a small landing pad. A constant stream of hovercabs was landing and taking off--the preferred way for those of the lower ranks who couldn't afford their own speeder to traverse the city. As was typical at a busy spaceport, a thick crowd surrounded the base of the landing pad. Those just arriving quickly fell into the queues waiting to hire a driver, moving with the disciplined precision that was the hallmark of Imperial society.

Of course, Lord Scourge had no need to step into the line. While some in the crowd cast sharp glances at Sechel as he tried to force a path through, the throng quickly parted upon catching sight of the towering figure behind him. Even with his hood drawn against the rain, Scourge's black cape, his spiked armor, his dark red complexion, and the lightsaber prominently displayed at his side clearly marked him as a Sith Lord.

The individuals in the crowd showed a wide variety of reactions to his presence. Many were slaves or indentured servants out running errands for their masters; they wisely kept their eyes fixed on the ground, careful not to make eye contact. The Enlisted--the ranks of ordinary individuals conscripted into mandatory military service--snapped smartly to attention, as if waiting for Scourge to inspect them as he passed by.

The Subjugates--the caste of offworld merchants, traders, dignitaries, and visitors from planets not yet granted full status in the Empire--stared with a mixture of wonder and fear as they stepped quickly aside. Many of them bowed as a sign of respect. On their homeworlds they might be rich and powerful, but here on Dromund Kaas they were well aware that they ranked only slightly above the servants and slaves.

The only exception to the rule was a pair of humans, one male, the other female. Scourge noticed them standing at the foot of the stairs leading up to the landing pad, stubbornly holding their ground.

They were wearing expensive clothes--matching red pants and tops trimmed with white--and both clearly wore light armor beneath their outfits. Dangling from the man's shoulder was a large assault rifle, and the woman had a blaster pistol strapped across each hip. However, the two humans were clearly not part of the military, as neither displayed the official Imperial insignia or any indication of rank on their garb.

It wasn't unusual for Subjugate mercenaries from other worlds to visit Dromund Kaas. Some came seeking profit, hiring their services out to the highest bidder; others came to prove their value to the Empire in the hope of one day being granted the rare privilege of full Imperial citizenship. But mercenaries typically reacted with deference and humility when co...

The Old Republic: Revan
By Skip Wiley
I had hoped that this book would be the entire story of Revan – before, during, and after the events of the Knights of the Old Republic video games. It was not but I still found it quite exciting. It had been a long time since I’d played the games and I wanted to see what had become of Revan. However, as I read this, I realized that I had forgotten way too much to be able to enjoy this book. I had to go back and read full wikis on BOTH of the KOTOR games before I could really grasp the timelines being discussed – who did what, when? The other problem is that the book only makes sense if you played the game to a certain conclusion. It was decided (by someone) that the canon ending to that story line (not that it’s canon any longer) was one of many possible outcomes. So not only did I have to review the game plots, but I had to review the specific path through the game that had been labeled as canon. Once I got through all of that, I was good. Things made sense again.
I was a bit disappointed in the total lack of closure here. It seems clear that Revan is intended to re-surface in other works so there’s no real ending of his story in this novel. The problem is, there’s no novel out there that tells the rest of that story and I’m not paying all the subscription fees to play Star Wars: The Old Republic. If we can have novelizations of the movies, why can’t we have a novelization of these games? They did it for The Force Unleashed. Having said all that, I still found this to be an entertaining read and a great look into Sith culture and power.

Great book, a must have for fans of Revan
By John Mejia
I'll admit my interest in this book was influenced by the KOTOR video game, which introduced me to Revan. Due to this my expectations for this novel were very specific, I was expecting an adventure that reunited the crew of the Ebon Hawk. Upon reading this novel I realized I was in for something entirely different, without too many spoilers this book divides itself into two separate plot lines that link up eventually. Karpyshyn does a really good job of making any reader even those who have never played KOTOR feel welcome while reading. Revan is a well fleshed out character and it was nice to get different facets of his personality, he does have a humorous side and a loving protective nature for those close to him. If I was to give any complaints it would have to be with the way it ended, I felt that the ending was rushed in a way that it felt that the novel was just a way to bring closure to the fans. Instead it made me wish that there will be another book to further end things. Overall Revan is a novel truly worthy of the Star Wars franchise, and is easily in the top 3 best old republic novels.

Good Read
By Brady Peka
Im a big Old Republic fan and despite all the negative reviews of this book it is a good read in itself. Now giving them that little bit of credit if you are a long time big hearted fan of the KOTOR games and you're looking for an epic closure for Revan then there is definitely going to be a big let down. Im not going into grave detail because plenty of reviewers have done far better than I could with that and I wholeheartedly agree with them because I was pulled hard into the games. They are by far my favorite games and I hope they will one day remake them for the newer consoles if they can do so without ruining the game. Now back on topic, this books closure of Revan and the Exile is indeed a grave let down im very disappointed. I'd rather go back to letting my mind wonder on what happened to revan than let this be the end of the story.

Brochure Book
By zoostra
I don't know what I was expecting but it is written more like product brochures than car reviews out of EVO.
In fact I don't know if much of what is written about was driven or experienced and there aren't interviews
with many people.
If you want a fact book you'll probably be happy. If you want a story I think you will be disappointed - despite
the title.

A very technical 911 book for the savvy Porschophile
By Blaine
This is a technical book that is not for the average auto enthusiast. This book details the year by year development of all the systems, from engine to suspension to body shell design. It's a must have for the hard core Porschophile.
